Yes. mgetty needs a modem. It initializes it and then waits for an
ATA.
It doesn't mind if you turn of the modem in between (but if you do
this keep in mind that mgetty expects the modem to be initialized
to a certain state).

Sounds like the reason it does not work is not that you can't send out on
5012, but requests can't make it in to the win98 box. Same problem here with
InetCAM. Haven't really researched it yet, but it may be a good thing to
read stuff from the "linux router project"...

So does it behave the same way if someone telnets/ftps in ??

My LinuxBox is strapped for space, so I setup personal folders on the
Winbox and then created a samba share for them to access it, but with
permissions so they couldn't get into each others.

Will automount do this ?

Re-building our company's WAN and allowing internet access from one point to
all. I have a 4 pc network and @home network here which uses Linux and
ipfwadm to protect the pc's at the house, and it works fine.I want to use
the same for my business. I have about 500 users total scattered around. Use
is not heavy except e-mail, and about 50 people who may do research, etc.
Any reason NOT to use Linux for this? I have been a big booster of Linux
since 1.0.x kernel, but have never deployed it at work for fear that "you
get what you pay for" will catch up with me. But I can't stand giving money
to Microsoft. The alternative is something like Eagle on NT.

Any Linux firewall horror stories? Any great successes?

I have also tried and like the linux Router Project stuff...any comments on
that?

I have apache running on my webserver at http://venus.murraynet.net but I
have a problem. I can be at work and update my website remotely and hit
reload on my browser and it seems to show the updated page. But if I go
home or if my friends reload the page it doesn't update. Last night I
tried clearing my web-browser cache, didn't help. I restarted httpd on the
server, didn't help. I rebooted the server, didn't help. At home it is
still showing the old page and at work (here) it shows the correct page.
Don't know if it matters or not but the O/S is RedHat 5.2 for Intel. What
in the heck is going on? I edited the httpd.conf file, by the way. I made
certain all the caching features were turned off. They were by default so
I didn't need to change anything. What is the deal?

Put the client in the host file worked for me.

 like this

192.168.0.21 apollo.somedomain.com apollo

(worked for me, I am installing my fourth system now.)

I have alse heard that Mandrake has the problem also. It seems that some
security was tightened and that has made this necessary.

Hi,

I have a small network with two Linux computers. Now what I want is
this: When sending mail to someuser@mydomain, I want it to go to
mail.mydomain, which is an ip-alias of server.mydomain.
But all I get is a mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED] saying something
like:
Primary mail exchanger for mail.mydomain points back to server.mydomain.

I've read some sendmail documentation and it tells me tons on forwarding
all mail addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], but this is not really what I want.
In the DNS zonefile mail.mydomain is listed as mailexchanger for
mydomain.

Is this a problem with DNS or sendmail?

Can I make certain ip-aliases not to listen on all ports? E.g. I don't
want ftp.mydomain to respond to requests comming through port 80.

I'm using SUSE 6.0 and apart from the above my network works fine.

Thanx
Oswald

Subject: Cable Modem S L O W and Other Network Problems
Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 14:38:16 GMT

I am trying to set up my cable modem (@HOME) on my Linux box, and am
running into all sorts of problems.

I'm running RH 6.0 on a P75 with 24 megs of ram. My ethernet card is
a Linksys ne2000 compatible that is properly detected on eth0 at boot
up. I know I am at least partially connected to the internet, because
I can ping by IP and by text names. I can connect via FTP and telnet
to other machines, but get timed out because of the slowness of my
modem. I can send mail from my machine to other internet addresses.
Nslookup on my hostname comes back as correct. I can ping both of my
nameservers from my machine and others. I can pull up web sites
in Netscape by their fully qualified domain names, however this too is
very slow (5 minutes and counting to pull up Red Hat's site).

I *cannot* ping my IP address or machine name from other computers or
send mail to my machine from other computers. Also, as I mentioned, I
keep getting timed out (or give up) on ftp or telnet sessions because of
the painfully slow connection.

I am thoroughly confused, because I seem to have at least a partial
connection, and am able to resolve internet addresses, but I can't be
seen by anyone else on the internet! I followed the NET3 HOWTO and
I think my config files are all ok. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I think my hardware is adequate, but maybe not. Also, the cable modem
was initially set up on a Win98 PC using a USB port, not a regular
NIC card. Could this be causing any conflicts?

Please HELP!

TIA

Mark

I don't know about the network details but I thought you might be interested
that there was a rep. for a company providing commercial Linux support on
John Devorak's "Real Computing" show recently. I don't recall the company
but you might bet more info on some professional backing for your system
on the real computing web site.

http://www.realcomputing.com

or at least find out what company that was. I'm sure more and more are
getting into this field. Anyway, with Linux the hackers may have the
source code but at least so do you, so you have a chance to plug the
security holes. :)

If it fails only when using names it may be a DNS problem.
If it fails with both IP addresses and names then it's likely
not DNS but may be routing. Have you set up your Win95 to
use the default route and have you entered the IP addresses
for the DNS servers? Does the 'host' command work okay
looking up host names?

Hi!

I have to connect a Win95-Client to a Linux-Server over TCP-IP (PPP).
The connection
works, and I also can ping the Server (192.100.1.90) from the client
(192.100.1.190).

The only problem I have now: I can't ping the rest of the LAN behind the
Linux-Server
(for example the Client 192.100.1.63). IP-Forwarding is set to *yes*,
but it still doesn't
work.

Has anyone an idea what to do?

Thanks for your reply,

Hi, not sure where to post this. Thought i'd try here first.

We have a linux machine running as an ipmasq'ing gateway for 30 win95
pc's. recently some of them have started to grab only the first few
pages during a web browsing session and then start timing out. (they
retrieve the ip address fine, maybe from cache).

If you reboot each pc then they are fine for a while but then it starts
again.

Where should I concentrate my research?
1. the local hub?
2. cable too long?
3. win95 networking?
4. tcpip tuning or params on the linux box?

any clues would be gratefully received.

One hint, since I don't know if you're doing this already: most cable
ISPs (@home for example) require that your DHCP client supply the
hostname assigned to you. In the Windows DHCP settings there should be a
hostname; make sure your linux DHCP client is using the "-h hostname"
option. You may need to upgrade to a later version of DHCP that supports
this, if yours doesn't.

If you're using netcfg to configure your interface, you may have to edit
the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup script and modify the line that
invokes dhcpcd, adding the -h hostname option.

Hope this helps,
Phil

This is a problem. If you're serving the domain, you should be
authoritative. It's probably just a typo in your zone file. Perhaps your
SOA record has an error or you don't have the correct NSERV records. We
automatically check for stray commas and such when we get such errors in
the domains we run. Try setting up a log for bind and see what messages
develop.

> *** dns1.maddogsbreakfast.com.au can't find maddogsbreakfast.com.au:
> Server failed

You'll need an "IN" line for each name that you want to appear.

So, if you have a line like:
maddogsbreakfast.com.au. IN A 203.41.238.33
or
@ IN A 203.41.238.33

it'll resolve the name "maddogsbreakfast.com.au".

You should also put in an MX record for maddogsbreakfast.com.au to make
sure the mail always goes to the right place.

Now, you might be tempted to do something like

@ IN CNAME dns1.maddogsbreakfast.com.au

Do NOT do this. It will not work.

Instead, do something like

@ IN A 203.41.238.33
dns1 IN CNAME @
www IN CNAME @

which is the sort of thing that works for me.

I have a small LAN with a Linux router allowing it to access the

How could I set up a cachine DNS server to help speed up my access as my

I could put them in manually into hosts but that would be rather a drag
as I have quite a few favourite sites and some of them have changed ISPs
in the past so I dont want to have to keep reconfiguring it.
