Hi,

I've just installed Red Hat 5.0 (kernel 2.2.5) on a laptop. and this is
my first time. I managed to get it on to the network. But it becomes
very slow when it is not hooked to the network. (PC card is 3COM
LAN+modem). It takes more than a minute just to open a terminal in
xwindows and more than 4 minutes to start xwindows. During this time if
I hook it to the network it starts immediately. Any ideas what could be
causing this. During the shutdown process I noticed that it failed to
shutdown httpd. Is it in anyway relevant to the above problem.

And also if you can, please let me know where can I find the
documentation for ezppp set up.

Thanks a lot

There is nothing private about corporate email. You can set some clear
HR policies about what is abusive, etc. examine the mail periodically to
catch the culprit/s and disipline them accordingly. If one of these emails
got delivered into the hands of someone who was offended by it your
company could suffer financial damage for allowing it to occur.

I don't like policies any better than the next person, but abuse is abuse
and every one of your users is paying the price for the abuse of a few.

We find these nudie avi and mov files all the time on our network servers
when people download them to their home directories and share them
around with all their friends via email, etc.

Good luck.

I am having trouble setting up the IPX networking in Mandrake 6.0 kernel

I have actually setup the IPX_configure correctly but when I type
'slist', I get a "no server found in ncp_open" error. What am I doing
wrong?

Thanks!

Two hints. Check /proc/pci for the I/O and IRQ info.

You will also have to add a line in /etc/conf.modules
to load the module (driver) for the NIC.

The line will look something like: alias eth0 xxx.o
where xxx is the module for your card.

Check the manpage for modprobe or depmod

****Newbie Warning!!****
Hi Everyone.
I'm trying to get my Red Hat Linux 5.2 box setup to do IP Masquarding. Have
read and followed HOW-TOs on IP masuq and installing 2 network cards in same
computer. Before I setup the IP Masquarding by following directions in the
miniHOW-TO, both network cards were in and working fine. I could ping and
communicate (http) with clients on both subnets.
Now after I've recompiled the Kernel to add IP masq support and installed
it, I rebooted as per the HOW-TO and my 2nd network card (eth1) is gone!
I've tried everything suggested in the Ethernet HOWTO about using 2 ethernet
cards, but to no avail. Using ifconf eth1 returns "unknown interface".
modprobe eth1 returns "can't locate module eth1".
Both Cards are 3Com 3c509b. eth0 is at 0x300 IRQ 10, eth1 would be at 0x210
IRQ 11.

Any Ideas?

Allan

Short answer! NO! Wine is ok but there are many, many windows apps
that have not been adapted yet. If you really really wanted to have
some dumb terminals running windows apps on a linux box, I think
you'll have to look at VMWare, even though it runs virtual under linux
it can be networked to it as well, that should allow you terminals
access. Only a guess, check with VMWare. O the downside VM really
needs ALL the memory and processor you can afford, and dual CPU's are
even better.

You say you can see your IP address after connect. Does that mean you
have preset the IP address? As in static? If so that may be your
problem almost all ISP's on normal modem accounts are dynamic.

That would appear to explain the connection but packet failure. Your
ISP wouldn't recognize that IP address you set and would send packets
to the IP that it sent you, result...conection, but no communication.

My guess is the tulip driver with RH5.2 doesn't support the newer chip
of the Netgear card.

Search www.deja.com for 'tulip' or Netgear and you will find that tulip
source 'version 90' and above supports your card.

The search will also show where you can get the source.

Subject: Problem to configure the network access
Date: Fri, 09 Jul 1999 13:49:23 GMT

Hello world,

I have a problem to configure routing informations with SuSE Linux 5.3
(kernel 2.0.35). Our network work through a Gateway.

The computer run under Windows 95, with network (maintained with Windows
NT4.0). I want to try Linux. (I don't know why... ;) )

Under Microsoft Windows 95, I have to configure following informations:
IP 149.222.132.130
NetMaplx 255.255.192.0
Gateway 149.222.132.1
DNS1 149.222.129.200
DNS2 149.222.129.201
WINS 149.222.129.201 (for Internet access)
And this works!!!!
========================================================================
But under Linux...

YaST maked the installation, and the configuration of my system:

- I need a module to work with my network card (3Com 3c509).
- I have configured all the stuff
Gateway and Netmask is accessible in the same menu of the IP
configuration. But the "Name server" is the DNS of Windows, and is
reachable from another menu. We cannot configure the WINS under YaST...
And so on, I don't understant all this very painfull configurations
- I started my system, it doesn't work...

So, I spent a lot of time to read the documentation. I have make (for
the second time) the installation. I have edited /etc/rc.config with
YaST, and correct the informations...
It doesn't work.

I have readed, that "route" and "ifconfig" have to maintain the routing
configuration. I have edited /etc/route.conf with the right values, and
ifconfig with the right device... YaST configure a DUMMY device, who
take place of my network card: eth0. I removed the use of this device in
/etc/rc.config, with YaST.
========================================================================
Here is what "route" said:
Name IP Gateway Netmask device
Gateway 149.222.132.1 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 eth0
my_host 149.222.132.130 149.222.132.1 255.255.255.255 eth0
DNS1 149.222.129.200 149.222.132.1 255.255.255.255 eth0
DNS2 149.222.129.201 149.222.132.1 255.255.255.255 eth0
default 0.0.0.0 149.222.132.1 0.0.0.0 eth0
?????? 149.222.128.0 149.222.132.1 255.255.192.0 eth0

It works with this configuration (I have edited the route.conf with the
right values, after testing it with the route command).
=======================================================================
5 Problems:
=====
1-
When I start my computer, all the addresses are configured. But when I
started XF86 (and KDE), the "default" IP entry is automatically removed.
A ping run with all the addresses of my domain (DNS1, DNS2, Gateway),
but I don't have access with Internet anymore.

I need to write the command
"route add -net default gw 149.222.132.1 dev eth0"
after starting KDE

Can I write it in the scripts, to run it automatically? ...

=====
2-
The "dummy" address 149.222.128.0 don't exist in my /etc/route.conf.
But when I start KDE, it automatically appear. I think that KDE use this
address to reach Internet, instead of the WINS 149.222.129.201.

I want to remove it.

=====
3-
I want to update my system to have the new version of route.
I want to use an FTP transfer with ftp.gwdg.de.

To update my system with SuSE Linux 6.1, I need to install a new version
of YaST. I maked it.

To update the base system, I need to run the boot disk. But YaST can't
reach the network alone. It is impossible to write the command "route"
during the installation with a boot disk.

I need also a module to drive my card, witch is not included in my boot
disk.

I try to run the installation of RedHat with network, it doesn't work.
So, it is not only a problem with YaST.

How can I update my base system with an FTP site? (It works for a normal
installation, but not for the base system because I need a boot disk)

=====
4-
I want to access to the Internet with "lynx", because Netscape is too
big. I have to modify /etc/rc.config for it, but how? Now, I have no
access to the Internet with lynx.

=====
5-
I want to access to the local network, witch contains the data and the
printers.

address of the server:
\\fs01\...
address of the printer (postcript)
\\fs01\hp5(stt)

There is also some other color printers, and plotters on this net...
I have to try it with the mount command, but how?
========================================================================
Thank you very much for your help.

Have a lot of Fun.

Romuald.

I too am pretty much in the same mess you are in, with my problems being: 1.
I can connect, but can't surf, I always get "remote host not responding",

plenty of information, but *no* connectivity. I asked my IPS for help, and
they sent me to: http://www.troutman.org/linux/diald.html Back track a
little out there, and you'll find plenty of other simplified "howto"

If your using sendmail you can set the following parameter in the

nowhere to be found. any ideas? i have a couple different RPM's of

Just tell you Linux box to print to a remote Unix system and give it the IP
address of the HP printer. If the printe's IP address is in you host file
or your DNS if you have that available you can use the printers host name
instead of its IP address. It works great.

Look through access.conf and see if there is something you missed
regarding 'Options' or 'AllowOverride' (like maybe AuthConfig).

Given that I haven't used mgetty, it looked like you do on-demand loading
of the kernel PPP support code as a module. The first time it doesn't
get loaded in time so pppd fails, and the second time it hasn't yet been
unloaded so pppd succeeds.

If this is the case then a solution would be to simply insert the PPP
kernel support module with insmod at boot-up in one of the boot files
and leave it there. You may need to add something like "alias ppp.o off"
to /etc/conf.modules to prevent any attempt by kerneld or whatever to
on-demand load it.

I'm not entirely sure about all of this since I've never done on-demand
module loading either. Maybe someone else can confirm this or explain to
both of us what's happening.

See 'man logrotate' and related files in /etc (assuming RedHat). This
typically runs at 4AM every day, but logs can be rotated on a combination
of time and file size. Maybe your logs grow quickly.

Adjust settings to what you want.
