Hey. I just learned about tcpdump. Check out the man page. It does
just what I think you are trying to do, although it doesn't have any
type of xwindows interface that I know of.

Subject: Problem with ADSL and dynamic IP address
Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 20:37:49 -0700

I hope someone can help me with this; it's driving me crazy.

Just got ADSL service installed. The provider only supports dynamic IP
addresses at this time. The problem that I'm having is that I seem to be
having problems getting that to work with my system (Red Hat 6.0). If I
hook the ADSL modem to my Windows 98 box, everything works fine. Ethernet
card is set for DHCP to get its IP address. Boot Windows 98 box, and during
the boot, I can see the DX/TX light on the ADSL modem flash. When Windows
finishes booting, winipcfg shows the IP address that has been assigned to
the net interface. Can browse web pages and all that. When I plug the ADSL
modem into the Linux box, however, it's a whole different story. I can run
netcfg and tell it that eth0 is to use DHCP to get its IP address, and when
I activate the interface, the ADSL modem flashes its TX/RX light again for a
bit, and then the shell window where I started netcfg from tells me that the
operation failed. Running ifconfig shows no eth0 interface at that point.

Does anyone know what I need to do to get Linux to use DHCP mode on its
ethernet card, so I can hook my ADSL modem up to it? *It* is the machine I
want hooked up to it, not the Win98 machine....

Thanks in advance for any help.

Subject: Cisco 675 question
Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 23:16:23 -0500

OK I admit it... I am lost.

I am trying to get Linux up and running as a Gateway server. It used to work
as a dialup !!!!

I just got DSL and have a Cisco 675 router and can not figure out how to
make it work. I have read and read, and still am lost :(

Eventually I want to get back to IP masquerading but I just want Linux to
connect to the itnernet via DSL first.

Here is what I have.

The linux box has two ethernet cards.

eth1
192.168.1.2 IP
255.255.255.128 subnet

eth2
192.168.1.1 IP
255.255.255.0 subnet

All other windows machines are on the 255.255.255.128 subnet.

The Cisco is set up as it was supposed to be for Win 98 as outlined by
USWest. I have a dynamic IP.

Do I need to reprogram the cisco and assign an IP address ?

Do I need to add information to the routing properties of netcfg ?

ANY help would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Rich

Hi all,

I am using a samba in a network. And there are 2 NT and 1 win98 in the
network . I can share my files to all the clients successfully, however
there are some problems in getting the share of the clients.

I can get the shares from the win 98 clients but i can't get the shares
from NT. When i run the command "smbclient -L [NT workstation name]",
it shows that there are no share offer. I have checked that the
permission is granted to everyone in the NT workstation.

Is it the problem of the setting of NT or that of samba?

Thx....

There are quite a lot of C++ projects on Linux. C projects (still)
outnumber them for several reasons.

1. C is an easier language to learn to use fully, so you may get
better participation on a C project because you're drawing on
   a larger population.

2. It takes substantial extra effort to code C++ libraries that are
binary-compatible from one release to the next, so library version
   problems are incrementally harder.

3. The C++ compiler has only recently got very good, and (much of)
the Standard C++ Library for it isn't ready yet.

None of these have proven prohibitive, but they are extra barriers.

Your nic should auto sense whether it's on a 10baseT or 100baseT network so you
don't have to worry about that.
Try pinging using the ip address, if that works, but using the name of the
other machines doesn't then make sure that your /etc/hosts file includes entries
for the other machines, if it does, and you still can ping with names rather
than numbers, (and pinging with numbers workds fine.) then make sure that
/etc/host.conf has the order set to host before bind. (otherwise, your system
will attempt a dns query, and you'll have to wait for the time out before it
checks the hosts file. Hope this helps.

Hello Linux people,

We have a Redhat 5.2 box that is running fine and quite stable. It is
on our network at work, does web services, has 3 modems in it and allows 3
PPP dial-ups, and never fails us *knock knock knock*. The machine also runs
the sendmail that came with it and we have no problems with it. It has its
own domain name and that works fine, too.

What I want to do is to allow access via POP mail. I know exactly
nothing on the subject, so I don't know if POP-mail comes with Redhat,
Sendmail, etc,. nor do I know how to activate it if it does exist already on
the box.

What do I need to do to get started on running POP mail? I don't need
anything fancy at all, so I don't want to install some 3rd party app that
does a bunch of things I don't need. We just want very basic POP mail
services.

Any help is, as usual, appreciated! Thanks,

I would recommend reading the fine man pages on tcpd(8), and
on hosts_access(5). These describe how to permit and deny
incoming access to a variety of Internet services, including telnet.

I assume that you'll be using a null modem.
Read the appropriate HOW TO's for details.
In your /etc/inittab file insert the following:

S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -r -i /etc/myissue -s 115200 ttyS0

(Replace the Sx instance of your own port choice.)

I'm using Mandrake 5.3 so take note of the mgetty on the line above.
Your's may vary. Also, you can create a customised message on the
myissue file. This is the message that will greet you before the log-in
prompt.
Once you've done that, issue the command on the Linux box:

# /sbin/init q

That will re-read your /etc/inittab file.
If your connections are working, then on the Windows side you can
use the hyperterminal app under accessories. Select the proper bit
rate that would match with your entry in the /etc/inittab file. Also, I
would assume that you will use the full harware handshake of your
null modem. Try to connect and you should see the greeting message
you created earlier (/etc/myissue) and the login prompt. You can also
try to transfer a file from your Win environment by simply sending
it ( it should be there on one of the menus) once you have a succesful
login.
I must warn you the security ramifications of these since anyone
with a notebook PC can stick in a null cable on the same port you are
using and play his luck when you're not around -so be careful.
Hope this helps.

Ferdinand

I have a similar problem. I have a ThinkPad 385XD running RED HAT 6.0 (had
the same problem with 5.2 also) and an INTEL EtherExpressPRO100 16 Bit
PCMCIA Card. I am also running GNOME and ENLIGHTMENT. LINUX detects the
card, I manually configure the card for my network. I can ping my laptop
but not any other computer on my network. When I type "ifconfig", LINUX
detects the "eth0" interface. The only unusual thing that I noticed about
"ifconfig" is under "TX" and "RX", they are both 0. Also, "TXQUEUELEN" is
100 or 100%. The output of "netstat -nr" looks fine.

Another strange thing I noticed is that KERNELCFG installs both the
"eepro100.o" and "xirc2ps_cs.o" Modules with "io=0x300" and "irq=3".
According to the PCMCIA HOWTO, this problem (i.e., not being able to ping
other computers on a network from a laptop) supposedly means some resource
conflict with PCMCIA and look at "/etc/pcmcia/config.opts". I did this and
tried changing some of the resources, adding and then excluding Memory
Addresses, excluding irq 3 as well as 4, etc. Nothing has helped.

I contacted RED HAT Technical Support about this problem. They suggested
looking at http:/www.deja.com, which I am continuing to do. However, I
have not found anything on point yet.

This question may be too dumb. In my home network configuration, I have
a DFE-530TX in a linux (RH6.0) box, a PCMCIA 10base-t card in a win98
laptop. Both of them are connected to a dual speed (Ethernet/Fast
Ethernet) hub. I assigned the linux box to 192.168.1.1 and win98 to
192.168.1.2. From the hub, I can see the 10mbps light is on of the port
connecting laptop's NIC and 100mbps light on of the port connecting the
linux. But when I ping from linux to the win98, it just does not have
any response. The same thing to the laptop. Simply, these two machines
don't know each other at all. Strangely, if I assign same IP address to
both machines, pinging from linux, a window popped in the win98 saying
"The system has detected a conflict for IP address 192.168.1.1 with the
system having hardware address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx". The address is my
linux NIC.

I must missed something basic in network wiring. Please someone tell me
what's wrong with the above configuration.

Thanks,

David

Here is the answer to my own question...
The IMAP RPM is not installed in the base install of Red Hat Linux... It has
to be installed. I realise that this is a newbie screw up, but thanks for
the help anyways. It is working now!

Thanks
David

ENsure your user's shell is included in /etc/shells.

Try contacting the North Pittsburgh Telephone Company. I think you will be
pleasantly suprised.

Subject: Remote console - Re: Remote fsck possible for Linux?
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 06:11:02 GMT

This question is nothing to do with fsck in particular - what you want
is a remote console server. There are three parts to this:

1. Connecting from your terminal to the console server

PCanywhere is a bodge - Unix (and Linux) have *proper* support for
remote access, with telnet and X11, so that's that part taken care of.

2. Connecting out from the console server on a serial port

To connect out from a serial port, you need to use something like "cu"
or "minicom" - the latter is better suited to a modem, so I guess "cu"
is your man.

3. Getting the big server to use a serial port as its console

You then configure your server to use the serial port as its console.
Headless (i.e. video-card-less Solaris machines do this automatically;
if you want to run an Intel x86 Linux server with a serial port as its
console (as opposed to the first VGA card) I think it requires a kernel
reconfig. Do a deja.com search for "headless Linux".

Alternative:

For something a bit more sophisticated, instead of using see if you can
get hold of NCSA's spp-console, as used by HP for their Convex V-Class
servers. This has nice features like allowing multiple telnet'ed in
users to view the same console, with only one having the "keyboard" at
any time (with a "keyboard steal" option) and so on. The V-Class ships
with an HP715 workstation instead of a dumb terminal for a console, so
you can telnet in and reboot the V-Class from the comfort of your own
Linux box ;-)
