you can use the *defaultroute* option from pppd or a script named
"ip-up"
to do what you want. the script will be executed from pppd when the link
comes up,
where param #5 contain the remote ip-address (see pppd man pages):
----
#!/bin/bash
# File: /etc/ppp/ip-up
/sbin/route add default gw $5
----
you can also add some ipfwadm-statements here to configure your
ip-masquerading.
to do some things after a link comes down use a script called
"ip-down"...

i have linux redhat 6.2. what i want to do is not
just cluster 2 machines, but actually make it so
that data will replicate to both machines, so if
one machine crashes the other will pick up the
load and continue working. This would come in
handy for a databse server or webserver.

Yes NetGear cards are supported. When you compile a kernel just choose
the Dec Tulip 21140. I have one in my Debian 2.1 system right now.

Try 2.3.5 (which should be on your CDROM set, anyways).

It's a daemon.
I think I've fixed my problem though. I hooked up a Win95 client, and
as long as the Win98 machines didn't make a request to the server,
everything was smooth. So.... I took the plunge and upgraded to 2.0.3.
Everything works great now. No problems at all (except my
stupid mistakes in smb.conf that caused everything to be non-writable).
I'm really happy this worked out, I was starting to wonder if maybe
linux wasn't the way to go for a new file server.
Thanks,

Kevin,
I am wondering if you even have ipchains installed. You are talking
about compiling in kernel support, but have never mentioned the
userspace tools which actually run it. Here is the website of the
person that is supporting it. There is a maillist and everything
available. I added ipchains to my RH5.2 distribution with a new kernel,
but RH6.0 comes with it already installed. The only thing you have to
go get is ipmasqadm, but that is just an rpm.
ipchains:
http://www.rustcorp.com/linux/ipchains/
ipmasqadm:
http://juanjox.kernelnotes.org/
good luck. They are great once you have them running. Shouldn't be
terrible to install since even I could handle it. Fortunately the
newest HOWTO has pretty current information (unlike when ipchains was
first released <G>).

Hello,
I'm still not able to ping between win98 and linux (after reading
NET3-HOWTO, SAMBA-HOWTO, and
lots of mailing in this newsgroup). I use alsways the IP addresses, so no
problems with
hostnames can occur. When I ping from WIN98 to LINUX, I get a time out.
When I ping from LINUX to WIN98, I aways get something with 56 databytes,
and then nothing.
I am able to ping my localhost and eth0 within linux.
I am also able to ping the win98 IP starting from win98.
I also adapted the encrypted password problem.
I also adapted the most important files in the /etc/... directory which are
described in NET3-howto.
I am getting pretty desperate. Can somebody send me an example of the most
simple win98-linux network configuration settings (I mean settings in
/etc/... files, and settings on the win98 side like properties
of networkcards, tcp/ip settings) that works, I mean where at least I can
ping between win98 and linux.
Thanks in advance.
(I want linux to be server for win98.)
!!!!!Some concrete questions!!!!
1) suppose, I only want to ping from win98 to linux or vica versa:
> do I need samba for this ??? (on linux)
> do I need DNS for this ??? (on win98)
> do I need to mark the box for filesharing (on win98) for this??
> do I need to logon into the winNT domain (this looks obvious yes,
but you never know)???
I already tried out all the possible combinations, and nothing seems to
work/ping
Help, my holidays get messed up a little bit .

I have set-up a Web proxy server on Linux (squid) and am using our ISP DNS
servers to resolve Internet addresses. We have a dial-on-demand ISDN router
for our company.
In /etc/resolve.conf I have put the name of the DNS servers in e.g
nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 5.6.7.8
I don't have a DNS server running, although I did try a caching DNS server.
Everything works ok except for one thing.
The linux box keeps building an ISDN connection about every 4 minutes, even
though no internet connection are being made.
1) Is there something I'm missing, some setting I need to change etc.
2) Can this system work in this way I have set-up with the hardware we have.
Basically I want to reduce phone connection costs, improve bandwidth
performance and for monitoring web site usage.
Thanks in advance for any help given.

I just installed Redhat Linux 6. I chose their workstation class

could ftp files directly from the Win9x cdrom drive (These are two seperate

ftp from the run window in win95 it states that it is connecting but I get
no request for a login or password and after a few seconds it gives a quick

Subject: Transparent printing thru telnet?
Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 07:35:01 GMT
Hello.
I have been able to make transparent printing work thru xterm/telnet as
follows:
The client machine is RH6.0 with X windows. A dot matrix printer is attached
to this machine and defined in lpd. I login to another machine (SCO Unix) on
the local ethernet using the command: xterm -xrm '*printerAutoClose:true' -e
telnet scoboxname Now whenever the sco application running in telnet sends
media copy (mc) esc seq, it prints fine.
Here is the question: How do we make the transparent printing work on linux
machine where X is not installed? Any ideas?
It seems printing is working due to xterm and not telnet. Is there a telnet
work-alike with this feature?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: request for help w/TCP analysis app
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 16:56:32 -0500
Hi. Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question,
but I need some pointers from the Linux community in order to convince
management here to go with a Linux solution in place of Windows NT.
I'm trying to write a network analysis application, which opens an IPv4
TCP connection to a cooperating host, sends and receives large amounts
of
data, and then analyzes the connection behavior for throughput,
retransmission and window size statistics, etc. In addition, the
throughput must be throttled, if necessary, to avoid exceeding some
pre-defined threshold (for instance, T1 speed). Throughput is readily
measured at the socket, but I need access to either the raw packet
contents or else internal protocol stack information to analyze items
such as retransmissions. Questions:
1. Does anyone know of any tools (preferably ones with source code
available) which perform similar types of analysis on Linux? (I'm
aware of HP's netperf.)
2. Does anyone know how to probe inside a socket (eg with getsockopt())
to determine TCP information (such as retransmissions) for a given
connection? Looking at the 2.2.10 kernel, it looks like a simple hack
to net/ipv4/tcp.c:tcp_getsockopt() along the lines of:
switch(optname) {
case TCP_MAXSEG:
val = tp->user_mss;
break;
/* begin hack */
case TCP_RETRANSMISSIONS: /* some suitable define for this */
val = tp->retrans_out;
break;
/* end hack */
...
will furnish the retransmission count. This assumes that the
retrans_out value in the tcp_opt structure given by
sk->tp_pinfo.af_tcp
is actually the number of retransmissions. Can someone knowledgeable
comment on the validity of this approach?
3. Is there a kernel mechanism for throttling a TCP connection so that
it
does not exceed a specified throughput rate? (The application can
attempt this by judicious sleeps between send()s, but internal buffering
in the TCP/IP stack can interfere with this.)
Please send any replies to [EMAIL PROTECTED], as I normally do not read
this newsgroup. Thanks in advance for any and all help!
