You didn't mention whether or not you mapped a drive to the samba share.
I've found from other CD's (not Office2K, though) that I needed to have the
share actually mapped to a drive letter in order to do an install. It would
choke if I tried doing it through the network name (//server/share).
I hope that's it.

Subject: Linux NFS client and IRIX NFS server
Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 16:32:40 -0700
We have been having some problems with the linux NFS client talking to
an IRIX NFS server.
Here is the scenario. Our developers have SGI boxes on their desktops
and they are editing their code on those boxes. They also have a Linux
RH5.2 box running 2.2.1 kernel. When they are done making changes to
their code they save their files and then run make in the Linux box
window. The Linux box might see the changes to the file in about 30-60
seconds after they save the file. Our developers are saving their files
to an SGI NFS server.
I tried the following test.
SGI client box A
SGI client box B
Linux client
SGI Server
On SGI client A, I created a file and saved it to SGI server. I then
tried to cat the file on SGI client B and on Linux client. SGI client B
was almost instantaneous, and I had to wait for several seconds before
I could cat the file on Linux client
Is there any way to speed this up? Instead of jacking up the attribute
caching min and max is there a way to force the Linux client to flush
the attribute cache and re-read the directory contents?
Also on a related topic why do we see very little latency on SGI boxes
when talking to the same server when all mount parameters (attribute
caching, etc) are set the same way?
Thanks

The easiest would be to run your standard POP daemon, and get a tiny client
like Watchdog to check your mail at a given interval. I've been running it
for months and the bandwidth usage is unnoticable.

Subject: Linux on a COMPAQ DESKPRO 4100

Yo..
I'm running Linux Redhat 5.2 using kernel 2.2.9 on a Compaq Deskpro 4100
(486, 100 Mhz). This machine has an embedded AMD Ethernet controller on the
PCI bus...
I'm using the AMD/Lance drivers, which detect the Ethernet device as a
"PCNET/PCI on IRQ 11" (the default IRQ as set in the bios).
And this is ALL it does... It detects the card... It resuses to do anything
more.. I'm unable to ping any other PC in my network...
The linux installation I'm using was originally installed on another
machine, using an 8 bit WD8003 Ethernet card which worked fine. I've simply
swapped the harddisk to my "new" machine and re-compiled the kernel with the
AMD-drivers... Is there anything else I should do?
Does anybody has any experience how getting this card to work? If you guys
need more info, let me know what...
Thanx,
Remco

You need the forwarding/gatewaying stuff setup. Check out the Firewall
and Firewall + Bridge HOWTO at the HOWTO archives.

You've setup the IP's right, it just doesn't know what to do with the
packets when it sees.

I missed the original post, but certainly a swap *file* can be created,
and that swap file can be located on an NFS mount. Now, all of this
has always seemed rather academic to me, since, if a machine is already
in trouble due to lack of real memory, thereby requiring paging space,
the additional burden of having to network to paging space would seem
intolerable. That's a lot of datagrams! Besides, disk drives are about
the cheapest commodity around these days.

Produce one and we'll look it over. Thus far nothing so hyped

so there's no choice but to check out each new claimant.

I believe you are there, you just haven't set the Netscape Preferences
(Advanced Proxy setup, etc).
Try ignoring the message and going to a known address like
'www.yahoo.com'. It may work. If not,
get the correct 'name server' info from your ISP and modify your Netscape
Preferences.
At any rate, if you know the actual IP address of the site you want, you
should be able to type:
http://<IP address> and get there.

The 3c905's are great cards, but they're still a tad expensive compared
to some of the other cards available on the market. I've seen equal
reliability and throughput from the Netgear FA-310TX which was, for a while,
selling for $11 at Buy.Com. The price recently went up a bit.
Considering that the cheapest price for a 3C905 is $60, that is a difference
if you're setting up a lot of machines. Coax is not expandible (speed), and you
have no management capability like you could add on with a switch or hub
module. If you only want 10Mbps, and you're not playing a lot of games, etc.
or transferring a lot of files, Coax might be a cheaper route to take.
However, 100Mbps networking is so cheap now (check out Netgear products @
www.buycomp.com to see what I mean) it's almost stupid not to go with it.
If you want to save the initial cost of a 100Mbps hub, you can now pick up
a 10Mbps hub for around $18-$20. Be careful with hubs, though... Had bad
luck with Linksys (aka Linkshit), some no-name hubs, and the SOHOWare hubs..

I'm doing it. It is not a perfect fix, but very good. Just go to:

and follow the links to his Netscape on Linux fixes.
