Subject: Q: Why is "Text file busy"?!? Samba config?
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 10:10:24 +0100

My setup: Windows 98 workstation, running Netware clients, logged into a
couple of Netware 3.12 servers. RH 5.2 Linux server - running Samba.

I have drive U: on the Windows 98 workstation mapped to my home directory on
the Linux box - if I create a small script, called "test1" say, on the Linux
box using VI editor, it will execute happily. If, however, I use a text
editor on the Windows 98 workstation to create a script, called "test2" say,
it will not execute - the error "bash: ./test2: text file busy" appears.

I have changed the file permissions to 700 for both files, the owner and
group for the files are the same and "diff test1 test2" brings up no
differences.

The error message suggests to me that the file from the Windows text editor
is locked - this is not the case, since the file is not open in the editor.

Is this a Samba configuration problem?

Thanks for any help,

Dave.

TLI or XTI (almost the same) is what AT&T tried to make people use instead
of the socket interface from California. That wa the "future", and everyone
was expected to migrate their network programs to use TLI and/or XTI. That
was when AT&T brought out System V release 3 eons ago. That release lacked
the network transport, thoug, so no network worked.

Linux doesn't have it. Don't know if it ever will.

>Can someone explain me how exactly can TLI programming be done on Linux ?

You need to rewrite the communications part to use sockets instead.

Subject: bizarre networking problem.

This probably isn't something anyone can work out, since I don't know enough
about Linux (or indeed Windows) to be able to give out all of the relevant
information. It will hopefully be something that someone knows the answer to
on the spot from previous experience. If there is any extra info required,
please tell me and I'll try to get hold of it.

Firstly, my setup is a Linux box running SuSE 6.1 using IP masquerading to
act as a net gateway to my Windows 98 machine through ethernet. I don't
think there's any other relevant information here I can provide, it all
works fine.

-- Problem starts :) --

When I get disconnected from my ISP and reconnect straight away, I find that
I cannot connect to any game servers for about 5-10 minutes. I'm not exactly
sure how long it takes to get back on, it's hard to time it because I have
to re-attempt a connection every so often, and if it works I don't know when
it would have started to work. If I disconnect manually, this problem
doesn't happen.

I can ping the servers, I can use Gamespy to get updates from them, and I
can see all the people in the game, but for some reason when I try to join,
with, say, Half-Life or Quake 2 (the only two games I tried, they use
different ports so I don't think that's the problem), it simply tries and
fails to connect.

I have disconnected manually from here and reconnected, and the problem
stays (in fact I think the timer gets reset). Before you say it's anything
to do with the ISP, there's a few more things I should say. Firstly, it
never happened when I connected direct with the Windows box. Secondly, if I
reset the Linux box and then reconnect, it's instantly fine and working.
Thus, I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the Linux box (resetting the
windows box does nothing).

-- end problem --

I also have ICQ running with ICQ masq, and it is fine straight away (except
for the silly ICQ server problem when it sometimes stops you connecting), so
I have a feeling it's not to do with the protocol either since I think both
ICQ and the games use UDP?

Someone please help, I am really stumped.

Read the howto pages from Rodd Smith on

http://www.channel1.com/users/rodsmith/rhjol.html (Hope it is till valid)

and then go buy a CD.

Actualy making a bootable install CD is 10folds easier on a linux system
because of problems with symbolic links, RockRidge, and other things missing
a MSwin system.

Help,

I have recently setup Linux 5.2 on a machine. I want to use this machine as
an Internet connection. I have read some of the documentation on PPPD and
decided to use EZNET.

The problem is that when I run EZNET it connects ok to the ISP but It will
not setup route information. i.e. I can ping the DNS server but I can't
resolve any host names.

I have used Linux for a while but I haven't delt with any networking issues.
(I'm looking for solutions or pointers to information that may help)

Help would be gratefully received.

Hi!
Do you have network support included in your kernel?
It seems not (or not correctly at least).

Hi there ...

is there a possibility to use another ident method then /etc/passwd ?

I mean on a system with quite a few users (280'000) it's not quite a good
solution .. the /etc/passwd file would be huge and radom access on a text
file tja ... I'd prefer a db where the users are stored in ... is this
what NIS does? Are there any problems with it? are there any other
solutions?

can any of this other solutions be used with a pop server? I mean when
mail is sent over this server and the /et c/passwd has to be scanned
every time it would go on its knees .....

OK : log in as root, start X if you haven't it started yet
Run netcfg &

Verify you have a well configured loopback interface (I like to have a
hostname set) and possibly an eth0 interface.
(COntrol with ping localhost. Also try ipconfig)
Now add an interface : ppp0.
    Hardware : /dev/modem should by a link to /dev/tty0 (or /dev/cua0 ?)
    Communication :
        debug connection ok
        init script ATZ
        modem dial cmd ATDT
        phone number your ISP nb
add a few lines like this :
                  EXpect | Send
                   sername: | John
                    ssword: | junior
                                                       | ppp

                    TIMEOUT | 5
                   ~-- |
       Networking:
            Set default route

Now save all that. Activate this interface. Do a 'cat /var/log/messages' a few
times until you get something like that :

Of course the debug helps you testing your connection script.
Also remember you can have only one default route : if you are on a LAN and
have 2, delete the one to the LAN.

Good luck

Hi,

I have a similar problem trying to configure an onboard ethernet controller
in a Compaq deskpro 4000, the funny thing is that when a second card was
added to the system to test it, the on board started to work... very
strange.
The system needs to use dhcp, however it says the network is down (cable and
patch has been tested).

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Hmmm... don't know much about Slackware, but I doubt it's that
different from Debian. i.e., it doesn't matter which NIC the cable
modem is plugged into as long as the configs are right. I run eth0 as
my local LAN interface, and eth1 for my cable modem.

I checked the MainLog and when I log in from the remote machine it says
"found interface eth0 for proxy arp" which is normal because the IP of
the remote machine is declared as part of the ethernet.
I think the problem is that when I look at the routing table, the
gateway for the remote machine is 0.0.0.0 (identically with the gateway
of the main connection to the internet - ppp0).

xxx.my.real.ip 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 ppp0
0.0.0.0 xxx.my.real.ip 255.255.255.255 ppp0
192.168.1.X 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 ppp1
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.X 255.255.255.255 ppp1
192.168.1.0 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 eth0
etc.

I also tried to change the netmask for 192.168.1.X (the remote machine)
to 255.255.255.0 modifying the options.server file but it didn't work.
Actually after logging in as ppp1 the traffick to the internet is
blocked (I cannot ping any other machine from the internet).
If I log in directly (without ppp) everything works fast and ok.
I don't know how to solve this problem.
Any hint ?

Subject: Linux PPP & Leased Line problem
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 10:46:23 GMT

Hi all,

About 4 years ago I used Linux 1.0.x (0.99 ?) to
connect to a 28.8k voice-grade leased line without
any problem. But now I tried to use Red Hat
(2.2.5, PPPD 2.3.7) and PPPD to connect to the
same type leased line. I failed.

I have set up numerous PPP server/client with
Linux/FreeBSD, so I am defenitely not a newbie
on PPP. But now it's very very strange, the
PPP under RH6.0 is very very strange. As I run
the PPPD, PPPD gets stuck in the beginning LCP
negotiation. Looks like the local modem is
exchaning data with the remote modem, however,
they don't really send/receive anything. From the
remote Cisco 2500 router, I see the router isn't
receiving anything from the local machine.
But looks like the local machine is sending
data to the remote router. However, eventually
LCP connection time out and it drops the line.
The modems keep up and down.

I am going nuts. I have tried a lot of things.
Like change new cables, new modems even new
machines, connecting modems locally (without
through theleased line).

Does anybody have any clue or have the same
experience ? I am going nuts...and hope someone
could help me . Or I need to go back to NT,
which claims to work....
