If the AS400 is a RISC model (black box) and has a reasonably current
operating system, you will have no problem integrating it into an IP
environment - in fact, it can make quite a nice DNS, DHCP, Web or mail
server. If it is a CISC model (white box), it will do IP well but will not
be much use for any other IP server functions.

I have a mixed network - 4 AS400's, multiple Novell servers, OS2 server,
OS2 gateway. I am presently adding a Linux DNS and gateway to the mix.

What are you using the AS400 for? What model is it? What OS400 level is on
it?

Ultimately packets have to resolve to a physical device to be transmitted
and received.  It looks like Linux doesn't know what physical device to
route to and from.  Try

route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0
route add -host 192.168.0.3

Then type "route" (for me /sbin/route) and you should get something like
this:

[root@roland network-scripts]# /sbin/route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags     Metric    Ref
Use   Iface
192.168.0.0       *            255.255.255.0          U            0
0      21    eth0
127.0.0.0          *             255.0.0.0                 U            0
0       3     lo

If you don't get something like this then you can be sure Linux doesn't know
how to route to your ethernet interface.  Good luck.

Of course.

/usr/bin/netscape is just a wrapper that calls the real program. Back it
up (just in case) and insert the line

/etc/ppp/ppp-on

at the beginning of /usr/bin/netscape, just after
!#/bin/sh

(Assuming, of course, that you use ppp-on to dial.)

Hi folks,

I think I have a problem with a HP LJ 4000 (Postscript, Duplex). I use
SuSE 6 and kernel 2.2.9 and when I install the printer as a postscript
1200dpi printer under yast, it seems to work quite fine, but if I try to
print something out it does not print the very last page.

If I print only one page it shows (in German: "BEREIT" (READY/ONLINE)
changing with the message "DATEN EMPFANGEN" (GOT ALL THE DATA YOU WANTED
ME TO RECEIVE)) and 2 of the 3 LED are turned on (Ready and Data). If
you want to receive a page now, you have to print an empty page (or
sometimes even two). I called HP, but they dont have a clue about linux,
they just said press the START-button (is it windows???) then everything
should be perfectly ok.

Of course nothing was ok, it doesnt work that way. So, what is wrong
here? I checked both the computers setup (par. port is /dev/lp0) and
then printers setup, both seem ok.

Finally, if you try to print via samba, it works fine, due to
unforeseeable reasons.

HELP!

With Apache you can use the mod_proxy with the ProxyPass command to make the
WinNT server appear to be in a subdirectory on the Linux server.  For example:

ProxyPass  /mirror/foo  http://foo.com

When the user accesses the file "http://www.server.com/mirror/foo/bar/junk.asp"
they will get the file "http://foo.com/bar/junk.asp".

I am running Red Hat 6.0, 2.2.5, and I have been trying to get my second
ethernet card up so I can use IP MASQ.

I have a 3c905 for the eth0, which works fine, and is connected to the
cable modem.

But the non-working one is a 3c509, and PnP is turned off!  I have tried
used the "append" thing in the lilo.config file I have tried playing
around with "linuxconf"  but when I boot the machine it says that it is
delaying eth1, and there is a "FAILED" in red next to it, when all the
others are "OK".  Any help would be greatly appericated.  I am sorry if
I missed anything, I am kinda new to this.  Thanks again.

Hi,

I'm having trouble configuring an ftp server with SlackWare 4.0
(2.2.10 kernel). I was using this configuration with a previous
install of slackware, and it worked.  It sorta of works with my
current install. The only problem is users can't create directories.
They get a 550: Permission Denied (Upload Dirs) error.

My Goals

- Give FTP Access to users without allowing them to telnet.
- Allow FTP users to upload to /home/ftp/incoming directory.
- Force users to create a directory to upload files.
- chroot ftp users to /home/ftp but not real users.

Here's what I did, and why. Hopefully someone can help me figure out
the problem.

Edited /etc/shells and added /etc/ftponly entry for ftp user's shell
to prevent them from access account with telnet.

Created /etc/ftponly file with following entry. Not really needed but
what the hell :) It simply displays a message when someone tries to
telnet into the box with an ftp account.

# /etc/ftponly
# ftponly shell
echo " "
echo " "
echo "Access Denied!"
echo " "
echo "Updating Log with Connection Source..."
exit 0

Edited /etc/group and added following entry
ftpers::50:

Created a test ftp account in /etc/passwd
test:9efSXXT1EYmxI:500:50::/home/ftp/./:/etc/ftponly

chown root.ftpers /home/ftp/incoming
chmod 777 /home/ftp.incoming

Edited /ftpaccess and made the following changes

class     remote  real,guest my.ip.went.here *
upload  /home/ftp/incoming/*     yes     root    ftpers  0777 dirs
guestusers ftpers

The * after incoming is supposed to prevent users from uploading to
the root of incoming. At least it did on my previous install. If I
remove it, users can upload files to incoming, and create directories.
However, they cannot upload into directories that they created. I
think this is related to my problem.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Just got RedHat 6.0 up and running, it works fine but i can't figure
out how to set up my cable modem so i can get on the net.

We are behind a firewall because the lack of real IP addresses.

This is how the setup looks and works in Windows 95/98.
Hardware:
The modem is connected to the computer via a generic PCI ethernetcard.

Software:
TCP/IP settings: DNS Inactivated, No Gateway, Get IP Address from
server,  i also got Microsoft Proxy client installed. 

Someone who knows how to make a setup like this work in Linux ?
My ISP knows ?, my isp doesn't know what ICQ is...

If you can resolve as root, but not as a regular user, that sounds like
a permissions issue.  Try taking a look at the permissions on
/etc/resolv.conf and insure they're something like 644.

I recently installed a Netgear FA310tx in a RH6.0 machine. 
It works like a champ but I used the drivers that came with
the card.  They were more recent than the native drivers.

What precisely are you trying to do?  Run software on your
Linux boxes, that use the Sun X-Terminals as the display/
keyboard/mouse?  You should be able to call up 'telnet'
on the X terminal, and then run the application (e.g.,
Netscape) with the display as an argument (e.g.,
`netscape -display xterminal03:0`)

I can't say why it works for me, I don't know of anything I've 
done out of the ordinary.  Seems like I may have run modprobe 
and/or maybe insmod.  

I have 2 of the things in my stock RH5.2 system using the stock 
Tulip v0.89H modules.  No compiling, nothing.  I'm kind of 
peculiar that way, I like to keep things as stock as possible.

My system here at home is a HP Pavilion 6355 - 333 Celeron w/ 
onboard video and sound.

conf.modules contains  (pertaining to ethernet)
alias eth1 tulip
alias eth0 tulip

eth0 loads at 0xd000 IRQ3
eth1 loads at 0xd800 IRQ11

Now, when I got my cable modem, I thought why waste a 10/100 card 
on a 10BaseT link.  I couldn't get a Linksys 10BaseT card to co-
exist with the 10/100, fought that for a week and gave up, wasted 
a week for $5.  Threw in a second 10/100 and it flew the first 
time.

I don't have a gateway machine or a Cisco router, and I'm
trying to make a telnettable Linux box --- I thought this
would be easy!!!

With others like a Win98 machine, NeXT machine, Sun
workstation, SGI Indy, or Macintosh, I can pretty much set the
IP address to 200.0.0.5 (or whatever) and the netmask to
255.255.255.0, then connect it (via a hub) to another
200.0.0.x machine, and I've then been able to "telnet
200.0.0.5" (well, not Win98 or Mac) or "ftp 200.0.0.5"
(well...)

ANYWAY

the Linux machine keeps asking for GATEWAY numbers and such,
and I can't figure out how to fake it out --- 
and it refuses to sit there and pretend that it's 200.0.0.5
so I can ftp to it from another machine!

I'm sure this is a pretty dumb question, but please answer it
anyway!!!  Email or post, I just want to ftp into my Linux
box!  (Redhat 5.2)

Can anyone recommend good reading (O'Reilly titles,
URLs, whatnot) with respect to tweaking Linux for
performance?  I've been a systems administrator for
4 years now, and I think I've performed ably.  
My boxes don't crash, are always available, and
are hacker-resistant.  =)  

But now I'm being called upon to provide "enterprise-
class" performance out of Linux machines, in general
and in specific circumstances (e.g., tweaking the
kernel to provide specialized performance gains in
areas such as file I/O).  

Where might I begin to fill my brain with such information?
I'm not a coder, but I know how to code when necessary.
(No, not `./configure ; make ; make install` - when I
need something done and I can't find software to do it,
I write it.  However, it's not always the best optimized
or the prettiest code you've ever seen ;)

For example, say you were on the team responsible for
tweaking a Linux box to go head-to-head against
an NT server for a rematch of the Mindcraft benchmarks.
Where might you turn for tips/tricks/advice?
