I set up a batch file with the kill vnc command on an NT server, now I
can't get VNC to start as a service. I have tried to restart the service
& reinstall the service. Anyone else had this problem?
Thanks,

1. Stopping the resolver stuff (I'm not 100% sure if that works, but it should)
route -n etc.
2. ifconfig sets up route
This is a new feature in the 2.2 kernel series, allowing for automatic
setup of interfaces with just one instruction.

I agree, that doesn't make sense to me either. I don't think it should make
any difference whatsoever which NIC is used for the cable modem. It's just a
matter of configuring your routes correctly (it's not like eth0 has to be
the default route or anything -- my eth0 certainly isn't). IP forwarding
doesn't make any difference to this. It's perfectly possible to set it up to
forward (presumably with NAT [IP masquerading] in the case mentioned)
through the interface of your choice.

Wingate1.3 on a win98 machine supplies the network with access to a
dialup internet connection.
On the linux machine, the network card is set up ok etc.
Entering in the manual proxies settings into Netscape communicator for
linux as per a windows clent has allowed the linux machine to access
HTTP via wingate and to access the newsgroups (via port 119) using
wingate.
The interesting thing is that accessing an FTP site doesn't work in
netscape under linux (this is supplied by wingate using SOCKS on port
1080) and neither does email in netscape under linux.
Does anyone know why FTP and email in netscape won't work while HTTP and
newsgroups work ok in netscape under linux, and they all work using a
windows machine. The same settings are used in netscape in both
operating systems.
I know linux can do the job that wingate is doing.... at this stage the
linux machine is trying to fit into an existing network, not take it
over (yet)

I'm using a 3Com 3c509 card on a Red Hat 5.1 machine. The card is
recognized by Linux(I checked the boot messages - it's all there!), and
the 3c509.o modules is loaded, but i can't ping any of the other comps
on the network.
I don't know where to go from here or what other information will be
relevant...
Thanks.

I had the same error message with the same ethernet card but it happened
when there was a long time without network jobs to do.
Update your driver to v1.07 5/6/99 from:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.c
I can't assure you this will solve the problem because I just updated the
driver three days ago... but I hadn't the problem since then.
Good luck!

Are you saying that MS, with a practically unlimited budget, technical
expertise, access to resources that most of us mere mortals can only
dream about, took a year to achive a 99.8% uptime?
What does that tell you about the average joe out there? All he can
hope for is about 90% uptime.
I changed from NT server to Linux server 6 months ago. I achieved 99.8%
uptime in the last 6 months; the one time the system was unavailable
(for 3 hours - I was out of town) was due to the fact that I screwed up
the hosts file. This on a budget of $0 and a total time of maybe 40
hours.
The NT installation prior to that would crash regularly. I took to
rebooting it every weekend, and sometimes it would not come up. (I
blame most of this on R&RAS, which is the worst POS I've ever seen in a
production environment. I've seen alpha stuff that is more stable and
better documented.)
Even the non-techincal people have been remarking how reliable the
network is lately -
these are folks who don't even know what server I'm running.

Help!!!
can i use ip masquerade to make a 1:1 ip mapping between two networks? how?
What i want to do is to map some machines (like 194.24.1.0/24) to look like
they have a diferent ip on other network (like 192.168.13.0/24) but keeping
the initial ip on the netwok where they are connected.
1 2 3 4
+---------+---------X----------+
1 - my machine
2 - see 1 as having the ip 194.24.1.15
3 - Linux box?!
4 - see 1 as having the ip 192.168.13.3
Is this possible?!

OK : log in as root, start X if you haven't it started yet
Run netcfg &
Verify you have a well configured loopback interface (I like to have a
hostname set) and possibly an eth0 interface.
(COntrol with ping localhost. Also try ipconfig)
Now add an interface : ppp0.
Hardware : /dev/modem should by a link to /dev/tty0 (or /dev/cua0 ?)
Communication :
debug connection ok
init script ATZ
modem dial cmd ATDT
phone number your ISP nb
add a few lines like this :
EXpect | Send
sername: | John
ssword: | junior
|
ppp
TIMEOUT | 5
~-- |
Networking:
Set default route
Now save all that. Activate this interface. Do a 'cat /var/log/messages' a
few
times until you get something like that :

Of course the debug helps you testing your connection script.
Also remember you can have only one default route : if you are on a LAN and
have 2, delete the one to the LAN.
Good luck
