Dear freinds,
I just install RH6 for first time, everything is going fine except
when I conect to the Internet everytime I want to view a web I need to type
an IP also other service like telnet, irc and etc.
Would you pls. suggest what I should do cause I found it very
interesting in Linux world now ( but the beginner is the most difficult

With RedHat 6.0 netscape is just flushed.
The problem didn't exist with RedHat 5.2 with the new kernel or
old kernel as you have.

Well, here is what happened, and damn is this poor behavior.
I had killed NFS on the server by HUPing portmap, so I rebooted the machine
and this is when the errors began.
As far as I've been able to tell the reason for these errors is stale file
handles on SunOS 4.1 boxes. If I did a simple 'umount -a' and unmounted
all the hung NFS filesystems (hung since I killed NFS earlier in the day)
and then remounted them, there were no errors, and everything worked fine.
So it seems that error is caused by the Suns trying to access old file
handles or something and nfsd thinking this was a security problem, and
sending out 10,000 cryptic useless error messages per second.
So it isn't all Linux's fault.
I should really hack the nfs code to be a little more verbose/less broken
in this situation.

Yep. There are two groups of TCP?UDP setting you must have and there's no
guarantee it will work with your linux version/distribution. I have
Slackware 4.0 (2.2.6) and had Slackware 3.6 (2.0.35) and neither worked.
You have to port forward TCP 389, 582, 1503, 1720, and 1731. Then you have
open UDP ports 1024-65535 (all of them above, and including 1024) for
dynamic port allocation. The problem lies in how Netmeeting embeds your
workstation IP address that runs Netmeeting and it doesn't get changed when
the whole packet get forwarded. Guess what? The other end can't find you.
I'm working with Equivalence to try to get their Phonepatch software to work
with my NM 3.01 on my NT and Win95 workstations from my LAN through linux
connected to the internet.
Still waiting on them to respond to the latest serious of tests.

I've got a PPP-over-Ethernet connection for my external internet connection
on my Linux router (2.0.36). I've got it setup running IP MASQ to hide the
internal machines behind the IP assigned on the PPPoE link. The problem is
that the MTU on the PPPoE link is 1492, not 1500 and this is apparently
causing problems with http traffic through the router. Can someone explain
the implications of this? I've been able to get some http traffic through
if I set the MTU on some internal machines to 1492 as well but it doesn't
seem to be doing as well as expected. Traffic through the router used to
scream when it was just IP-on-Ethernet on both interfaces and both used MTUs
of 1500. It's significantly slower with the PPPoE and 1492 MTU.

I have set up a tcp-ip connection to the internet, my nslookup works like a
champ, but I can't use ping, traceroute, etc. because it is looking at the
/etc/hosts file. I verified this by hard coding a known IP address and sure

Disabled pnp on that nic? (dos setup-util for it at 3com)
And, it beeing a combo card, have you either set the nic to the right
tranceiver with the setup-util, or pointed the driver to the right
tranceiver? (and turned off full-duplex if it happends to be set to
that.)

You dont need (and should _not_ give it irq-values when loading the
module.)
How do you know it is at IRQ 11? As a result of warm-boot from win9*
or is it set in bios to that? (can be done, but.)

What if the card is detected with a ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff station address?
Read the Help [link] File on this topic.
Quick-fixups (but read the above section when you get a chance):
Cold (unplug an ATX box!) boot, especially with 3c905B Cyclone.
Disable the "PnP OS" setting in the BIOS setup.

Split the problem. Try first loading it (unplugged?) with a (bogus?)
static ip-nr and the settings the module may need. Look at URL: above.
If loading it unconnected is a problem hmm..
If it works, then look at the dhcp part of it.

arp who has abby.chelsea.com tell barbie.chelsea.com
arp reply abby.chelsea.com is at 0:0:b4:85:22:7c

barbie.chelsea.com.137 > abby.chelsea.com.137:udp 62

barbi.chelsea.com.1111 > abby.chelsea.com.139: . ack 1 win 8508 (DF)
It seems to play this scenario out every 14 or 15 minutes, over and over.
abby is gateway print server firewall(ipfwadm) ip masq is enabled.
barbie is win 95 with brwse access to abby with samba but"NO" permissions
enabled . Print shares are available to barbie. I have 1 other linux box
"carly" that is used spareingly as a www machine.
I run RH 5.2 with a few added modules
As I said in an earlier post I am very new to this and trying my best to
solve my own problems. So if it is brutally simple to you guru's out there
please be gentle!
Thanks again for any time taken to help me out...

All I could find, there doesn't appear to be a HOWTO, was the NAG. I

It says all you have to do is setup both the adapters, with different

This is all done!
I can't setup routing tables as such b/c the PPP doesn't have static

I think that the default gateway address should be 192.19.200.1, so
that ICMP Reply packets will go back out the right port. (I assume
that when you tried to ping the Linux box from W95, you used 192.19.200.1
as the target.)
To test this, you will have to remove the default gateway route from your
routing table, and then put in the one suggested above.
To make it permanent, you will have to alter one or more files in
/etc/rc.d/init.d
Saying which ones requires knowing more detail than we could sort out over
this channel; I recommend tracing through the startup scripts to find out
where
the gateway route is inserted in the routing table.

We have DHCP, and my dynamic address never changes. I tried editing the
files
/etc/HOSTNAME and /etc/hosts by adding the line
MY IP MY_COMPUTERNAME.MY_DOMAIN
I did this as root and when i rebooted, it started up with this new
name. However, i could no longer
log in under my normal user name (my password is accepted, X tries to
start up and then I get sent back to the log in screen.
I am also trying to install ssh2 and i think this hostname confusion
confounded my efforts.
Where so I have to change my hostname and specify my IP? I tried to do
it in Linuxconf, but I got the same results as above.

Jeff Silverman has some on hardware issues.
And I would add that you might have to take a NE2000 isa-pnp nic out
of pnp-state. If you have a setup-disk for your card, it should do
the trick. And set the tranceiver to what you intend to use. (if
combo. Dont use full-duplex if using a hub. (or before you positivly
know you can use it.))
>From the win95 machine do a 'tracert 192.168.1.1'
Not working?
(then) From the win95 machine do a 'arp -a 192.168.1.1'
Not working? No entry?
(If no entry, running (as root) '/usr/sbin/tcpdump arp' when the
win-machine do a 'tracert 192.168.1.1' should show a request _and_ a
reply. If nothing.. well...)
(And you only need tcp/ip on the win side. netmask 255.255.255.0 on
both sides? Does it help to fiddle with routing?)
The other way, 'route', 'arp' and 'traceroute' is there for you.

I'm using ipchains and RH 6.0 no problems. Did you install ipchains from the
RH 6.0 cdrom?

I'm going through the document by W.G. Unruh on "How to hook up PPP in
Linux" along with the Linux PPP HowTo. I
I think I'm getting close to getting a ppp connection, but need some help.
This is a portion of my syslog.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks Dennis

Well, according to the DNS-Howto, and also according to my /etc/host.conf,
the order ought to be
order hosts, bind
This means that the entries in the /etc/hosts file will be considered first,
and
then *everything* else will go to bind (usually, this is what you want to
have
happen). BTW, nslookup ignores /etc/hosts, and goes directly to bind.

Tim,
root logins from over a network, are not allowed by default. It is a
potential security hazard to allow them. I suggest creating an account for
yourself, and using this. You may then use the su(1) command to become root.
This way, it requires two password compromises to gain root access, rather
than one.

Subject: eth1 stops receiving
Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 23:08:54 -0700
I have a dual-homed server running redhat 6.0. One nic (eth0, 3c905) is
connected to my internal network, the other (eth1, tulip) to my adsl modem.
Both cards have a static ip address. I use ipchains to forward and
masquerade packets from my internal network out on to the internet. This
setup has been working for months with redhat 5.x but with redhat 6.0 I find
that eth1 stops receiving after about 5 minutes of inactivity. So, when I'm
working on another machine surfing and stuff, the server is a happy bunny.
If I stop working and wait 5 minutes then packets arriving at eth1 are
ignored (I test this by connecting another machine directly to the net and
then attempt to access the server). eth0 does not exhibit this problem and
switching the roles around (eth0 -> dsl, eth1 -> internal) doesn't seem to
fix it. I cannot find any error messages anywhere that show a problem.
It would be great if someone else has had this problem and knows the answer
but failing that, I'd appreciate any useful suggestions for how I might go
about isolating the error (for example, network monitoring tools, building a
debug kernel, that kind of thing).
Many thanks in advance,
Hervey.
