Maybe you could find out which cheap NE2000-compatible card(s) your local
dealer is offering and then have a look at http://cdb.suse.de/cdb/E/ wether
it is supported.
IIRC there also is a note in the Ethernet Howto on supported Cards.

(fewer newsgroups would have done also :-)

I Have just one computer conected to my ISP via modem - PPP , no
firewall
and nothing like that compiled into the kernel, just the basic
networking options,
ppp, unix domain sockets, tcp/ip, no extra stuff.
IP-forwarding is disabled at bootup.
By the way, are the host files only meant to regulate hosts on a LOCAL
network ?

IPX packets will not care about any IPCHAINS filter rules. So you can
use IPX forwarding as normal. But bridging might cause troubles because
IP packets might be bridged too.

If I interpret the source correctly one can not disable IPX routing
currently. But aslong as ipxd does not run next to nobody will use the
Linux machine as router. Setting up a static route through the machine
on another Linux box (1) will cause the machine to do the routing.

(1) Do other systems permit setting static IPX routes?

I've noticed that in the sendmail.cf file the serviceswitch options is
ignored on my linux system (kernel 2.2 Suse 6.1 ). whatever values i
put in the defined fiel (/etc/service.switch), sendmail keeps doing
DNS-lookups at moments i really don't won't him to do. I've solved the
problem by changing my /etc/nsswitch.conf file ("hosts files" where it
was " host files, dns". Now sendamil doe not do any DNS lookup, but
(of course) Squid doesn't either. Is there a way to say that only
sendmail can't do dns-lookup, but other processes can (like squid)?

The cu command is supposed to be suid uucp as does also uucico. This is
so these command can get permission to use the ttyS? device wiht owner uucp.
The linux version of uugetty doesn't quite understand this, so it might set
the owner back to root:root. This is not realy a problem if you call out
using the /dev/cuax device, but this is not the recommended way these days.

FUD, again. C++ templates are not weak. They allow construction of
libraries that cannot be constructed in any other language.

If you must disparage something, complain about baroque syntax.
Future languages that manage to address the same problems will
probably use a more tractable syntax, but it would be easy to
fail to match the fundamental power of C++ templates.

I've the following Problem:

We have a internet connection via LAN; It works with DHCP and there is
only one card (hw-adress) allowed.
But we have more PCs connected via ethernet and TCP with 10. IPs.
Now there is a second card in the linux-PC. One gets over DHCP the
connection to the internet and the other works with ip 10.10.10.20
intern.

Does somebody know how to set the routing, so that we can reach the
internet from the other PCs an use the linux for routing???

thanks

Hi,

I am trying to run a Linux machine as a server for Windows.

It is running a 2.0.36 kernel. I edited the /etc/smb.conf file so it shares
/tmp as a temp dir, just for testing.

The linux machine appears in the network neighbourhood on the Windows
machine, but when I try to open it, I have to supply a password for the
\\linux\IPC$ share.

I read about this in the Samba documentation, but it only says I need to
have 'the' guest account enabled.

Any1 have an idea??

Edit the 'hosts' file of the Windows machine. For Win9x it should be in the
Windows dir. For WinNT in Winnt\system32\drivers\etc (on my machine it
is...)

Success,

Subject: ndc/named over TCP/IP heterogenous network using samba
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 11:14:02 +0100

Hi

I have a couple of problems - I don't THINK they are ALL related, but, well,
I guess I'll find out.

Problem 1
ndc seems to be flooding the network. When named is loaded, the hub is
showing my computer sending/receiving about every 5 or less seconds. It
didn't do this previously - I'd put money on it being a config problem, but
I don't know what settings might affect this. There is no response from any
other machine on the network: see next...

Problem 2
The network (particularly Samba shares) is not visible to Win95 - it shows
nothing in the Network Neighbourhood window except 'Entire Network', and
errors with 'Network is busy' when Entire Network is selected. I suspect
that this is due to ndc flooding the network. However, if I stop ndc
services, the Samba are visible but inaccessible ('\\Moksy is not
accessible - The specified computer did not receive your request').

FYI: I can telnet in from the Win95 with ndc STOPPED directly to the IP
addy. I can telnet in from the Win95 with ndc STOPPED using the hostname
(moksy) - presumably because it is propagated over NetBIOS. I cannot telnet
in at all with ndc STARTED.

Problem 3 This is separate to 1 & 2 (I think). When I could see Samba
services (not that long ago either!), although it would allow users to pull
files from the linux machine, it would not allow writing. The error message
is in the vain of: "PAM_pwdb[nnnn]: 1 authentication failure for david". I
am reasonably certain that the passwords are correct, and I have set Win95
to use cleartext passwords. Any ideas? (Not that they'll be testable until
I get dns working proerly :o(( )

I would appreciate any feedback - thanks...

Moksy

Looks like a job for port forwarding. Depending from your kernel version,
this is a separate option in the "make config" stade. The kernel docs
should give you some hints on how to do that.

What you need are two things. For the proxy you take "SQUID". If you running
squid you have - if you want - your own DNS-Server. SQUID needs at boottime
the contact to a DNS-Server. So if you have not your own DNS Squid will
start a connect to the DNS at the internet. An easy administration tool is

I'd just like to add that I had a lot of trouble setting up Samba with an NT
machine (NT machine refused to see the Samba machine completely) until I
gave the Samba machine a *real* IP. You mentioned that you're just going to
use the 10.*.*.* addresses and that might give you some problems (or it
might have been some quirk in my system). Still, if it gives you a problem
and nothing else seems to work, you might want to try giving the Samba
(Linux) machine a real IP.

Good luck,

Rick.

Hard luck, buddy. WinModems don't work under Linux. The reason is
probably that these beasts are not *real* modems - they require using
the processor, or something... so they're like pseudo-devices.

Do yourself a favor: buy yourself an inexpensive *real* modem.
You can then continue to use your WinModem under Windows and
the real modem under linux.

Try to telnet to the printer and disable the banner from there.
I don't think that is linux to print the banner but the printer itself,
NT drivers probably disable automatically the banner.
My HP 8000 TN do the same :)
