Subject: LogFormat Error when starting APACHE
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 09:10:38 -0500

I am running RED HAT 5.2 on an old Pentium 60 (hey it was free:-) and
installed the APACHE RPMs. I opened COMANCHE and typed in my computer's
name as the ServerName. I saved the configuration and then exited. I
then tried starting APACHE. I got the following Error Message:

Syntax error on line 159 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
LogFormat takes 1-2 arguments, a log format string (see docs) and an
optional format name

I printed out my "/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf" File before making the
above change in COMANCHE, and line 159 was unchanged. It reads:

LogFormat "%h %l %u %t \"%r %>s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\""
combined

I would appreciate any help with this problem. Like what does this
error mean and how do I fix it? TIA

Daniel

I've got 2 nics, with different IRQs and Base
Addresses, in a machine running 2.2.5.
The nics are detected and valid in the ifconfig.
lilo.conf does have: append = "ether=0,0,eth0
ether=0,0,eth1"

Problem is this: After a single night's work, the
there are more dropped packets (by a couple orders
of magnitude) than sent, and furthermore there are
more than 600,000,000 errors.

I've exhausted all of my friends' knowledge.

Any Ideas?

hihi.

Um...me have similar problem too I think...I dunno what's wrong with it,
however, there is this module called ip_masq_icq.o (can be found in
freshmeat) which solves this problem I think.

I've installed it, but have not really tested it yet. :P
Sorry, not sure about IPhone.

Chances are the other machines are useing WINS, not DNS for name

You need Socks proxy aware telnet and ftp clients. Ick.

I think this would be a return issue. See what the server is filtering.
I bet nslookup won't work on any system inside.

If DNS is having trouble, it will hose your whole system. See about

actually has an easy setup, so your admin may do it.

Samba allows WINS and Domain intergration. You should install it. The
toughest thing about Windows networking is nameing issues, and WINS solves
that.

There are two aspects of what you've just described:

1) IP masquerading. You can set up the Linux box to send traffic from your
local network out over your PPP link [I assume that's what you're
using] and make it look as if it's coming from the Linux box. For this
you need certain kernel features (I don't know offhand if they're
compiled into the standard Red Hat kernel) and the ipchains utility.
There's a HOWTO on this topic.
2) Dial-on-demand. What you've described involves having the system dial
the modem automatically whenever it detects outgoing network traffic.
This is handled through the diald daemon, IIRC. Personally, I don't
   use this, but others do.

Subject: telnet permissions
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 14:53:30 GMT

Hi all. Got a question about Linux permissions. I fired up inetd to
spawn the telnet daemon. Now I need to know how to log in.

I have several accounts set up on the Linux box. I am trying to telnet
in from a NT box (my laptop). I log into NT using NTuser/NTpass, and
then I try to telent to the Linux system. If I try to log in as root
through telnet I get 'Login Incorrect' even though I am supplying the
proper root password. If I log in using NTuser/NTpass (I have set up a
corresponding account on the Linux side), then it works.

Even if I telnet to localhost from the Linux box and try to log in as
root (when I'm already loged in as root to start the telnet session in
the first place), it says 'Login Incorrect'

I'm confused. Why will it not let me in, even though I know the root
password?

I apreciate all help in advance :)

Cheers,

Dave Haas

It is running kernel 2.2.6 and I am loading the ibmtr.o module during

When it tries to initialise the TR card it gives the error

It is an IBM Auto Wake Token Ring card (ISA).

Can anyone help?

knfsd has nothing to do with kernel. Messing with kernel will
lets you mount/umont nfs drive.

The problem here is *exporting* nfs from red hat 6.0. Big difference!
You can have kernel which does not understand nfs drive and still export
nfs. That was how
I had my server with rh5.2 kernel 2.2.8 running.

red hat 6.0 is apparently broken. I have tried exporting with stock
2.2.5 kernel and then 2.2.10 and still broken. Notice that I have
the same setup as before where I was running rh5.2 and ker 2.2.8. I was
happily exporting nfs until I upgraded to rh6.0

Running '/usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd' gives 'nfssvc not implemented error'.
That seems to be the problem.

Does any one know how to downgrade from red hat 6.0 to 5.2?

I wish to add some new function and remove some of the unneeded stuff from
the lunix com stack. The roblem is that I have no idea where to start. I
have entered many IRC chats on the subject and get told "Go to the source!"

Well the source is a bit too OTT for me at the moment and I want to gently
accustome myself to it.

The question is.

Where can I get information about the structure of the linux comstack? Some
simple stuff at first and perhaps a few whitepapers or development docs. I
will contact the writer of the stack as a last
move.

Thanks...

Last time I posted this i was told that the development was undocumentated.
I believe that for anything as sucessfull a linux must have some recording
process behind it to let all the developers work togeather.

configure the card I attempt to ping another workstation on the LAN and
_exactly_ one packet will be received. I am confused. Ideas anyone?

Does the Cisco 675 support the full cisco IOS? If it does I would definatly

Can you show the output of "route" after the second command? Usually the
"not reachable" message is refering to the fact that you have named a
gateway where no direct route exists (which should be set with the second
command... at least you should get there an error message, too...

That's a feature =) Logging in as root over telnet (nont encrypted
communication) is considered a bad idea, so it is disabled. However, if
you are not concerned, look at man securetty (/etc/securetty).

As a security precaution, logging in as root via telnet is normally
disabled (I think you can change it to permit root logins, but
*don't*). Login as your user account via telnet, and then use

someone@somewhere:~> su -
Password:[put your root password here]

which will make you root on the remote box.
