Use IPChains with RH6.x and ipfwadm with RH 5.x.

The hardware compatibility list I saw said that the 3C905 is supported, but not
the 3C905B. I wound up getting the 3C509B and it works fine. You might check
around and see if this has changed though, maybe there's a driver available for
it now.

Actaully, I am running Slackware Linux, with glibc library on all the
PCs. So, I have /etc/host.conf file rather than /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
I checked it and it is like this (just the 2 lines):

order hosts, bind
multi on

But still The problem persists

Hmmm...yes, I uncommented some stuff I had run in /etc/ppp/ip-down.local and
it will run - just not fetchmail. So I have diald running
/etc/ppp/ip-down.local whenever it closes down the ppp link. This is with
pppd version 2.3 patch level 3. Using /etc/ppp/ip-down.local to shut down
fetchmail worked fine, until I started using diald. I must've changed
something else, and forgotten what...:)

Subject: SAMBA UNDER LINUX RED HAT 6
Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 16:24:57 +0800

I have started using LINUX RED HAT 5.2 and than 6, three months ago. I have
learnt to move around in LINUX by reading all the HOW-TOs available from LDP
servers. It was not so difficult for me because I came from DOS era. After
experiencing three month's use, I thought that LINUX is better as a server
than anything for end users. Under MS Window NT4 and 95, we all are
connected in our LAN. At the moment, one of Win NT4 is tasked to act as a
server. It is going fine now at the moment, but as the number of users in
the office are growing, I believed that LINUX with SAMBA would be best
choice.

Thereafter, I tried to experiment with SAMBA, so that I could talk through
MS Window NT4, 95 and 98. I could see the pc (acting as a server) running
under LINUX with SAMBA in the neighborhood of all PCs running MS Windows.
But when I try to browse or explore the LINUX PC (acting as a server)
running under LINUX, I am confronted the MS Window Password dialogue box
asking "Connect As:" and "Password:". I provide with the user's name and
password
kept in the LINUX and in smb.conf, but to no avail. Even after configuring
Smb.conf according to SMB HOWTO by David Wood ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), it
appears that it that I cannot get through the server running under LINUX
with SAMBA; I was answered back that I am "unknown user" or "incorrect
password".

My xserver under LINUX is GNOME, and there for I installed GnoSamba
(gnosamba-0.3.3-1.i386.rpm) from http://www.open-systems.com/gtksamba.html
but to this day I have not been able to see SAMBConfig on my menu.

I would be happier if only I could explorer the directories in the LINUX
Server, from other PCs running under MS Window 95. I would be most grateful
if anyone could spare time to lecture me on this problem.

We would like to use an ip address of 192.168.1.250 rather than .1 on
the linux masq server.

.1 is in use by the RS/6000 and would not like to change it if
possible.

Can we use .250 or do we have to use .1?

you could write up a little shell script that accepts files as params. and
say mv files to trash then have a delete trash script or build it in one
good luck let me know if you use this apporach. it will work but it would

I'm using a RH 5.1 system as an NIS server for two Solaris 7 systems
(one x86 and one SPARC) and one RH 6.0 system. I don't have any
problems. Do you have any other systems that can use your NIS server

Brian:

Wish I could help you, but you're way ahead of me with wu-ftpd. I'm a
newbee.

Perhaps you can give me a clue to a problem I'm having. I, too am using
RHL 6.0 with wu-ftpd-2.5-2. Ftp has run fine for a month or two. A few
days ago, I used ftpshut to temporarily stop the service, and have been
unable to get the ftp server to start up again. Everytime I try to access
the server, I get a message that the server is shut down, try again later.
I've tried rebooting with no success. How do you restart wu-ftpd after
you've executed ftpshut?

The ftp line in inetd.conf has fewer settings than yours:

    ftp stream tcp nowait root/usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l -a

Thanks for your help.

Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 22:10:15 -0500

Problem Solved!
Just so that it may help someone in the future I have solved the problem I
detailed below.

There were 2 NIC's in my 486 masquerading server: 1 3COM 3C509 and an NE2000
compatable Kingston.
I originally had the Kingston talking directly to my Alcatel ADSL modem and
the 3COM
to my local hub.

Well after eliminating a bunck of other possibilities, in desperation, I
swaped
the NIC's. Now the 3COM was talking to the ADSL modem and the Kingston
was talking to the hub. Problem fixed!!!!

It seems that the kingston card was somehow "locking" up the ethernet
interface in
the ADSL modem (but works fine with the hub). Wierd huh!

Don't do a full reinstall for this, unless you have other reasons to do
so. The easiest way to proceed is:

1) Install a second card.
2) Start up linuxconf.
3) Use linuxconf to configure the new card and network.

Of course, there are lots of details hidden in that #3, but if you've set
up a first card, it shouldn't be too tricky.

Now, that said, if you want to do something like IP masquerading, you'll
need to do more, but reinstalling Linux won't help with that, either.
Read the appropriate HOWTOs if you want help on IP masquerading, routing,
etc.
