I am looking to setup a network as my needs are expanding and a file
server would be better for me. With all I've read linux is the way to go.
My question to everyone is, I do my work in MS Office 97. Can I setup linux
as a file server for and acces my files off of the linux server so that
others can access the files also? Any other info is appreciated.

I have been looking at Diald 0.99 to set up demand dialing on RH 6.0,
but it is not obvious how to fit it together with 'ifup ppp0' management
that I am using now. Are there other ways to do this without rewriting
all the ppp scripts?
Is there a place to go to get configurations (even RPMs :) appropriate
for RH 6.0?
After that, the next step is masquerading for my local network, but one
step at a time.
Would that Red Hat would see this as something to support.
Thanks for any help. Please email ideas to me. I am not a newbie, but I
didn't want to devote my life to this project!

you need to delete the lock file in /var/run/pptp/. I can't remeber it's
name but it'll be obvious once you see it.
If you get this working, please let me know - I'm on to other
authentication probs :)

I have ppp-2.3.7-2 and RH6.0. I had ppp all set up and working fine,
until I ran into the 'only root can establish connections' issue. read
several threads, and ended up installing diald 0.16 and it worked great
(for root and non-root). upgraded to diald 0.99 and everything stopped
working. as I researched the problem, someone mentioned that
ppp-2.3.7-2 supports demand-dialing and that diald is no longer
necessary. great. I've reinstalled ppp-2.3.7 and I'm back to the point
where only root can initiate a connection.
the pppd man page says:
OPTIONS
active-filter filter-expression
Specifies a packet filter to be applied to data packets to
determine which packets are to be regarded as link activity, and
therefore reset the idle timer, or cause the link to be brought up in
demand-dialling [sic] mode. This option is useful in conjunction with
the idle option if there are packets being sent or received regularly
over the link which would otherwise prevent the link from ever appearing
to be idle. The filter-expression syntax is as described for
tcpdump(1), except that qualifiers which are inappropriate for a PPP
link, such as ether and arp, are not permitted.....
now, I understand most of this, but what I can't figure is in the netcfg
tool in RedHat, I can give ppd options. I'd like to give it:
active-filter ???? I don't know what tcpdump(1) is. any help
appreciated.
again, my goal is to enable demand-dialing which will establish a PPP
link when a client is started by a user, aleiviating the need to open up
pppd to all users, and avoiding diald.

I've used it to connect to a System/390 at work from home. I just wish
it would work with IPX/SPX. My work has recently dropped the TCP/IP
connections.

Installed Mandrake 6.0 last night, works beautifully. The installation
proggie detected the NIC fine and all seemed to work well...
Today I had a cable modem installed and I noticed the strangest thing
happening when I went to setup linux to use DHCP on the adapter: about 5
secs after Lilo starts the linux boot, I loose link on said cable modem (the
link LED on the modem and the NIC flash and then go out). I was playing with
some of the networking settings in linuxconf, and now I get a "FAILED"
message when trying to initialize eth0 during linux boot, and still no link.
Any suggestions? BTW, not new to comps or networking, but a mere 3 days babe
with linux.
Any help is appreciated.

I have several Win95 boxes masqueraded behind a linux box which is set
up to use the pppd demand option (i.e. dial on demand). Win95's
Multiple Protocol Router service (MPREXE.EXE), wakes up about every 10
or 15 minutes and makes a DNS request. Since the Win95 boxes are
configured with my ISP's DNS addresses, this is an "out of LAN" request
and therefore causes the linux box to dial out. I don't want to stay
connected when I'm not really doing anything with the internet, so I
need to somehow identify and discard these packets BEFORE they wake up
pppd and cause it to dial out.
I'm guessing it would be possible to do this with an IPCHAINS rule or
the like. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Anybody got a peer to peer going with a Mac and an Intel Linux box ? I've got
Appletalk working fine on the Intel/Linux Box but can't get the Mac to talk to
it. It doesn't make a connection.
I would appreciate any help in this area. I'd like to use the Intel box as a
file server to the Mac and if possible allow the mac to copy files to the
Linux box.

I recently had a cable modem installed in my house and wanted to connect my
linux box running RH 6.0 to the modem. My server runs on a Compaq 9232
running at 90 MHz with 40 MB of RAM
The modem uses DHCP to get all the network info to the machine. I currently
have one NetGear FA310TX ethernet card in the machine. I have configured
this card (eth0) as DHCP. The problem is that it does not get any IP
address that I can see through netcfg. I have configured the machine with
the proper DNS servers as well as the gateway used by the cable modem
(Obtained by connecting an NT server to the modem and running ipconfig). Is
there anyone who has experienced the same problem or know what the solution
to my problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

so, what is the comsat service? I didn't do anything from the local host (that

the message). All my tests of the warning system were conducted from another
host.

I have a kinda strang erouting problem that only started when I upgraded
my kernel to 2.2.10, I'm using route 1.96 from net-tools 1.52.
Basically all my network routes are doubled. ie:

look for vnc, its a remote tool, freeware, lets you export your gui (
like kde, fvwm2, whatever) to the screen of your win-box.
having just one console ( telnet, xterm, whatever) seems so limiting
sometimes.

i don't know whats wrong with your smbmount,
but i see 3 possibilities:
1.: set up sambaserver on your linux-box, create a public share there,
make it rw for guests, and access it from the win-box
2.: set up ftp-server on your linux-box, and ftp from win
3.: create a nfs-share on your lin-box, but you would need a nfs-client
on your win to access it ( i don't know any freeware here)
the main idea seems to be to put the files from the win side instead of
pulling from linux

Greetings,
I am trying to telnet into a Linux RedHat 5.2 machine on our LAN from an
NT 4 Server on the same LAN, but it is immediately refused before even
getting to the point of asking for a login name and password.
The error returned is "Connection Failed!".
The strange thing is that all other machines can telnet into linux no
problem, and even the NT Server can ping and ftp the linux machine, just
not telnet.
We have checked the hosts file on each machine and the opposing number
is listed in each.
Any pointers please!!?

what does not do what?
is your nic recognized at boot-time?
can you ping your linuxbox, from itself ( ping localhost)?
can you ping to and from your linuxbox , adress and name?
( this means the basics are there )
you want to do THE samba,
there is a pretty good troubleshooting-process somewhere in
/docs/textdocs ( called diagnosis.txt)
you go through it and any step don't work, come back and post it.
