Here at White Horse (english school in Taiwan), we just had some college
students setup LINUX and an NIS network for us. But they have gone home
for the summer, and I need to add users to so that the English students
can login from anywhere on the network. I'm sure this is extremely
simple. I would have thought it was covered in the HOWTO, or an FAQ. But
I have not been able to find anything. What do I have to do? Surely it
is jsut a file I have to edit like passwd or something. Where is it? Or
is there a utility to do this?
We are running Redhat 6.0.

Run sendmail in deferred-delivery mode.
Then in your /etc/ppp/ip-up script, run "sendmail -q".

I don't know much about ftpd, but I have a pub folder, which I can access as
an anonymous user. I made a softlink from that folder to another folder in
/home/user. When I can see the link in ftp, which looks like a folder. I
try to cd over to it, and tells me no such file. What's the deal. From my
Linux box, this works good, but not from the outside.

Hi All,
I'm running RH 6.0 - just upgraded from 5.2.
When I do a arp -a or a route RH takes forever to return the configuration.
Litterly minutes of wait - and arp doesn't see all computers on the network.
I know I must have a network configuration problem, I just don't know what
could cause a situation like that. Suggestions are very welcome.

Can I ask for help??? Mike, how's Boston? Grew up in
Concord...
New to Linux. Installed RH6.0, did not see my D-LinkDFE530
so I had to compile (following instructions! Not out of
any great knowledge!).. the Via-Rhine.c driver... it
DID GIVE me some compile errors, but when I checked the
directory (usr/src/linux ????? ) the 'via-rhine.o' was
there. I set it up in the etc/conf.modules as the alias
eth0 and then went into KDE and set the config. for it.
I can ping my Novell 5.0 server and my Win98 workstation.
Both ways.. So it "SEEMS" okay there.
My plans are to set it up with MediaOne RoadRunner here
in 'rocken 'rollin L.A. I want to share it to my
small two user home network... want to eliminate the
possibility of 'mail bombs' thru my Linux box to the
ISP, or access to my system... this would be the firewall,
but also what about SENDMAIL?? Completely disable it???
Well, I've more questions..Appreciate the help. Thanks.

Oh god, it's been many many years since anything like this was on the
market. Some cards *are* aware of TCP/IP in some sense, by means of
their drivers. You are correct, AFAIK, in asserting that the NICs
themselves [we're talking hardware here] are pretty dumb. If the driver
refuses to put the card into the proper mode, and writing a custom
driver is out of the question [as it was most of the time about ten
years ago], then if the driver doesn't want to cooperate the card won't
either.
Sorry to be unclear about that, but most people I know don't distinguish
between the NIC and the drivers. I tend to just think in terms of
`ifconfig` affecting the card itself, but in reality it of course does
not.

EEEEE..... head on over to http://www.livingston.com/ and buy a portmaster.
Linux works great for a smaller (5-10 ports) RAS, but when you get more
than that with Digital, it's much easier (and more economical) to setup
a Lucent box.
If you were to setup individual ISDN modems, you'd have to buy tons of
BRI lines for it. It might be economical for what you're doing, but the
Lucent boxes are ROCK solid, and the big advantage is that they remain
seperate from your Linux box. We've had the PM3 running for 3 years
now and it hasn't had a problem once.

Maybe reverse DNS lookups trying to resolve the cached IP addresses to
hostnames. Try: arp -n -a
This shows IP addresses only. If that's fast, the problem was reverse
address resolution.
Also arp -a won't show the whole network - only systems your box
has talked to recently.

Of course. Moving from 2.0 to 2.2 kernel is a major upgrade, not like
2.0.35 to 2.0.36.
Go to any one of a number of Linux kernel sites and they'll have lists
of minimum versions of packages to get things working with the new
kernel. Here's one such:

Subject: Can I use Linux as a server to a Windows based calendar/scheduling
application?
Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 17:59:35 -0700
I am now in charge of the network at a Chuch. One of the first goals they
set is email for everyone. It wasn't difficult at all for me to convince
them to let me build a Linux email server (Red Hat 6.0). I haven't done it
before but it should be educational.
I have a question though. I would like to give them the ability to have a
group calendar and group schedule. There is no way I could convince them to
switch the desktops over to Linux (I don't think I would want to train 30
computer illiterate people on Linux). What I am interested in is some
server type software that would interface with some off-the-shelf Windows
software (like Outlook or an equivalent). They have suggested MS Exchange
but I really don't want them to have to spend the money though Exchange
would handle email, calendaring and scheduling (plus it will be fun for me
to learn how to do it with Linux). Is there any such server for Linux? I
am by no means a Linux guru, I have only just started dealing with Linux
networking.
Any advice, pointers or URLs are appreciated.

Many people are either unwilling or unable to assume the burden of
rigorous engineering. In fact, they are overwhelmingly in the majority.
For easy problems, any language will do. For problems where the
answer doesn't matter much, almost any language will do.
Still, rigorous engineering is needed in many places, and languages
that support it are needed in those places. C++ is currently the
most powerful of such languages.

Logging in as user pmr, I can establish a ppp connection using the

Can anyone advise what to look for?

You also should set up your (or the user's) .bash_profile to check for
the terminal device and set up the environemnt variable TERM
accordingly, in this case,
export TERM=vt100
for the wyse 150 if you use it in vt100 mode,
export TERM=wyse150
if you use it in Wyse 150 mode.
Also it can be set to 24 or 25 lines in its setup, so if you set it up
for 25 lines, look in /usr/lib/terminfo/w for a wse 150 or wyse 120 with
-25 in th ename, and use that for the TERM variable.
