I just finished setting up a 2 machine network in my house. Everything
seems to be working fine, except for file locks over NFS mounted
directories (such as /var/spool/mail). I can read, write, delete,
and execute files from remote directories, but not lock files. This
is especially troublesome when trying to read mail and 'elm' fails since
it can't generate a lock.

I used the debug facilities in the kernel (echo 1 > /proc/sys/rpcinfo/*)
and observed the 'dmesg' output (client side):

rpciod_tcp_dispatcher: Queue Running
rpciod_tcp_dispatcher: Queue Running
rpciod_tcp_dispatcher: Queue Running
rpciod_tcp_dispatcher: Queue Running
nsm_mon_unmon: rpc failed, status=-13
lockd: failed to monitor 192.168.1.1

If I'm reading this correctly, the status is the same as EACCES. But even
as root these locks can't be generated.

The two machines are both running Linux 2.2.9. The server is not using
the kernel NFS server.

I had a similar network setup prior to this one using the same server
(Linux 2.2.9), but the client was FreeBSD 3.2, and there were no problems
when it came to file locks.

Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this? I checked all the HOWTO's
that I thought may have a clue, but nothing. Dejanews (or deja.com) had
nothing on the subject.

I would say yes, especially if you are tired of typing IP addresses. I
have a DNS server running on WinNT (it was harder to configure than any
Linux daemon I have ever setup), and it has been great. If you DHCP you
can link it to your DNS server, reserve IPs for certain computers w/ DHCP,
and have them assigned a host name automatically.

Read the documentation. Carefully. My hunch is (since you didn't
mention doing it) that you've got to change the permissions on some of
your files. This is all described in the X-ISP documentation. You can
also (as root) do a "cat /var/log/messages" to check the PPP connection
messages (both normal activity and errors get reported here).

Last time I checked, samba or X aren't supported, with these exceptions.

You can get a program called VNC (Virutal Computer Networking) that will
allow you to setup a server on the Linux end and put the client on the
other end (client is small, can easily fit on floppy or FTP site), and
you can access X server(s) via TCP/IP (using IP addresses or
hostnames). I'm not sure about Samba, but last I heard, it wasn't PPP
compatible.

I have installed the xisp 2.5 for my redhat 5.2, but it won't make a
connection. I've installed it in the /opt/xisp*** partition. First it
dials up then connects and then after a while it hangs up. What did I
not do yet? I've checked the options file and only lock is there. And
for pap-secrets, linuxconf added the userid and password automatically,
but there is no auth command. How do I set everything up? or is there a

In C you still dont know that x will be unaffected.

Consider this:

#define inc(x) (++(x))
  ...
  int x = 1;
  ...
  inc(x);

In this case, x is being modified and you cannot tell from the context. It
may be bad form to write a macro with lower case letters, but it can also
be argued that it is bad form to use non-const references in C++.

Subject: RH6 routing enable
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 01:47:56 GMT

I am trying ot get Linux to route with RH6.0

My netowrks are 192.168.10.0 and 192.168.11.0

Eth0 is 192.168.10.90
Eth1 is 192.168.11.1
My local router is at 192.168.10.1 another is available at 10.99

I can ping both routers from the linux box

When I connect another box to the 11.0 subnet with address 192.168.11.11
I can ping both interfaces on the Linux box but cannot ping the local
gateway

I have enable routing in Linuxconf and have compiled routing into the
kernel

In every way I can check routing appears to be enabled....

What are the things that one MUST do to have routing work?

Which kernel options apply to basic routing?

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Does the RH6 kernel come with routing enabled?
How can I be certain?

75 MHz is fast enough for a firewall up to about T1 speeds.
If you're going to be sharing home directories on one machine, it's
going to be busy.
The machine closest to the users' keyboard should be the fastest. In
this case, that would be the file server.

But heck, try it both ways, and see what works.

Subject: Multiple Remote Networks present IP conflict
Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 22:43:27 -0400

My linux boxes at home are all on one network which works fine.

There are several remote private networks that I connect to through dialups
or tunneling through ssh. These also work fine.

My problem is that I have hit a conflict between two of the private
networks. Both Network A and B happen to have machines that I need to access
(preferably simultaneously) with the same IP addresses (192.168.0.8).

Currently in order to get files from a the target machine on Network A
to the Target machine on Network B I have to connect to the remote machine
copy the files to the local machine, then change the route for the IP
Network from ppp0 to ppp1 and then connect and copy to the machine on
Network B. Anyone have any good ideas/solutions?

I dont know if you need to do so. But if.

http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/diag/index.html for a start. Maybee.

If not:

A bootable dos-floppy with whatever it take to do the job. Will make

So if you know what you need. A image (dd) of something dos-bootable.
written to a floppy. Then mount it.

And dosemu for packing out the files. (if .exe) then put them on the
floppy. reboot.

Maybee dosemu will allow you to fiddle with the nic.

If you have pci network card you can find its information like this:
login as root then -- cat /proc/pci

then you'll see something like this:

Bus 0, device 15, function 0:
Ethernet controller: Realtek 8029 (rev 0).
Medium devsel. IRQ 10.
I/O at 0x6c00 [0x6c01]. Write this down please.

now do this : modprobe -l |more
you should see: some or all your modules
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/ne.o
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/ne2k-pci.o
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/shaper.o

/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/slhc.o
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/ppp.o

now type this "linuxconf" at the prompt
if you have a only one card that is a [eth0]
you module is [ne.o] or you can use [ne2k-pci.o]
remember don't type .o there only [ne]
put your TCP/IP INFOMATION
REBOOT !

now type at to root's prompt "lsmod" you'll see

Subject: I can ping localhost, gateway, and through to the WAN but....
Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 23:36:28 -0500

When I try to do anything (i.e. telnet, ftp, http) I get network is
unreachable error.
I can use nslookup on DNS servers that are beyond my gateway, but I cant
even
traceroute to them. All attempts at traceroute point to the same server,
but dns resolves
the correct ip addresses for hosts across the network. Any thoughts
would be
appreciated. I have read the Linux Documentation Projects how-tos but
haven't
figured this out.

This Message spacially for windows user and of course Linux
===========================================================.

Since I got the Cable Modem, many of my friends asked me, to Set up
FTP server and put REDHAT linux on it. So I did it,
because most of the Redhat mirrors are very slow, why so many users,
I like that, why ? everybody going Linux. not Windows NT

if you guys have faster connection you can install RedHat via my Ftp server
if you are using modem, then the best bet is download it.

here is the address:
        ftp://upnet.dyndns.com
        All the RPM's
        ftp://upnet.dyndns.com/pub/linux/redhat/redhat-6.0/i386/RedHat/RPMS

If you want to create boot disk
        ftp://upnet.dyndns.com/pub/linux/redhat/redhat-6.0/i386/images

Right now I am writing good Linux help web pages about:

INSTALLING, NETWORK (TCP/IP, MASQ), PPP(client & Server), DNS, SAMBA,
FIREWALL, (not yet)

and Howto setup Secure Web server, if you want check mine:
