Thanks to all who responded,
but what I just wanted to know is "what to do if kill -9 doesn't work ?"
(I thought it would end up in a netscape thread, if I would mention
netscape in my first mail)
It has nothing to do with root (no matter where the KILL (kill -9)
-signal comes from [if senders is allowed to kill the proc]) or too old
netscape version (I use 4.6, nothing from any linux-distribution) and it
also isn't a zombie.
Anyway there doesn't seem to be any harder than kill -9 I think ?

That's what you get for overclocking the damn thing. Don't you know that
stray quanta leaking from a NUCNIC running in an out-of-parameters
configuration can cause time displacement problems in the probability
matrix leading to cross-posting trolls appearing on usenet? Didn't you
read the manual?

Dear Gavin,
Internet card problem solved! My problem was caused by an IRQ conflict!
Maybe a hint to check for possible IRQ conflicts too!

Subject: netatalk and printing
Date: Thu, 08 Jul 1999 12:32:25 +0200
Hiho,
I hvae a big problem trying to print using netatalk from my Linux
(LinuxPPC R5 on an G3 beige Apple desktop) to a printer that is
available via an Applenetwork.
atalkd runs. I have a correcvt printcap file and a .paprc and papd.conf
file. The directories (spool ...) are set up correctly.
When I now try to print to the printer nothing happens. in
/var/log/messages I get the following message:
Jul 7 15:42:11 milo psf[4449]: starting for ?
but then nothing happens. (Usually there should be somehting like
"sending to pap" or so.)
When I look at the lpd-errs file, my error-log that I defined in
printcap, it is still empry. When I look at the lock file it has a name
of a file with cf in the beginning, but this file is nowhere to be
found. (I used R4 before and there the files appeared in the spool
directory.) Then there is a .seq file that only contains three numbers:
00x with x being basically something like the number of times I tried to
print something. It seems to be just a counter.
When I look at the new rpm of netatalk there is something missing in
comparison with the old ones. There seem to have been a directory called
/usr/lib/atalk/filters
which is now empty. (BTW, I do have psf, of course),
Now, my question: What is going wrong? I assume that psf does not
produce the file to be printed by pap. Why is that so?
Thanks a lot, I'm really hoping for a quick answer,
JP

Why screw with the Windows registry and risk messing up your computer (sure, it's
a small risk, but a risk none the less) when you can enable password encryption on
Samba and not have to worry about something crashing? Also make sure you use
smbpasswd to set your Samba password (if it is the first time you have to login as
root and use the -a option with the username to add the entry to the database).

This is probably operator error, but it's kind of nasty, so please help me if
you can. I needed to move my /boot from /dev/sda5 to /dev/sdb5 (long story,
but had to be done). First I changed the files /etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf
to reflect the move, and then I ran /sbin/lilo. Then I used Partition Magic to
move the partition.
No problems with the move itself; I can boot just fine after that. (I use
System Commander to boot LILO, which lives now -- I do believe -- on
/dev/sdb5.) But now, every time I come out of Linux on a reboot, the first
primary on the boot drive (sda1) is no longer set as active. Nothing boots,
and I get an error that there is no active partition on the drive. Looking at
it with a Partition Magic rescue disk confirms that the first primary on the
boot disk has been set inactive by something. I can set it active again, and
then all is well with all the other OSes . . . until the next reboot after a
Linux session, which sets it inactive again. How did I screw this up, and how
do I fix it?

I had the same problem. Add the following to your /etc/conf.modules file
alias ppp-compress-21 slhc
alias ppp-compress-24 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
I have seen different variations of the above, but this seems to fix the
problem. At least it did for me.

following sites:
This site has a step by step howto for complete setup of samba. steps
for both linux and the win machine. (and they really work <G>)

The road forks here.
One way:
Set up the printer for Linux via a magicfilter & ghostscript. Likely
you can find an input filter that will work, try aspfilter and
magicfilter. Now your fileserver will handle postscript very nicely.
Lie to windows, tell it that the network printer is something that
speaks postscript.
Second way:
Set up raw access to the printer. On the windows side, tell windows the
true identity of the printer.

I still have problems about diald that dials every time.
With this forum help I reduced the situations that the diald dials, but
it stills happened.
I try to indentify tcpdump messages but I can't understand how to
"convert" the informations to standard.filter format.
I'm thinking about workarround solutions because I have only needs to
access http pages, send and receive emails, access newsserver and
transfer FTP files. Why "we" cannot configure the standard.filter to
accept only these net messages instead accept all and filter "almost"
all.
In my system I use samba (essential), sendmail. I already disabled
named.
I have some additional questions:
1> If I use pppd dial on demand feature (I need to recompile my kernel
to do that), can I solve my problems or I have the same filtering needs?
2> I already put a message asking about to create a script that dials
and activate pppd from my intranet. I can create a little program that
send to my server a message to activate a cgi-script and this script
connect to internet (simulating Windows local dialup connection). I
have only a problem: I'm very new with linux and I don't know how can I
start to do that. Any ideas?

this in the help page:
Getting Net2Phone to work through a firewall:
"Net2Phone uses two ports, UDPPORT and TCPPORT.
PCs calling with Net2Phone use the UDPPORT to send
your voice to the called party and use the TCPPORT
to
route the call back to your PC. Your network
administrator from your ISP must tell you the ports
for
you to use when calling with Net2Phone. Each port
should have a numeric value ranging from 1 to

Once you receive the UDPPORT and TCPPORT, you
will need to modify your net2fone.ini

So can someone tell me how to make these ports on the linux box so the

I've got IP adressess from 212.244.195.88-95 and my router
works on 212.244.195.88 (192.168.168.168 on the local side).
And when I do :
ifconfig eth0 212.244.195.90 netmask 255.255.255.248 up
route add -net 192.168.168.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
route add default gw 192.168.168.168 eth0
www server is seen on the internet but I can't get in from

I suppose the problem is becouse of netmask 255.255.255.248
When I changed it to 255.255.255.0 it worked ok. But I'm not

Further investigation reveals that the 2 cards are reported as having the
same IO, but different IRQ.
According to the DOS config util, they are configured at different IO and
IRQ, but when after loading 3c59x.o they are reported as above.
Linux does not find them on boot, so 3c59x.o is loaded manually. IP
addresses can be bound to both adapters, but only one will work at any
given time. Have enabled/disabled PnP BIOS, lilo.conf has:
append = "ether=11,fc80,eth0 ether=9,fc00,eth1"
No idea what to do!! Help!

Add some IP Firewall rules to your /etc/ppp/ip-up and /etc/ppp/ip-down
scripts. ip-up can add the rules for your ppp link, and ip-down can
revoke them.
Since the parameters passed to ip-up (and ip-down) include things like
(a) the interface name (ppp0, etc.), (b) the _local_ ip address (i.e.
the IP address of your end of the ppp connection), and (c) the
_remote_ ip address (the IP address of your ISP's end of the ppp
connection), it's not difficult to write a number of 'append' rules to
handle firewalling dynamically.

Subject: subnetmask (function) / Funktion der Subnetmask
Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 13:39:39 +0200
Hallo
(deutsche Version weiter unten!)
I'd like to know why one needs a subnetmask. (What is it for?)
In my Opinion the IP-Adresse divides the Network in two parts (if you're
using an IP-Adresse 192.168.0.x and an IP-Adresse 192.168.1.x [two
Subnets]), doesn't it?
Additionally
[for example
192.168 .0.80
(Netanteil)(Hostanteil).
]
My question: why do you need a subnetmask??? What does the subnetmask
divides (up)?
(May you give me an example?)
Thanks
Phil

Hallo
Ich mchte gerne wissen, fr welchen Zweck die Subnet Mask verwendet
wird. Die IP-Adresse grenzt ja das Netz (Netzteil) ein, oder nicht?
[z.B.
192.168 .0.80
(Netzanteil)(Hostanteil).
]
Fr was wird die genau Subnetmask bentigt. Was unterteilt sie?
herzlichen Dank im Voraus
gruss phil

That's not a shadowed password file. The /etc/passwd has an encrypted(fairly
weak) password. There are many easily available pograms to crack those
passwords. to use the shadowed passwords you have to convert your /etc/passwd
file using pwconv. This will place an X in the field where the password hash
was in /etc/passwd and place those hashes into /etc/shadow wich is readable
only by root and its processes (eg. login). Otherwise users can just copy
the hashes run the crack and have your whole list of logins and passwords.
