That can't be it, because it's no harder to set up a 10.0.n/24 than it
is to set up a 192.168.n/24. There's definitely preferential treatment
given to the subnets of 192.168/16. It has to stem from *something*,
since random chance would favor 10/8 [since it's more useful].

Make sure the card is fully seated in the PCI slot--I had a similar problem
and the card was not properly installed. You may also find that you need an
'experimental' driver. If you use KDE, check SETTINGS > INFORMATION > PCI
and you should see your ethernet card there, complete with stats on which
chip it uses, etc.
Good luck.

At your work you probably use different way to connect to the Net then
ip_masq.
I'm using Linux based firewall at work (watchguard), the way they offer
authenticated Internet access is the following:
1) you need to have user database on firewall.
2) firewall runs small web server and Java applet to authenticate users.
3) when you first open browser you need to point it to the firewall:XX (were
XX is port number), then applet starts asking for user name and password.
4) user name and password get sent to firewall and when you authenticated,
you need to minimize applet and as long as it stays open, you can browse
Net.
I don't have any information on how to get this kind of application, but if
it's working on watchguard (Linux based), then something similar could be
used in your situation.
Good luck!

We have 15 - 20 workstations that have to access the server. It's a nusense to
change the hosts file every time we add a station. Besides this is a problem
new to RedHat 6. This wasn't an issue with 5.2. What changed?

Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 11:31:09 +0200
I have the following problem, on which I need a solution:
During boot, when the network scripts are executed, my screen is filled
with garbage,
and meaningless text strings.
I have traced the problem down to
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-routes
which contain this sequence:
if [ -x /bin/linuxconf ] ; then
linuxconf --hint routing "$1" | while read args; do
/sbin/route $args
done
else
The $1 variable contains lo in this case.
The kernel is just recompiled to include the firewall stuff.
My Linux is an RH5.2, with kernel upgraded to 2.2.9.
initscripts-3.78-2.4 is installed.
Any suggestions are welcome.

To use telnet and services other then browser you need to use transparent
proxy.
But if you just want to browse the net with Netscape, you can specify
manually proxy server's IP and port in preferences.
Good luck!

Erm, I'm using a text editor called Visual Slick Edit, which allows you to
save text files in either DOS/Windows format or in Unix format (end-of-line
differences).
Besides, the resulting files on the Linux system are identical - so my
question still stands.

Well if I distill 'better' from that, then (I have not tested Dylan, liked
some of Bops songs though), then it must be f*cking slow and bloated.
It is not true (to any extend) that C++ is much 'better' then C.
In fact any thing you can do in C++ can also be done in C.
Many times object oriented programming is not even needed, or even desirable.
And the use of classes is for sure just a programming decision, nothing
fundamental.
I speak both, C, and C++, and admit to mostly using C.
Because it is fast, small code size, portable.
Java is IMNSHO (In My Not So Humble Opinion) a PIG, maybe even an elephant.
Because it is so slow, did you try the java version of ICQ?
Compare it with micq, written in C.
That shows it all does it not?
Oh, the GUI? try xforms, it is written in C.
Not talking licenses here, just technical.
Of cause there is Qt, OK, it has it advantages too.
In fact every language has its advantages, but great is the programmer who
really masters the language (whatever language), he can write anything.

Hello.
Thanks to everybody replied me.
Abstract:
1) I have got a domain but after several days, it does not work yet.
2) Even my IP does not work: if I browse http://216.121.32.8
it is not seen
3) After many days and many e-mails, both my provider and
the NIC authority can't tolerate anymore my questions...
So I am looking for help
>you apparently do NOT have a webserver running
>there.
Do you mean that my IP does not work?
Actually I think it should work, regardless of the DNS,
provided that I browse directly http://216.121.32.8
So there is also a problem with my IP, not only with the DSN.
Right?
>In the first place, "oxygen.colossus.net" HAS propagated, at
>least to this part of the net
I really don't understand what you mean.
My domain is not "oxygen.colossus.net"
>BTW, since that's obviously a Linux box, why ask on a SCO
>newsgroup?
Because I saw on dejanews.com that keywords such as "DNS" and
"propagation" occur many times in this NG, and I need immediate
help (or consolation...)
>You can check your domain setting in Internic database, just
>go to http://www.networksolutions.com
My domain is not a com/net/org so it is not in the Internic database.
It is in an Asian database and it is registered correctly.
Also DNS are registered correctly
(they are the ones given to me by my web provider).
I have only a silly doubt: I typed nameservers as lower cases,
while I see that usually see that nameservers are upper cases.
May this be the reason of the problem?!
Are nameservers case sensitive?
However, DNS addresses (numbers) are right.
>As far as DNS, why don't you set your own dns server? You
>can setup primary on your Linux box and use ISP as a
>secondary (also you can use

I pay a webserver provider and he is supposed to have 2 running DNS.
So far I thought to be nosey, but now I understand that
I can begin to get angry with him.
>I've tried your IP address and it's not comming with anything
>in browser and in nslookup
Again , does this mean that my IP does not work?
Do you confirm that it should work even though DNS do not work?

I've used a proxy server in a Windows LAN, and I've recently installed a
Linux file server for this Windows LAN (about 15 nodes). I don't understand
the difference between a proxy server and IP masquerade. Are they the same
thing? I've set up and maintained WinProxy, which is a program that
provides Internet service to the LAN using a single IP address. Isn't this
the same concept as IP masquerade with only a different name?

If your rlogin works and does not ask you for a password, the rcp should
work too, unless you have permissions problem (make sure the user that you
use has write permissions in destination directory).
Good luck!

Subject: newbie question 3com

We've just installed a linuxsystem with SUSE 6.0.
We have a 3com Fast Etherlink XL PCI-NIC in our system. Linux seems to
identify the nic, but we can't reach our network. Local loopback and
local adress is "pingable", but no other adress in the network.
The networkport seems to be up, because we have traffic on the nic.
