Hi.
I just bought a external 56K modem (USR/3Com 56K Prof. Message modem)
and i also justed updated my RH 5.2 in 6.0. I used to a 28.8K Olitec
which works very well with Linux. Now, i can't connect anymore with my
new modem. I asked the vendor who said it was NOT a winmodem. The modem
composes the number of my ISP correctly, then send "Expect ogin:" then
doesn't go further. Why ?! I tried with netcg, ezppp, kppp, etc., it's
always the same...
Anyone has an idea ?

OK I have done some work with slackware but I have never used modules
before this new redhat setup, and I only tried them to get the kernel
size down. How do I add a module like ip_masq with out going thru
menuconfig, or do I go in and make it modular and do make module and
make module install, with the stock kernel?
thanks for any pointers

I have a set of weird problems as we upgrade our farm to RH 6.0. The
problem mainly appears to be accessing subdirectories that are mount
points. For example, unless I have the /usr partition explicitly
exported, the other machines can't see it (or if they do, a few files
are not seen, etc.) even though I believe the behaviour should be that
if / is exported (as is the case) then everything under it will also
be exported. I am using the 2.2.5-15 kernel provided with 6.0.
Also, when I repeatedly stop and restart NFS (which I used to be able
to do readily), NFS dies and sometimes the machine hangs.
I really dislike the colour "OK" that RedHat does when stopping and
starting processes. It's ugly.

I think you're entitled.
As a last resort you might try the "kdebug 7" option and see what the
data looks like as a hex dump when operating at 115200 for a short time.
In the absence of a solid reason against it I would also try moving the
IRQ for the modem to 4, 5, or 7 and see what happens. You may have to
disable the printer IRQ in the bios to use 7 but a printer interrupt
isn't often used anyway. Somehow IRQ 11 for a modem just doesn't seem
right but that may just be prejudice carried over from my MSDOS daze...
Since things are OK at 57000 I can't say there's much hope that either
can help but what the hey.

Subject: help with NE2000 isa pnp card needed
Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 21:15:11 GMT
HI all:
I have set up RedHat Linux 5.2 with an NE2000 (clone) PnP isa card.
First Linux5.2 did not detect my card, so I ran "isapnp" and "pnpdump".
They went fine, the card was detected, and I was able to ifconfig and
route.
I usually logon and run startx, then work with xterm.
However, I cannot ping to the gateway!!!
Later, I exited the Xwindows, and to my surprise, I got the following
message:
eth0: trigger_send() called with the transmitter busy.
Am I missing something?
What do I do now?

No way.
There is no PPP for AOL. AOL uses a proprietary protocol, so you cannot
use AOL under linux, definitely not. By the way, I worked in network
administration there some time ago. So far, there are no plans to
support linux.
Perhaps, you could use Wine to run your AOL software under X, I don't
know if someone succeeded...
At least, you can check your aol e-mail via a WWW browser (even without
a plugin), and there is Instant Messenger for linux resp. clones of it.

I have several questions:
1. Is there any way to export a raw device such as a serial
port or raw disk partition to another client on another machine?
The IOCTLs could be done locally.... If it were a disk, I would
need random access (i.e., a simple rsh would not work)....
2. Is there a file system for Linux that supports > 2GB files?
Possibly
UFS (I can read and write, but can't format UFS), or XFS (from
SGI?)?
3. Any tools for formatting UFS?
4. Any news on XFS from SGI -- I have not heard anything nor seen
anything
since Linux Expo....
Please respond via e-mail....
Thanks,

In the USA, cases have been decided that determined employees who use
corporate e-mail systems to send private messages have no expectation of
privacy, especially if the company has a written policy that states that
fact. It's Federal law, which means States can only make it stronger, but
not weaken it.

When you say you have tried switches, does this also mean KVMs? (Keyboard,

A nic cannot be setup to use both DHCP and a static address
at the same time. You say you've setup linux as a server. A
server for what? An internal lan? If so you'll need a second
nic for the server to use on the lan, which you can
configure with a static IP. You can even make it a DHCP
server itself for the pupose of assigning IP addresses to
your lan client machines. You would also need to enable IP
routing in netcfg. By running squid on the server your lan
client boxes would be able to share your cable modem. I hope
this answer pertains to your problem.

With all due respect, no, Americans don't consider people invading, and running
around with guns to be an act of war. Just look at Vietnam. We Americans are
more than willing to argue over the legal definition of what exactly is is, so
quite frankly, I don't think that we require any particular military action
before we declare war with any consistency.

Jerry, at least on RH6.0 all necessary modules etc are done. so the
following should work for you (minimal setup, you can tweak after it
is running <G>)
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
insmod ip_masq_ftp
that should do it. If it works then merely add those lines into your
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file

OK, I'm at my wit's end. I've been trying to get nfs working on Redhat
6.0 for a
couple of weeks now and I'm getting ever more angry/confused.
I basically have 2 machines, both redhat 6. As far as I can tell, all of
the
relevant files are set up properly (they're included below) and all
machines
have been rebooted.
When I start up nfs I get the following errors in /var/log/messages:
exportfs: joriki.maru.org.uk:/: Function not implemented
rpc.nfsd: nfssvc: Function not implemented
and when I attempt to mount a drive I get the following:
mountd[1130]: refused mount request from joriki.maru.org.uk: no export
entry
in var/log/messages and
mount: hara:/ failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
Can anybody point me in the right direction
TIA

Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 20:23:58 -0400
I'm setting up ppp access for office email (about time, Win95 has been
blowing up too frequently and too thoroughly to be of any further use to
us). A problem: the ppp-go command works for root, but not for users.
I've fiddled with chmod, but apparently not well enough. What would I
need to do -- and to which files -- in order to get our users to type
'ppp-go' from the command prompt and get the modem up and running the way
it automatically does when I log on as root? And, by the way, I need to
solve this for 'ppp-off' as well.
I'm running Linux 2.0.35, installed with Slackware 3.6, using a CHAP
script to connect to AT&T Worldnet service. The ppp-go script was
generated automatically by running pppsetup and providing the information
requested. If you need to know more details than this, let me know.

a hapless newbie sysop, Go World Inc.

Paul Anderson is right about ICQ having many security holes in it, and ICQ
does not support secure transmition. I know of a non IQC compatible clone
(if that makes sense) called Teaser. The client is called Firecat. I dont
know the URL so do a search on Freshmeat.
