Hi!
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this.....
I have the requirement to build an IPX<>IP gateway. I want to put IPX in on
one card, and route IP out. Something of a bizzare idea but thinking about
it I can't think of any technical reason why not.
The reason being that we have a propriatory system than can only use IPX,
while the rest of the network is IP and we intend to purchase IP-based
terminals.
I thought that Linux would be the way (if any) to achieve this... but we're
open minded so anything would be much appreciated.

I've seen reference to this problem in this newsgroup, but at the time it
didn't apply to me. Why is it when I GET a 900KB file from the Linux server
it takes 321 seconds, but to PUT the same file back to the server takes 3
seconds?
The client is an old IBM Model 80 386 running DOS6.2 with MSClient and a
tcp/ip stack from what is now Netmanage, Inc.
I've been frustrated getting MSClient to work properly. It seems unable to
properly login to SAMBA. I believe it's getting hung up on the domain login.
What is the difference between workgroup and domain? In SAMBA, it seems as
if I can only set one of these two.
Thanks for your help.

Hello,
I was just wondering if there are any good texts or online
documentation on running proxy servers. I've visited some web sites, but
a lot of them are too convoluted to understand at times. Any help would
be most appreciated.

I've never heard of any machine rejecting mail for lack of ident,
(it's crap authentication) it's a deterrant to keep Joe Blow

What kind of configuration are you looking for? Completely
open? Password protected? Domain login?
A few more details would be useful in giving out some advice.

Check to make sure routed and gated aren't running. If you've got a
static routing table, you don't need either.
We had the same problem with a computer at work, and this was the
problem.

Bill Gates' company kicked in ass of the iso organisation. They changed
the CD Filesystem in their Windows environments.
I think you got a MS-Joilliet formated filesystem. Ouch. Some CD Writer
tools have the MS-Joliet as Standard CDFS.
The Solution is to use a 2.2.x kernel and enable the MS Joiliet extensions
for the iso9660 filesystem.

Subject: Ethernet hangs machine...
Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 20:08:36 GMT
I have two machines linked together via ethernet (Realtek 8139 PCI
cards). I've got them to play nicely with each other, I can telnet,
ftp, mount my NFS directories etc...
The problem seems to be this: If I pass a lot of data from my server
to the client machine in question, the client dies a death.
For instance if I do a flood ping of large packets from the client to
the server I can catch a kernel warning which is "kernel: eth0: Transmit
timeout, status -c 0005 media 80".
It doesn't seem to be an actual kernel panic as I can still use the
machine until I try and access a non-cached directory/file. I did once
see a message from the kernel saying "hda: lost interrupt" which made me
think it was an irq/dma conflict - but I can't see any problems in
/proc/interrupts or /proc/dma.
I've been messing around for two days now, unable to use the machines.
I've tried telnetting from the server to the client and running a
big-ish app (netscape) and in seconds the client is dead. Or, if I try
"tar -xvf file.tar" on a large archive, the machine will also freeze
after a while.
Anyone help?
Billy.

There is a commercial NDS Client included in the Caldera OpenLinux

If the Novell server has got a bindery emulation, you can mount a 3.xx

Setup the ipx stack before.

If the Server is setup for TCP/IP -- no problem use samba esp. smbmount.
Read in http://www.samba.org/
Samba is a Win3.x/Win9x/NTx Fileserver for linux too. Has more server stability

Yes, you can run Binaries of SCO, UnixWare and some other Intel based

More testing:
1)Using ppp to dial-out with "ifup ppp0"
pppd creates a lock file in var/lock lock...ttyS3
modem does not dial out
2) Dialling in from a remote site
mgetty works well, I can log on with no problems. So I looked in
var/lock directory
lock...ttyS3
so the lock files seem to be using the same tty references for mgetty
and pppd.
But I still can't dial out using pppd if I have mgetty enabled in the
inittab.
I'm getting nearer a solution...slowly.

Three of us have been wrestling with this for days. We have one server
that is unbelievably slow over the network. Please advise any
strategies if possible
Thanks!
1. There are 2 networks, 190 and 191. There are 3 machines and a switch:
new_switch (2 NICS one each on 190 and 191)
slow.190 (SCO Open Server 5)
fast.190 (SCO Open Server 5)
oldman.191 (SCO Open Server 5)
2. oldman.191 has 2 NICs on it, one of them on 190. He used to be the
gateway. fast.190 and slow.190 each had a route to '191.0' via
oldman.190 NIC
Then we got the switch and put him on both networks. We went into the
routing tables and changed the gateway to 191.0 to be new_switch
3. if from my machine sun.191 telnet to slow.190 the performance is
horrible; however if i telnet to fast.190 first and then telnet to
slow.190 the performance is
very good. likewise direct dialup to slow.190 is also good.
4. Some other facts:
The load average on slow.190 is very low, there are few
processes running;
The netstat -i output shows 0 errors
'traceroute' output from any host on the 191 segment shows
that hosts are reaching slow.190 through new_switch.191
we are not running routed so not picking up other routes
5. Some conclusions we have made about performance on slow.190 thus far:
a. the Network media (NIC, transceiver-hub, cable) is ok
because telnet from fast.190 has good performance
b. we do not believe hosts on the 191 segment are bypassing
new_switch to reach slow.190 because of traceroute output
If anyone can help us to think of some other areas to consider, please
do!
Thanks

Mark, Pick up the SSC book with a title something like "SAMBA uniting

The problem isnt to do with encrypted passwords. Even if it was, it shouldn't
bomb. It should deny me access. Actually it was a Word97 file. I was the
owner etc. Read my post again...I said I could drag it across the network to
the Win98 box then open it locally. If it was a Linux executable it wouldn't
open very well, would it? I am all set up for plain-text passwords. It just
doesn't like opening them across the network sometimes.

Subject: no route to host behind linux router.
Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 20:17:08 GMT
Hey.
This is from windows machines behind a linux router :
I'm trying to connect to ftp's with other ports than port 21, and when
it comes to list, it says : no route to host
I have a ftp site at port 25, one at port 32 and one at port 4500 that
I want to connect to...
How do I set these ports open ?
I get port 21 ftp, web, irc, ICQ, news, mail to work though...
thnx..

Subject: starting ppp from user accounts
Hello, I'm running a R.H 5.2 setup with a small network, 1 linux box
with ppp, ipmasq, samba and 3 win95 boxes. Linux runs the whole system
perfectly.
The only prob I'm having is starting ppp from a user's a/c. I've
created a ppp group, added all the users, setup the permissions
according to the PPP Howto, (pppd suid etc) but no go. There's no error
messages or any indication of what's wrong. The only way I can start ppp
is from root. Needless to say I have no desire to give the other users
root access to Linux.
Any suggestions would be most welcome. TIA.
Regards, Paul Roger.

Subject: Bridging with S.u.S.E 6.1

Hi,
i had configured a new linux-machine with the S.u.S.E. 6.1 distribution.
This machine should acts as a bridge with to seperate IP-adresses.
The former constallation with S.u.S.E 5.3 works fine and the bridging is
possible and active. Now i want to to the same on the new machine, but
it failed.
All in the Bridging-Howto given hints failed. The kernel is compiled
with the bridging options (Linux 2.2.4) and the network devices in
promise-mode. The output of the brcfg differs from the old one on the
old machine. (libc.5 is istalled to operate the brcfg).
Have someone an idea or solution for the problem? Did anyone know the
possible parameters for the brcfg tool (some are given, but i could not
find any further informations)? Is there a new version of the tool?
My system: P133, 32MB, 2xPCI Realtek (old machine: 3xISA SMC works
fine), Kernel 2.2.4
Thanks a lot!

Try searching for these programs on www.leo.org (or similar sites)

Try upgrading to 2.2.10 (as you should do otherwise also, because all
previous kernels have a vulnerability for the Denial-of-Service-Attack).
I remember something about networking errors in 2.2.5.
