Subject: Mgetty and AutoPPP
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 12:11:06 +0100

Hi,
I'm attempting to set up a Redhat 6.0 box as a dial-in server and have
followed the HOWTOs and got mgetty answering the phone. However, when I
use Win95 to dial in the line is dropped with the message 'You have been
disconnected, please double-click the connection to try again'

So, I created a user called ppp1 and med their shell pppd and tried that
- it still dropped the line.

I tried dialing in with hyperterm and got a standard shell login for my
normal accout and an error regarding .ppprc for the pppd account.

I've attached the mgetty log for the standard account to the end of this
post .

I thought that AutoPPP was supposed to kick in and do pap and ppp on the
normal account. Is it?

I havn't re-compiled mgetty, I'm using the one taht came with Redhat 6,
is that OK or should I re-compile.

I've created a .ppprc file in the home directory of the pppd user and
put
-detach
in it. Is that OK?

Also what IP address will be given to the incoming connection? Does it
just use the DHCP server to get it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email replies to me as
well as posting them as my access to newsgroups is limited.

My address is steve_AT_mirkwood_DOT_clara_DOT_net

Hi,

I've tried everything by now, including following the instructions on

   http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/
   and
   http://home.talkcity.com/MigrationPath/maguai/

And most every possible configuration setting in smb.conf.

Whatever I do, I can make my Linux machine show up in the workgroup, but
when I try to open it I get:

   Added interface ip=194.7.x.x bcast=194.7.x.x nmask=255.255.255.0
   session request to 194.7.x.x failed
   session request to *SMBSERVER failed

A windows machine just tells me that the server didn't recieve my request.

The smb.log says this:

   [1999/07/14 13:07:03, 0] locking/shmem.c:smb_shm_open(930)
ERROR smb_shm_open : mmap failed with code Invalid argument
   [1999/07/14 13:07:03, 0] locking/locking.c:locking_init(169)
ERROR: Failed to initialise share modes!

Any ideas? why the "mmap failed with code Invalid argument"?

Thanks,
Manfred

The short answer is, no these are not supported.

The longer answer is that they could be supported armed with the
proper V90 knowledge and programming specs. A few folks who might have
been in a position to write a driver have asked for programming
information and so far exactly 0 manufacturers have supplied any. 99%
of people no longer bother asking. (winmodems get the host CPU to do a
lot of the work, which is undesirable in many cases anyway).

I use an external 56K modem connected by a serial line. This ensures I
get a complete modem and the AT comands, etc are implemented by the
modem.

Typically one would place both the database and web server in the
DMZ. One would make sure the database had no information people should
not be reading in it, of course. IF that means a seperate internal database
server then that is what you pay for the security.

>My reasoning on the three network system is that there is no way for

You probably need some minimal access from the internal network to the DMZ
machines and vica-versa. In particular you need to pass email... the usual
solution is allowing port 25 for one pair of boxen and have the internal
mail handling box fortified like the stuff in the DMZ (modulo what services
it needs to provide).

Admin acess is well served by ssh. The policy with servers is usually
shell access is only by ssh and limited to a minimal numner of
users. You can insist on specific host public keys too, which
obviosuly helps. Not networked logging host over serial lines for
critical servers are also popular---these are logs no cracker without
physical access can erase and twidling the time on networked machines
will have no effect. (You use these logs when disaster strikes).

[Typically you want some sort of simple summary logs regularly landing
in your mailbox as well.]

sendmail has a parameter that you can set to put a maximum size per
mail. This should help stop massive avi files and 100Mb emails (which
can make small mail servers *very* unstable). One server I know crashed
badly when procmail used all the real memory+swap space failing to
deliver it (to add insult to injury rebooting caused another delivery
attempt with the same result). The content of the mail suggest it was
not malicious but some uncool M$ software bug.

I had a question, does Roadrunner offer static IP's? And with Roadrunner,
do you have to masquerade or can you use more than one IP at a time?

Yes, but it's also above the 20Mbps claimed as the maximum throughput
under ideal conditions -- and my system isn't exactly operating under
ideal conditions, since it uses a hub (hence half duplex and more
collisions).

You have to make sure that the .rhosts file is mode 600 for security
reasons.

Used mainly with the ppp or slip connection. But I checked that if it is

Even without the dummy device, I get the same problems with my

I was wondering if Sendmail or other package supports user AUTHENTICATION
for sending e-mail. I'm not taking about POP3 or IMAP but about SMTP
authentication.

This feature would fix a lots of problems regarding unauthorized RELAY: so
if you want to send an e-mail using that server you should be first
AUTHENTICATE.

Well, from the looks of it you have the connection correct since you can see
data. If the ctl Y doesn't work it is most likely due to minicom screwing that
up. I would suggest using cu instead. man cu will give you the details. I use
this to access cisco routers all the time.

Had the same problem. After the machine comes up, run a term, then su - and
type in dhcpcd and see if you get a lease. If so, then you need to add dhcpcd
to your init.rc files.

Subject: Sendmail relay-not a regular relay
Date: 14 Jul 1999 14:31:05 GMT

Hi,
Some people might say that is stupid what I want but this I know what i'm
taking about:

I have sendmail 8.9.3 and I want all clients originating from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to relay to any host that they want.

Let me explain why I need this configuration:
I have some clients that are travelling a lot and are conecting to
Internet using diferrent ISPs- all of them wants to use their "home" e-
mail server to send e-mails, so as long as the "from" fiels is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] they should relay to everyone.
I take the risk of exposing my mail server to spmmers...I know that..but I
don't have what to do:(

try giving the 'exec' option when mounting! Just where you'd
give the rsize etc options, where in /etc/fstab you often find
'defaults'.

Subject: Samba needs password for $IPC

Does anyone have any idea of why my linux box running samba is asking
for a password for service $IPC? I was using my own custom
configuration and this was happening, and then I tried using the
smb.conf from /usr/doc/samba/simple and I still have the same error.

I am using RH6.0. When I had RH5.2 I was able to get samba running with
no problem.

Thanks (&please CC: my email address),
Dan
