If you are running on a dual processor server, you might have the apic mode set
incorectly. On Compaq servers, you type <ctl>A during the start of the config
program for advanced mode and set the apic mode to full table mapped mode. I
believe this is the mode you need. You are probably set to full table mode.
That's the only way I know of to get the high IRQs.

I changed the modem initialisation struings in ifcfg-pp0 and chat-ppp0.
They were ATZ, but I changed them to a string I had seen suggested
somewhere.
ATZ meant that S0=2 and the modem was set to autoanswer after 2 rings. The
new string has S0=0 so autoanswer is turned off. That seems to be the main
change I can see.

So now I can dial-in *and* dial-out. Thanks to everyone for all their help
on this.

Only thing is I now have a new problem...Linux stops for about 1 minute on
boot up - after starting sendmail daemon and before starting the mouse
service (mouse is on a COM port).
Is this related?

Greetings,

I am running RH 5.2 with the included Netscape browser. I can browse the
internet just fine, but for the life of me I cannot remember how to get ftp
set up within Netscape. When I click on a link I do not get an option to
save the file to disk, as I do in IE4 on Win98. The file seems to transfer
but the results are displayed in the Netscape window. This is fine for text
files but doesn't work well for binary downloads :).

Can you please point me to a HOWTO or give me some ideas on what I need to
modify? Do I need to have an ftp daemon running on Linux or will Netscape
handle this?

Thanks

I would suggest that you are tying a login script rather than a direct
pap or chap connection. Many ISPs do not really support login and will
let it be flakey since that is not how you are supposed to log on.
Try following
axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
to log on with pap/chap immediately to see if that helps.

Hello,

I've just installed SuSE 6.1 which I'm trying to configure as a firewall
box. I did a minimal installation from CD. After I've compiled the
kernel including all the firewall and masquerading stuff, and made and
installed the modules I get the following errors when I run depmod -a...

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in

What's up? Does this mean I've not installed some libraries required by

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have to use two routers, unless you can come up with how to bridge
across your point-to-point link (is it T1?).... No, you have to use two
routers.

Do you have your masqueraded domain name in /etc/sendmail.cw?

This file tells sendmail what are the aliases that your system is known by.

In the first place, "oxygen.colossus.net" HAS propagated, at
least to this part of the net.

Secondly, you apparently do NOT have a webserver running
there. The machine is there; I can telnet to it, but you
either haven't configured an http server or you have it
running on some other port, etc.

BTW, since that's obviously a Linux box, why ask on a SCO
newsgroup?

Yup. 33x3, though in marketing-speak they were called DX4's. There were
even some 486 systems with a 40Mz bus, so you could have 80 and 120 Mz
486's.

In general avoid any PCI modem (though for you that may not be an
issue)... I know for a fact USR still makes hardware modems, and
other manufacturers should as well.

Just avoid anything that says "optimized for Windows", or "host
driven" or anything like that.

I have a number of aliases in /etc/aliases that all point to my main

I realize that this information can be gleaned from the appropriate

I'm running RedHat 5.2 and I have the procmail package installed, so I have
access to the formail utility. However, I'm hoping this can be done

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Living in North Carolina, I attended the Linux Expo in Raligh a few
weeks ago! I tried 5.0 several years ago, bought books, etc! But,
for the life of me was unable to set up my internet account! At the
Linux Expo all different kinds of promises came out of Red Hat that I
would find it "easy" to set-up my server! Well, three weeks, 2 hours
per day later I find I can't get it going! Where is the documentation
from Red Hat that they promised on this (ppp) in Linuxconf?

Very Frustrated and only asking for some help! I have printed out
more "How-To's than is legal! :) Right now I'm printing out Unruh's
How-To!

Frankly, I think folks like Red Hat and all the others are nothing but
a bunch of N.C. type politicians who make the promise and don't even
think about doing it!

Hi David,

THe problem is that although the hub is dual speed, 10/100, it can only
be in one mode at a time. So all hosts need to be either 10Mb, or all
100Mb not a combination of the both.

In order to have a combination of the both, you would need a switch. A
switch provides the circuitry to buffer traffic coming in on a 100Mb
port
before forwarding it to a 10Mb port. A hub does not provide this.

Cheers, Mark.

understanding that Linux normally only probes the first one.

If you haven't read about it in the ethernet mini howto.

Test it by using netcfg and disabling both eth devices. Reinable the one you
couldnt get to work and try it again.

I've gotten lots of collisions using the cheaper hubs available.
However, I don't notice a performance problem. Eg., If I ftp a large
file from one of my machines on my home network to another, the
collision light basically stays on ... but, I get a good 800KB/sec
transmission rate, so everything seems OK. Collisions are normal, but
on our ethernet at work I never see collisions ...

Hello.

I'm running a caching-only name server (in order to learn DNS) on my
sandbox (among other things) in order to

I'm having some issues with named completely filing my syslong with crap
that I really don't care about...such as:

(the names have been changed to protect the not-secure machine) :)

I read through the man pages for named, and I get this:

But its documentation says nothing about the configuration file's
''logging'' statement further than this.

So I dug through my bind documentation, and it was bad. I don't want to
recompile anything, I just want to change a config file somewhere easy
and have it dump this stuff into something like /var/log/named and leave
/var/log/mesasges alone...and if that's not possible, I don't even care
about these messages -- I can just send 'em to /dev/null...

Is there a quick and easy way to do this?

Thanks in advance
