Very easy,
Windows doesn't run a telnet server (althought, there are programs to run a
telnet server on a windows box).
Anyway, Linux DOES run a telnet server. So, It quite obvious that you can
telnet to the linux machine, and can't telnet to the windows machine.

I had the same problem and solved it by adding an obscure ppp option called:
novj
If you want all the gory details, try: man pppd
If you are using kppp, then you need to add this to the ppp arguments tab.
If you are not you may consider adding it to /etc/ppp/options
Hope this helps!

Actually, with the new install for Caldera, and KDE and GNOME evolving
in leaps and bound, Linux may be there sooner than you think.

Ping shouldn't be affected by samba. Assuming that you don't have a dns
(if you do it's not setup correctly) on linux you need entries in
/etc/hosts
like
zzz.yyy.xxx.www nameofntbox
on NT I'm not sure. Win9x it would be a file in c:\windows called hosts.
The format is the same as the linux - see hosts.sam for a sample Win9x
this is in c:\windows.
If you do have problems in samba there are similar files called lmhosts
that do much the same thing for netbios names.

i didn't write the above btw.
the front-ends are different (cc1 and cc1plus for C and C++
respectively). code which is in the intersection of C and C++ (valid
and meaning the same thing in both languages) could be compiled to the
same thing (modulo name manging and other trivialities) but then again
they might not.

and conversely, if you have C, you may as well use a C compiler on it.

Ok heres the deal. I want to connect all of my computers together with
networking. over the network i want to be able to go on the internet
from all of the comptuer using IP Masquerading, print from all the
computers, get access to files on every computer from every other
computer and chat from computer to computer. So i went out and bought
a 3com kit with a 4 port hub and 2 nic cards. i installed the card in
the machines that needed them and now i am lost. I have 3 computer that
need to be networked. 2 linux machines (named linux1 and linux2) and a
windows machine (windows1). I was just going to make the ips on the
computers 192.168.42.0, 192.168.42.1, and 192.168.42.1. So i did that
by running: # ifconfig eth0 192.168.42.0(1) and then ifconfig eth0 up.
I thought i would set up the linux machines before trying the windows.
But its not working!! i dont know why. what do i need to set for the
netmask and bradcast for the computers? what should i set the mtu to? do
i need to make a dns? if so how do i do that. i want to make linux1 my
server, and that has the modem in it at ppp0. another problem that i
was having was after i set up eth0 on linux1 all the info that was
supposed to goto ppp0 was going to eth0 how can i prevent internet stuff
from trying to go over the network eth0 and going to ppp0 but still have
network access. please i really, really need help.

I am having difficulty setting up a Pentium 133 box with TCP/IP
networking. I've tried installing Slackware 4.0, and Slackware 3.6,
both with the same results. The current installation is 3.6.
I have successfully recompiled and installed the kernel with the
drivers I need (3C905TX card), and when I boot the kernel finds the
card with no errors.
When I log on, I can ping myself at both the address I assigned and
through loopback, but cannot ping anything else, either on the same
network or through a router.
I know the cable is good, because I've tried another PC on the same
cable. I've swapped the 3C905TX with another one, still no change. My
routing table looks good, as are the obvious TCP/IP settings (IP
address, netmask, gateway, DNS server). I've checked the BIOS settings
on the PC and that looks fine, too.
The PC is based on an Asus motherboard (P/I-P55TVP4), with 32MB RAM,
and a 2GB hard drive. This PC ran NT Workstation with this NIC and
worked just fine.
I have set up Linux before on a number of machines (all Slackware 3.6)
and the network pieces ran just fine.
Ideas, anyone?

On the advice of a friend, I downloaded the 2.2.10 kernel and tried all of
this again - same results. Compiling the 3c509 driver into the kernel
itself issues the same response as well.

Hi all,
I'm a total newbie to Linux and I've got a question about LPR.
I installed a TCP/IP connected Printer (via YaST (SuSE 6.0)).
It's a non-postscript compatible InkJet Printer.
If I click to Print from my Browser Window, I get a postscript file to
my printer. Well, a printer driver is in the package and I can choose the
driver when I configure a locally connected printer, but I can't choose such
a driver when I install my printer. How can I install the printer driver?? I
heard something about APMFILTER. I think I have to configure which printer
driver I have to use with APMFILTER. But how???
And BTW: I want to print normal textfiles too. Is there a command like Print
or sth???
Thanks in advance,
Freddy

T/TCP does not appear to be supported by Linux 2.0.36
Is it supported under 2.2.x?
Or is T/TCP a dead issue? There seemed to be some talk about it about
1.5-2 years ago, but not much lately.

Gene Heskett sends Greetings to Frederik Meerwaldt;
First off, I *think* you are referring to 'apsfilter'. If thats the
case, the configuration screen was quite confusing to me until I got a
snotty reply from the author, telling me all this stuff was in the
option 8, 'other' path thru the options. I never considered the
possibility that my Epson Stylus might be an 'Other' printer :-(
My printer was in there, as were dozens of others even newer.
Once setup, it absolutely kicks what this amiga can do to a sheet of
paper (except with GS5.10) clear into the trash can. I think you'll be
pleasantly surprised too.
BTW, you will need to upgrade the ghostscript install to 5.50 before
quite a bit of apsfilters options work, even 5.10 doesn't contain the
huge majority of the .upp and .upd files. It was sorta a beta release
for that stuff.
FM> Hi all,
FM> I'm a total newbie to Linux and I've got a question about LPR.

Humm, IIRC that the printer needs to be *on* the users machine for
apsfilter, not on a shared basis someplace on the net. I could be full
of it too, so get it and rtm. :-\

For that, once you have apsfilter properly setup, you use the syntax:
lpr -Praw /path/to/file

I own very same Ethernet card and had very same problem under RH 5.x
If this card is connected to hub I guess it blinks for a while and stop and
blinks again.
Here is what I did.
Download tulip driver from linksys. The file is called tulip.c
Place this file into /usr/src/linux-xxxxx/drivers/net/ directory. (where
xxxxx are your kernel version)
Recompile kernel. Make sure you add tulip driver in network setting.
Reboot RH.
That's it. Your card should work. =)
Good luck

Normally, you would assume that the clip is facing down.
The standard wiring method is..
OOGBBGBrBr
S S S S
1. Orange-striped
2. Orange-solid
3. Green-striped
4. Blue-solid
5. Blue-striped
6. Green-solid
7. Brown-striped
8. Brown-solid
The clips should look like...
If you held both ends together (bent the cable) with the clips down, it should
look like..

The wires that actually used (only two pairs are used) are 1,2,3,6.

>From either machine I can successfully ping it's own configured IP of
the NIC (192.168.0.1 for linux, and *.2 for windows, with a
255.255.255.0 subnet mask). However, the machines don't talk to each
other (ping by IP) in either case. /etc/ppp/options contains
"noipdefault" and /etc/sysconfig/network has `FORWARD_IPV4="yes"`.
While pinging the windows IP, tcpdump shows:
# tcpdump
tcpdump: listening on eth0

21:07:20.257414 arp who-has 192.168.0.2 tell 192.168.0.1
But no response...

/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
ipchains -M -S 7200 10 60
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQ
Any obvious problems with the above?
Thanks,
Pat

Subject: running "off-line" cgi ?

I would like to create an offline database and a search engine on Linux,
with output in HTML interpreted by Netscape.
Is it possible to run CGI scripts on a non-connected machine ?
Do I need to configure HTTPD ? Modify usr/bin/perl, if I use Perl
scripts ?
Is there on-line documentation about that ?
Thanks,
David

Not sure without seeing more specifics, but it sounds as if you've got a different
user name at your POP server than on your linux box. If
that's the case Fetchmail needs to be told about it, with a line like
poll pop.netway.at protocol pop3:
user remoteusername there is localusername here
password ushouldnotknow;
Otherwise your mail won't necessarily reach the correct mail folder.

Is that a Linux thing or is it Netscape? Netscape for Windoze doesn't
care if you're connected or not.
