I don't know what your scripts do but pppd cannot set a default route
when there is an existing default route, even with the defaultroute
option. You have two default routes showing up and only one of these
can be the active default route.
Since you can't get past the ISP machine on the other end of the wire the
eth0 default route must be the active one. In order for this to be so
it had to be created after the default route through ppp0 was created.
This very likely means that one of the scripts involved in bringing up
pppd and the ppp0 interface created it.
You need to find the command in the scripts where the default route
through eth0 is created and delete it. The network specific route
shown above is all you need for the LAN - but use addresses from
one of the reserved networks!

I'd guess that the ISP is the problem, e.g., sometimes you connect to
flaky hardware and sometimes not. You might be able to confirm or deny

you connect with the dropouts. I'd also believe it might have something

The link negotiation messages looked completely normal. There were no

Works fine. I can telnet in, FTP, access my web server, etc. Note that
remote access to my Linux box tends to be low volume.

I have just a few problems that I need help with.
1. When I start X, I get a "hostname: lookup failure" just before it loads.
2. I have to go into X to get my ppp connection activated. If I quit X, the
connection dumps as well. I have it set to activate at boot, but it doens't
actually stay connected unless X is running.
3. SMB starts; NMB doesn't, so Samba doesn't work right.

Edit /etc/HOSTNAME .
For your Win98-Internet connection, you'll ned to setup IP firewalling and
IP Masquerading on The Linux box. Your Winboxes don't have real IP addresses,
therfor the Linux box must be setup to "masquerade" all requests coming from
these boxes.

You might just want to look into using socks. www.socks.nec.com
It has a perl based report generator, that probably could be modified to
assign cost by volume or cost by time.
It also gives you a little more control than a simple NAT.

Here's what Works Fine For Me[tm] - from /etc/fstab:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/dos/c vfat defaults,user,gid=100,umask=002,quiet 0 2
Have a look at the "Mount options for FAT" chapter in 'man mount'

Slackware system, BTW).

But that only applies if you want to mount filesystem *from*

always build the kernel with it *off* (that's just the default

The LCP option 17h is for a Link Discriminator to use with Bandwidth
Allocation Control Protocol, BACP, described in RFC 2125. It is a two
octet integer used to define a unique link for a multilink bundle.
The Novell insists on it and pppd can't do it and so rejects it.
Neither side will or can budge and the negotiations fail.

There are two ways to do this. One is that you could install DAVE from
Thursby Systems (www.thursby.com) on the Mac. This allows the Mac to
act as a "Client for Microsoft Networks" and will see your samba
broadcasts, etc. DAVE, of course, is not free.
The other option would be to set up netatalk on your Linux machine,
which essentially lets it act like an AppleShare (both Appletalk and
IP) server. This works quite well and is free.

Has anyone a running configuration which allows the linux-box to
automatically dial the ISP if a PC in the network sends a request?
I tried to configure diald, but without success. If I start it, it just
makes nothing :-(
The IP-masquerading just works fine.
My favourite conf would be that diald uses wvdial (great tool!) to make the
connection to the ISP.
I have two PCs connected to my linux box. The ISP gives me a dynamic IP

Thanx for all your answers.

If you are wishing to share a PPP connection from Win98 to a linux box,
check out sygate. It is a proxylike program that will share your IP, the
difference between sygate and some of the others is that it is NAT based.
Therefore a proxy doesnt have to be configured on the remote machines.

The warning from fsck is for a good reason. You shouldn't fsck a mounted
file system, but for the root file system you can as a compromise leave
it read only, so you won't check a file system that is being modified
by using it at the same time.
The original question was as far as I understood: why you couldn't leave
the root file system in read only mode like you can (supposed to be able
to) with a separate /usr file system.

Then you might consider doing what I did. I have 2 Windows computers that I
use all the time for various tasks including email, web surfing, home office
(word/excel etc..) and online gaming. Upgrades to the second computer left
me with enough parts to build a Linux box. The hardware is a P5-200MMX
processor with 80M RAM, 1.6G non-UDMA hard drive, Matrox Millenium (original
version) w/4M WRAM, a 6X CD and 2 LinkSys 10/100 LAN cards.
I use the Linux box to connect to a DSL line (384K/384K). The 2 Windows PCs
are networked (via 10/100 hub) to the second LAN card in the Linux box and
are able to connect to the Internet through IP Masquerading. The Linux box
is more than capable of handling all the network traffic as well as
supporting applications like email, news, and Web browsing. This way the
Windows boxes can use all their power to run Windows applications and they
will need it!

webheadshots.com:mail
Which means that all mail sent over to webheadshots.com gets sent over
to system account "mail".
Now, is there a way to change it to make all the email to a SPECIFIC
USER gets routed to a specific user? Kinda like:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:mail [everything for [EMAIL PROTECTED] gets
sent to mail]
I can't use aliasing because aliasing can't distinguish between
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] since both domains use
the same MX record.
Any suggestions?

How about using a DOS version of tar. I would think you should be able to
mount the samba shares that you want to back up and then tar the stuff to
your NT tape drive just as you would on a unix box. Actually you shouldn't
even need to mount the shares.
