You can use the software; point your browser at:

Login as 'test' with the password 'test' (no, that account
won't get you into anything else on the system ;)

Hello everyone. I am new to the Linux world and will need a lot of help in
the near future... if it wasn't for the course that I have taken last week,
I would still be blinded by Microsoft's crappy Windows OS. Let's put it
this way, since I learned what Linux can do, I am more that excited! If I
can successfully implement Linux at home, I will seriously consider trashing
Windows at home for good and will persuade others to join the Linux world.
Anyway, enough BS. My real question is that I have downloaded Linux
(Redhat) 6.0 from ftp.cdrom.com yesterday and would like to make a bootable
CD-ROM distribution of it. I used Windows NT workstation and Adaptec EZ CD
Creator to burn a CD. The result, failure! I think the files downloaded
were good but I was stupid enough to burn the CD using Juliet format instead
is ISO 9660. However, will ISO 9660 read / register the long filenames in
Linux? Is it wrong to use Windows NT and EZ CD Creator to burn the CD?
Any suggestion is welcome and thank you in advance.

If you mean "How do I list the machines mail1.shonne.org and
mail2.shonne.org as mailservers for the domain shonne.org?", then add
this to your DNS zone file for shonne.org:
MX 10 mail1.shonne.org.
MX 20 mail2.shonne.org.
The number is a priority, in this case, use mail1 as first choice

Subject: Re: How to setup a testing DNS

To do this "properly" you need to set up a "zone of authority" file for
the root domain "." and in it place a link record for the domain name
you will use. Your DNS server will then appear as a root nameserver.
For most applications, this is unnecessary - just set up forward and
reverse files and forget about the root domain. The only problem is that
your server will not issue denials for addresses you can't get to (like
"ftp.cdrom.com")
N.B. - ONLY do this if you are totally isolated from the Internet. If
you have a firewall or masqueraded connection, sort out DNS via the
firewall.
Check out the Linux DNS HowTO, and search "Ask Mr DNS" at www.acmebw.com
Here's an example root zone file - hope I haven't made a typo!
@ IN SOA . root.mydomain.com. (
1999010101
3600
7200
7200
86400 )
NS linuxbox.mydomain.com
mydomain.com NS 10.1.0.1
10.in-addr.arpa NS 10.1.0.1
linuxbox.mydomain.com A 10.1.0.1
# You can also do things like this, which will redirect "fresh" Netscape
# installs to your web server
home.netscape.com A 10.1.0.1
# end
Then set up a zone file and for mydomain.com and reverse file for
x.x.x.10 in the usual way.

I believe if you are using it "raw" (does ATZ ATDT... mean anything to
you?) then it will tell you as it connects. If you are using ppp, then
you need to get chat (if you are using it) to log this for you.

Tektronix WinDD-NIS integrates NT and Unix (NIS and NIS+) domain
account management. You can create NIS accounts on the Unix side, and
when a user logs into NT with the same passowrd and a special domain
name, the NT account is created automatically. Password sync is also
achieved.
They sell a worksation version, but I think it is best just to run it on
the PDC.
Another option is to use Samba's NT domain participation.

Depends on what kind of services you want to deny. First solution
would be to edit /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow. But that would
only turn off access to inetd services. You would have to edit
individual services conf files if those services does not use inetd.
second solution which would be much better is to set up
ipchains/ipfwadm to allow or disallow connection from certain ips to
certain ports (i.e., ftp, telnet, www, smtp, pop, imap, finger etc)
that's probably your best solution.
sample to disallow connection to port 80 (normal www port)
ipfwadm -I -a -S ip-of-machines-you-don't-want-to-use-www -D
ip-of-web-server 80
of course you would need all sorts of things like a new kernel with ip
firewall and ip forwarding support.
good luck.
dang.

Hi.
I've had lots of problems with burning cds under Windows for linux.
In your situation, I would try 3 things:
1) if you have access to a linux box (which might not be the case, then
go to 2)
try burning your CD from linux. Don't forget to set execute
permissions on all
the files (otherwise there is a risk for the install not to execute
properly)
2) try to get an iso image of the cd (I heard that there are some
somewhere on the
net instead of the files themselves which will probably have long
names problems,
or permission problems.
3) try to install linux directly from your hard drive (make the boot
disk, the supp.
disk and so on...). You'll then be able to burn your CD from linux!
BTW, I don't think the Joliet format is the problem because Linux can
deal with it.
Good luck!

Why exactly? My NT server provides a central location to store the policy
file. Can Samba not do this? If not, does Samba not provide a way to
distribute files - e.g. login scripts?

IIRC from my last RH 5.2 install, identd doesn't install by default. You
need to "Customise packages" and select it by hand. You should be able
to add the package to an existing system. Look for the rpm on a CD, or
an ftp site, look for pidentd-*.rpm.

Why don't you use bridging for the 675 it does it verry well.
We configure all cisco 675's with briding becouse then you also have a
fire wall and you won't have to use your Linuxbox as masq. machine?

Just configure it for routing and plug it in you NIC or hub. that will
do it.

I'm not extremely familiar with Red Hat, but the OpenLinux 2.2 that I use
is supposed to be based on it so here goes ...
There are 2 ways that I know of to set up the vid modes ... on is to re-run
the xf86config script which doesn't take very long but you have to know a
lot about your hardware (come to think of it, you have to know a lot about
the hardware regardless) and the other is to try the XF86Setup program from
the command line ... they both do the same job, but XF86setup is graphical
and will allow you to test your selected modes from within itself .. (bad
grammar I'm sure, but I hope you get it) either way, I managed to rig up
my Revolution IV card with XF86Setup and an updated I128 server so I hope
this helps you some.

I have been able to setup inbound access using ssh as a forwarding
tool.
i.e. 'ssh -L 10023:internalhost:23 firewall'
This sets up a local proxy. Now run:
'telnet localhost 10023'
You should see a login prompt from internalhost.
You also may want to look at the proxy tools such as Delegate,
(http://wall.etl.go.jp/delegate/). Of course, ssh is really secure,
which is a good thing if you are trying to create a safe hole
through your firewall.

this might be the main problem for C++ (libraries). different
compilers don't mix, and neither do different (minor) versions. so if
you develop with libstdc++ v2.8, and the user has 2.9, he'll have to
recompile.
the way C++ is this is going to stay. library version will get more
stable, so it will be less of a problem. but different compilers are
bound to be incompatible.
apart from that, C++ might not be a very elegant language, but it is
fast. at least compared to other OO languages. and still has about
every feature you can expect.

Subject: IP Masquerade questions
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 16:09:40 +0800
I setup my Linux box to run IP Masquerade on RH6 with two NICs (one for
internal, other for Internet). I have two questions to IP Masquerade.
1. Where can I collect data on how users access Internet (other web site,
mail server ...). I checked /proc/net/ip_masquerade which stored current
link information. Can anyone know how to trap the information in FDN format
and list out with time.
2. Can I set alias subnetwork to same interface e.g. eth1:0 -> 192.168.1.1
eth1:1 -> 192.168.2.1?

Blaim redhat for not including this very important package in a standard
server install. It has been mentioned often enough on the News group
to be a FAQ, but it shouldn't have been a problem in the first place.
just add the package to the comps file before mastering the next CD,
that is, if you are Redhat.

No, I don't think so. Bruce Eckel (www.eckelobjects.com), who is writing a
second edition to his _Thinking in C++_, seems to think highly of egcs, the
C++ compiler that comes with newer distributions.

True for a lot of stuff.

Up until recently g++ was not up to the standard, but it was probably
still adequate for a lot of stuff.

The C++ libraries should come with most distributions.
I think one of the main reasons is that more people feel comfortable with a
smaller language like C. It's easier to proceed when you feel you have a
grasp of most of a language.

I setup IP Masquerade on my Linux box using RH6 w/2 NICs and have following
questions:
1. How can I collect data on how user use Internet service (WWW, email
server). I check /proc/net/ip_masquerade has current info on established
connection. Can anyone know how to list it out in FDN with time.
2. Can I set IP alias on one of the NIC using different subnetwork IP:
eth1:0 -> 192.168.1.1, eth1:1 -> 192.168.2.1

This is a redhat system so you have to search for imap. Logic? not a bit.
And you have a choice between ipop3d from the pine people. There is no
other pos server in the distribution.

Any ISDN device connected through the serial ports can be treated as a
modem. Altough a troughput limit exists on the port of 112500 baud.
