Hiya,

after getting run my token ring 16/4 card I, i ran into trouble when i
tried to get into the net. I have Debian Slink 2.1 with kernel 2.2.4
running.

ifconfig tr0 up (or even ifconfig tr0 <ip> up) works fine, it gives me:
tr0: Initial interrupt : 16 Mbps, shared RAM base 000c8000.
tr0: Adapter initialized and opened.

ifconfig gives me:

route gives me:

however, if i ping 9.39.128.1 [2,3] i get:
ping: sendto: Operation not permitted

but if ill do arp -a i get this:

The MAC-Addresses for all 4 ip's are right (checked it with my workin'
W95-thinkpad), so it seems there is a connection. but i cant ping,
telnet or do anything else.
Yes, iam root on that machine. But i never done Networks before and i
dont know what i need to do.

Iam thankful for every hint ill get...

Subject: remote network help
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 16:17:46 GMT

Good day.

I've been assigned the task of setting up a network in which off-site
users of a document processing package access a server containing the
document repository, admin, and communication functions residing on a
WinNT server. The way I *think* I should set the server side up is to
have the users (no more than 10 users), log on over the internet to a
Linux gateway which will authenticate and pass them through to the
WindowsNT server.

The linux, running RedHat 5.2, is connected to the internet by 2-way
cable modem. It has a "semi"-static IP address. Using IP Masquerading I
can get to the internet from NT through Linux. I have installed Apache
on the linux, and it is running but I'm still trying to figure out how to
configure it properly (RedHat spread the installation all over the place,
and I'm struggling with the settings in the various .conf files to
identify the location of logs, documents, etc. and which applies to what.
Is there a reason the Apache setup can't just place everything in a
central Apache set of subdirectories?)

How does linux pass valid users through to NT? Does Apache handle it?
Do I even need Apache for this? I have tried to ping the linux IP
address from outside and get no response back. I can ping out with no
problem from linux and NT.

Would my IP Masquerade settings keep me from pinging in from the outside?
What IP Masquerading rules would I need to accomplish my task?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, i have a cable modem thet works great in Windows, but in linux it
doesnt..

My linuxbox runs Redhat 6.0, with a PCI-NE2000 ethernet card connected to
the cable modem,
The kernel detects the card fine. When i configure the NIC with DHCP from my
ISP it works great for about 30 seconds, then it seems like the network just
dissapears..
When this happens i cannot start X.. i have to 'ifdown eth0' first...

Anyone know whats happening?
Could it be problem with the hardware?

Derek --

Thanks for your input. I have tried your suggestions, but I am afraid
they didn't work.

the file /etc/conf.modules on both the working and the non-working
machines are identical. Currently they contain:

alias eth0 eepro100
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x240

The modules eepro100.o and ne.0 both are in the directory
/lib/modules/preferred/net.

When I executed the "/sbin/modprobe eth0" command, the response was:

conf:3: missing module arguement

When I did the init 1 and init 3 it still reported delaying eth0 (and
eth1) initialization.

I also tried a more specific /etc/conf.modules of:

alias eth0 eepro100
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x240 irq=3
options eepro100 io=0xe800 irq=10

No success but more information. The following is from the same area of
the startup as before:

Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET 3.035
insmod: /lib/modules/preferred/net/eepro100.o symbol for parameter io
not found
loading device 'eth0'...
ne.c:V1.10 9/23/94 Donald Becker ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
ne*000 ethercard probe at 0x240 00 40 05 6d 9f 00
eth0: ne2000 found at 0x240 using IRQ3
loading device 'eth1'...
delaying eth1 initialization

Now my analysis would be that it could not start the Intel on-board chip
with the eepro100 driver on eth0. Then it successfully started the
linksys isa card and called it eth0. Does that make sense?

Any other suggestions?

Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 18:13:14 GMT

For many moons now, I've combed through the how-tos. I've combed
through the linux-tech discussion group, I've looked at admin manuals...

Nothing so far has been written on how to configure a Linux box as a
simple ISP.

I haven't even been able to get PPP to work! Maybe it's because I'm
using Caldera, I don't know. But, I'd like to find some docs that are
more detailed technically. I need to set up an ISP-'like' server in
our company to provide internet connections to some employees.

I want them to use PPP when they dial up, I want them to be able to
access our T1 to the internet through the box...standard ISP stuff
including web space for the intranet.

Can anyone provide any guidance?

Thanks

You need to setup your Windows NT based DNS server to forward name
resolution requests to WINS server. You can do it via DNS Administrator.

Good luck!

Yes. Both route and netstat -r attempt to do reverse DNS.
Perhaps your /etc/revolv.conf is not set up correctly. Or
you are not actually connected.

Use either "route -n" or "netstat -rn". These will give you
the IP addresses rather than the host names.

Just to finish with this messages I did at conf.modules:

alias ppp-compress-21 off
alias ppp-compress-24 off
alias ppp-compress-26 off

Pls, do not consider this as fix but just one bypass.

Okay, I'm probably going to get a lot wrong here, but I may have a few
answers, and I definitely have some questions along the way :)

>modprobe: can't locate module eth1
>Delaying eth1 initialization

First problem to deal with is that the /etc/conf.modules file contains a
line like "alias eth1 xxxxx[.o]"

xxxxx.o needs to be in /lib/modules/linux2.0.34 and it's apparently not.
Copy it over from your working machine or check for a typo in the line.

To get your cards working try this:

modprobe eth0
modprobe eth1
init 1
init 3

I don't know why that should work. I wish it didn't, but it did just today.
For me anyway. Which leads to my first question.

I have built a box for my office so that we can all access the internet from
our desktops without using up our preciously small C-class address range. I
compiled a 2.2.10 kernel with IP masquerading enabled (I assume this was
necessary; I certainly couldn't get IP masquerading to work under the RedHat
2.0.36 kernel), and fitted the machine with two ethernet cards. One of the
cards is hooked up to a router, the other to a hub on our office network.
By using the Linux box as the default gateway all our machines can see the
Internet, but only the Linux box (which acts as our web and mail server) can
be seen from the Internet. Or at least I hope so.

Anyway, the whole thing works beautifully, and I get a warm glowwy feeling
whenever someone uses the web or email (it took me two weeks to get it
going, and that was on Monday :) ), except that neither of the ethernet
cards are enabled when the system is started up. I have to go through that
whole modprobe/init crap to get them to appear.

As I understand it, by invoking modprobe manually I force the kernel to load
the drivers and then with the init 1/init 5 I restart the networking, with
both cards' drivers loaded. I could probably kludge this at startup by
utilising an extra run-level and an appropriate script in the relevant rcX.d
directory, but I'd kind of like to know how to do it properly :)

Sorry for the long-windedness. All advice appreciated.

TIA

Attached is my file on ifconfig and route.
I changed the NIC on the Win95 box, to no avail, even interchanged the
cables, and using a new one! Even used an old hard disk with 2.0.36
installed (RedHat) which I know is working 'cause I use it at my
college: identical problems, so it is not the kernel version or
configuration which are incorrect.

>From what I see, (tcpdump) there seems to be a response from Win95 box
which is accepted by my Linux box (confirmed by the arp entry), a
response from my Linux Box to the Win95 box, which does not seem to be
accepted by the Win95 Box.
Really strange.

Technically ipfwadm no longer exists with the new distributions based
on 2.2.x; it has been replaced with ipchains and the ipfwadm-wrapper
is only a script designed to more or less emulate the old ipfwadm by
running ipchains (with a few caveats and limitations). You will
eventually want to learn ipchains.

Setting up a PPP server is covered in the PPP-HOWTO, section 26.

http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO-26.html

This does not cover how to set up your modem to answer. You'll
need to use mgetty for this. I set this up once and I thought
I found the info in a howto, but I can't find it now.

"man mgetty" should get you started, though.
