Your documentation and minicom verison may be incompatible. Try using
Alt-a instead of Ctrl-a; if it works then use Alt instead of Ctrl for
all the others too.

Better is relative. Minicom is simple, not cranky, and works well. You
need to use the chat program to do dialing for pppd of course.

The plaintext password reg files for Win98, 95 and NT are in a directory
under the samba documentation -- /usr/docs/samba-x.x.x

Let me guess, you just upgraded to redhat 6.0, right? I just did that
(upgrade from RH5.2) and am having the same symptoms. Note that in
/var/log/messages I see:

Jul 3 15:54:08 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
Jul 3 15:54:09 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-26
Jul 3 15:54:09 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24

I am only beginning to look at this problem, but haven't found anything yet.
I'll be sure to mail you when I find a solution.

yes, there is something going on with ppp, since my ethernet card works just
fine. Yes, ping's work, but any tcp connection (telnet, http) doesn't seem to
do anything right.

I haven't yet found a solution.

Yes, it used to work before I upgraded from rh5.2

Hi, I have a strange problem when I'm connected to my ISP (which is a
modem conection to Duke). What is happening is that once I connect and
say surve the web for a while, all of the sudden my netscape can't
connect to any place anymore (I get "Connect: Looking up host:
www.blahblah.com" and nothing happens), or I can't send any email with
my email (kmail) program, nor can i telnet. I noticed that if I
reconnect (i.e. disconnect and then connect back again) it again works
for a while (say 7 minutes). At the same time if from the beginning I'm
listening to some live real audio, then it sometimes stops as well,
while sometimes DOESN'T!

So I dont understand what is going on. Please, help with your thoughts
on that.
thanks.

How do I install my (NexNIC by unex) Ethernetcard and get my connection
running. It comes with very little documentation.
I have tried to do it by "make menuconfig" as a NE1000/NE2000 compatible
card, since that was what the documentation said.
(Yes. I did make dep, make clean, make zlilo and put the new path in
lilo.conf)
I'm just trying to make a workstation out of my RedHat to begin with.
Eventually I will make it a webserver.

summary:
1. How do I get my card running, and verify that my card works properly?
2. How do I get my connection with my ISP running?

Subject: Collisions using Xserver-Windoze?
Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1999 12:39:33 -0700

Hi,

Does anyone know how to fix a problem with massive collisions if you're
running an Xserver on Winblows? More specifically, I have a Linux (RH6) and
Windoze (NT 4, SP5) connected on a hub. The NT box is running X-Win32 as an
X-server but whenever I launch anything using the NT box as the display, I
get MASSIVE collisions. To the point that if I run some X program on my NT,
after about 1/2 hour, I'll bring the little network down. But, if I don't
display on the X-server (e.g., use the NT's dinky telnet or use X-Win to
telnet to an outside box and then telnet from that outside box to the Linux
machine) then I get 0 collisions. I tried other X-servers (even VNC) but
they all do the same thing... if I use anything graphical or X-server based,
the collisions skyrocket. If I just use the dinky telnet or do all my
X-server stuff on the console itself, 0 collisions. Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks,

Rick.

Hello,

I run Suse 6.1
I have just configured an ippp0 and a eth0 interface. Ippp interface
works fine, so does the eth0 interface. But I have a problem with my
eth0 interface : other users of our local network can reach my PC, but I
can't
myself reach other users. When I type the IP adress of a PC of my own
network, the system
looks for a PC on the Internet using the ippp interface. Where can I
configure this? The /etc/hosts file is already configured.
Thank you in advance

Unix systems are very flexible, especially when source code is available
and you can compile programs yourself. RedHat decided where they wanted
the files to be and compiled the program to match those paths. If you use
an RPM version of apache, everything should be where it is expected to be
found. If you download the apache source from www.apache.org and compile
it yourself, you will need to pay attention to where default locations are
or how to modify them to your liking.

The default apache source used to look for different files at 2 locations
(something like /usr/local/etc/httpd and /usr/local/etc/apache), so I
usually just made a symlink so files could be found at either path.
Not sure if that has been fixed.

Also, I have seen other mention that NT has a lpr demon/service that

Most likely nothing but it's hard to tell with what you wrote. I
assume you are asking a question concerning Samba.

If you are wondering if the smbd deamon should be running, the
best I can answer is that it does not run continually on my system.
Sometimes it is there when I check and other times it is not.

first: is the nic recognized at boot-time? (dmesg, and look for any
lines with eth0)
if not , yes you either rebuild your kernel * to support your nic, or if
you already did , maybe the nic is not working properly
( most of them come with a disk , to test and configure them from dos,
so pls test it ).

This configuration produces no errors and works great. However, the
first one, for the zac.wnet segment, does NOT work and produces the
error in the logfile. I tested the wec.wnet network with nslookup and
was able to pull information on both wec.wnet and zac.wnet. Using
nslookup at ns.zac.wnet works for zac.wnet but produces an error for
wec.wnet. Am I overlooking something?

Thanks for the suggestions. There are 3 PCI slots on the machine, and I
now see that one of them is unusable, because a clock chip is in the
way. This, in itself, makes me think that maybe my machine is a piece
of junk, and that this may be the main problem. The BIOS has no setting
referring to latency (or bus-master slots). I've tried the board in the
two possible slots, and I've tried via-rhine drivers dated as new as
4/30/99 (v1.02), though I bought my board about a year ago.

I guess it's time to get a new machine. I suppose there could be some
conflict on either io addresses or IRQs (I still haven't figured out
fully how to determine or avoid such conflicts), but I don't think that
would account for the "PCI latency timer" message in any case.

Thanks,

One last thing. I upgraded from 9x to NT. It worked perfectly, and my drives
were even converted to NTFS, so NT upgrades do work.

Hello,

I have a proble using netstat. When I issue the netstat command I get
the following readout :

Netstat : error in loading shared libraries
: undefined symbol : __ register _ frame _ info

This problem seems to be concurrent with the isntallation of net-tools
1.51-1.

I also get the same message during system boot repeated a couple of
times before it is subdued.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Hi. Had to take my company's linux box home over the weekend to
configure Apache. I screwed something up and had to reinstall apache
1.3.3-1 from the Red Hat 5.2 distribution. Luckily, there was nothing
other than the defaults configured yet. But now when I run Netscape and
test the installation by point it to <http://localhost> it just hangs.
At the office I got a new browser screen congratulating me for a good
install. Anybody know what I could;ve done wrong? Thanks.

Subject: Samba 2.0.3 not visible in Network neighbourhood on NT

Hi Folks!

Maybe this is a FAQ, but this problem I can' t solve:

I=B4m running Samba 2.0.3 on  S.u.S.E. Linux 6.1 (kernel 2.1.7).  My
server is visible on our Win95 boxes,
not on NT 4.0 SP3 Server. SendPlainTextPassword is enabled. The Linux
box is listed in the NTs hosts and
lmhosts file.

I can search and find the server with search/Computer. When I try to
connect I=B4m aske for name and password.

Where is that thing to turn on or off to get the Linux box visible?

Any help welcome

I would like to develope a router/gateway/firewall system using a linux
box.

The ideal system would have up to eight network interfaces. I am aware
of an adaptec ana 62044 multiport nic. Will this, or a similar product,
work under any version of linux ? If so, is it possible to get two such
devices working ?

Hi All
Anyone know if its possible to get the smb protocol working
over a ppp dialup link? I want to be able to map a network
drive on my server after I have dialed-in. The client is
WinNT/Win95 and the server is Linux redHat 5.2 running
Samba. Any help would be appreciated.

I apologise if the answer is in a FAQ somewhere. I looked
but could not find anything pertinent.
