In Samba's config, have it announce itself to your WINS server.

Some DHCP servers require a host name to be sent with the DHCP request.
Take a look at the -h hostname option of dhcpcd. Apparently, all MS
operating systems send the hostname by default. I needed to add -h for my
DSL connection.

Yes, you can!
Check out SAMBA software. You can read some info about it on
http://www.samba.org
It's not Linux specific software, but very popular in the Linux community
due to the fact that it's free and allows us to use Linux server as a SMB
(Windows) file server.
Good luck!

There's a file called /etc/conf.modules, which can help you to
automatically map the 2 NICs correctly (unless you have PNP enabled ...
I haven't tried that yet). Can't seem to find the manual right now, but
mine looks something like this (I've got an EL3 on 0x300 and a standard

Subject: Redhat 5.2 can't see Netgear FA310TX
Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 23:05:17 -0700
Hey all,
I'm running Redhat 5.2 on my Pentium 166 and PII 350 and for some reason I
can't get Redhat to see my NICs. I'm using Netgear FA310TX cards. They
work great under Win95 and Win98, but Redhat can't see either one of them.
I've tried the following two methods of getting my RH to see them:
There are two methods to install the FA310TX Linux driver.
Installation Procedure for Monolithic Kernel
--------------------------------------------
1. cp tulip.c /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip.c
2. /usr/src/linux# make config
set the following
a. EISA, VLB, PCI and on board controllers (CONFIG_NET_EISA) [N/y/?] Y
b. DECchip Tulip (dc21x4x) PCI support (CONFIG_DEC_ELCP) [N/y/m/?] Y
3. Rebuild and install new kernel and reboot.
a. make dep
b. make clean
c. make zImage or make zlilo
(When I do the make config I get an error saying that there's no target.)
Installation Procedure for Modular Kernel
-----------------------------------------
1. Compile tulip.c.
gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall -Wstrict-prototype
s -O6 -c tulip.c
2. Copy tulip.o into the latest kernel's modules.
cp tulip.o /lib/modules/2.0.XX/net/tulip.o
3. Update kernel's module dependencies.
/sbin/depmod -a
4. Add the following in /etc/conf.modules.
alias eth0 tulip
5. Reboot the system.
(I get a message saying there's no such directory or file even after I
created the directories, and I'm in the directory where the tulip.c file is)
Can someone tell me how to get my RH to see these cards? I would really
appreciate it!
Thanks,
Joe

RedHat is probably thinking too much with their other head hence the word
PUMP. What a silly name for DHCP server. What a ridiculous introduction of
a broken product into a mainstream product.
Just go back to the older DHCP server. Don't bother getting the RPM upgrade
for PUMP.

this is more kind of hinting, i don't understand what they say -

why should the adress be 0.0.0.0 ? should be xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - your

Subject: Linux can not see more than one NIC card in one PC??
Date: 5 Jul 1999 23:54:12 -0700
this is red hat 6.0 (kernel 2.2).
I am unable to make Linux see more than one NIC card.
I added a second NIC to my PC, but now I am having a hard time
telling Linux to use it. It seems it want to only use ONE NIC
card.
When I added a second NIC (NE2000 card), and rebooted, I find
that eth0 now is the new NIC card I added, and Linux did not
see the first card I had. I was expecting to see eth0 and eth1,
since I have 2 NIC cards. one device per NIC card.
Now, this is the output of dmesg showing that Linux saw the
new Card I added but did not see the other one:
>>>>>
: ne.c:v1.10 9/23/94 Donald Becker ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
: NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x280: 00 40 33 e0 95 af
: eth0: NE2000 found at 0x280, using IRQ 5.
>>>>>>
Before I added the above NIC card, this is the dmseg output, showing
the other NIC card I have in the PC :
>>>
: tulip.c:v0.89H 5/23/98 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
: eth0: Lite-On 82c168 PNIC at 0x1400, c0 00 2c f0 1a 73, IRQ 11.
: eth0: MII transceiver found at MDIO address 1, config 3100 status 7829.
>>>>
So, now When I do
ifconfig eth1 <some IP address>
Linux tells me that no such device exist.
My first NIC card was a PCI card, this second card I added (NE2000)
is an ISA card.
I looked at Linux configuration (make xconfig) and did not see some
option to allow more than one network interface to exist. (do I need
to do something special to create eth1 device?) why did Linux not
see the second NIC card now?
any help will be appreciated.
thanks,
Mark

Presumably this means that as far as you're concerned, any wars in which
the US didn't participate never happened at all. How lovely it must be to

Subject: Re: "invalid password" (Win95) using samba
Date: Tue, 06 Jul 1999 11:11:16 +0200
Recently, someone came with the golden tip. Had something to do with
smbadduser -e <username> (or was it smbpasswd? Have to check on that). The
-e option enables the user. This worked for me: My users have their own
share on the Linux depending on their Windows logon name. This is
mandatory: You HAVE to logon to Windows ("Close all programs and logon as
another user" in the start/shutdown box). This logon name is the name it
will use to identify itself to the Linux box. On Linux, there is a
smbusers file which you can use to match for the different names between
windows and Linux/samba, like
Frankw = Frank "Frank Waarsenburg"
(The quotes are necessary because of the space between first name and
surname)
This says that Linux user Frankw equals W9x user Frank or Frank
Waarsenburg. Since I also use my employers Laptop on my home network, I
have 2 names to identify myself... Most of you will use one name only.
If you also synchronize your W9x and Linux password, you even don't have
to type the password when connecting to Linux: It will automatically
login. I give users parts of the Linux HD by using /data/%u and this works
great. If anyone still has problems after this explanation, I can post my
smb.conf
Let me know...

The question is.
Where can I get information about the structure of the linux comstack? Some
