Why don't my symbolic links work when Telnetting to my Linux server? I know
this is probably something simple that I am overlooking!

Hello,

I'm having trouble using Network FileSystem on RedHat 6.0. I have it set up
as a NFS server, and when I try to mount the directory I want to use, I get
an error message saying permision denied. Please help.

Thanks

Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 10:45:42 -0400

Hello Folks:

I have a 486 100Mhz box... It's a bit old but it does what I need.
I run Linux and Windows.

I need to get a faster modem.. I dropped by the local Computer City and
all they have are Win Modems! Heck all I want is a Modem with jumpers
on it so that I can set the COMM port and IRQ to get it to work with
Linux.. like my 14.4 Boca.

Can you guys recommend me a relatively inexpensive 56K internal modem
which will work with Linux as well as with Windows. I'd really
appreciate it.

As I recall, Win98 and Win95 both install IPX and NetBEUI by default.
So unless they've changed the default config, Win98 *would* be using
IPX.

This site has a step by step howto for complete setup of samba. steps
for both linux and the win machine. (and they really work <G>)
http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/index.html
and this one as well
http://home.talkcity.com/MigrationPath/maguai/samba.html

These sites singly or in combination are nearly guaranteed to get you
networked.

If your TERM variable doesn't match the telnet client then it can appear
that lines cannot be deleted when in fact they are. This comes when the
excape sequence sent to the telnet client to delete a line on the screen
is not understood, and thus what is on the screnn doesn't change.

Hitting the ^L (that is control-L, aka FormFeed) would redraw the screen
image with the deleted line removed.

I assume that you have no problem deleting lines and character when you
are working on the local console. There is nothing in vi that you can
do locally that you can't do remotely. It doesn't depend on function
keys, arrow keys, or any other keys but the normal typewriter keys.

Most likely sendmail keeps the messages in its queue

Use mailq (or sendmail -bp) to see the reason why.

I am having problems reading email off my server using pop3. Everything
was working fine and it just stopped working. When I telnet to port 110,
the message I get is that the /usr/spool/mail file is already being read.
I deleted a pop.lock file that was in the /var/run directory and I still
get the error. Can anyone help.

I am having trouble setting up dhcp on my Linux box. I recently got a
cable modem and the ISP uses DHCP to setup its clients. Everything
works when I define everything statically (resolv.conf, etc.), but when
I set dhcpcd to execute during boot up it fails with the error:
DHCPNOOFFER. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes Mike

I upgraded the Kernel straight to 2.2.10 and `ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT) :
Operation not permitted' has gone now.

Subject: making routes to aliased interface persistant!!!
Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 14:35:49 GMT

ok here is the question

I have rh5.2 set up with ip aliased interface at say 10.0.0.1 with a
routable ip address as the primary both on the same nic.

i can
route add -net 10.0.0.0 eth0:0

but if i put this into linuxconf
it gets transulated into 10.0.0.1 thru eth0:0

i am doing ip masq thru my internet connection and need the internet
network to stick thru reboots..

please email any information on this topic..

thanks..
