I hate to bug you guys with what seems to be a crassly newbie question,
but here goes:
On the HOWTO, it mentions how to compile and configure IPMASQ
if you don't have it, but it doesn't tell you how to start it up if it
comes
included with your distribution. Do I have to edit my rc.local file?
Or is there something else I have to "turn on" to get it to work?
I have already configured two ethernet cards, and the IP's etc...
I think this is it for me to be up. Thanks.

Assuming all machines are on the same class address,
192.168.1.1[2][3][4] broadcast of 255.255.255.0 for instance, they will
not go to the default router, they'll just talk to each other for
anything sent to the LAN addresses. Linux box does not even have to be
on or plugged into the internal LAN.
All of your boxes should show a default route of the LAN side of the
Linux box, the Linux box should show a default route of whatever your
ISP gave you, or your eth1 (or whatever your internet connection NIC
is.)
No, if you do not set a default route, you will not get wherever it is
you want to go. Within the subnet of your LAN everyone can talk to
everyone else, if it's not one of those, where will the packet go? The
Linux box will not just take packets not addressed to it.

Hello, I've got 3 3c905B NICs in a Mandrake 6.0 w/kernel 2.2.9-19MDK
(original kernel from distribution). My problem is that every time I boot, I
have to start X, run netcfg and activate all NICs. I check the "Activate at
boot", but it still won't do it automatically.
So, I figured there is some obscure script that takes care of it, but which,
and what is the proper syntax to get it to auto-activate?
Thanks in advance!

I have had Shaw@home until recently and I had no problems with DHCP at
all (RH3.3/RH5.0/RH5.1/RH6.0) ... that is unless you count the time in
the beginning when they just couldn't get the modem to work ;)
So make sure you got the 2 lights (Cable and PC) on the modem lighted.
That means the modem is talking to your PC and the modem is talking to
shaw.
If that's the case, you should now be ready to run dhcpcd. Since you are
having problems I would suggest to run it manually with the -d option to
get detailed messages. Give it the interface (eth0) to be sure. Make sure
there's no other program conflicting (some idiot set up RH6 with pump
instead of dhcpcd ...), so take a short peak at 'ps ax' to make sure you
know what's running.
If you have a Windoze box, I'd suggest trying the DCHP from there since
it is almost foolproof and gives you a quick and dirty assessment whether
the connections is working at all.
Good luck, and my condolences ... telus is better :)
Rudolf
P.S.: There are twisted and untwisted RJ45 cables. My modem accepted
either but that may not be the case for all models ...

I need a little help. I want to put one of our linux servers on the

linux server in our private net over the internet. I have an internic
registered domain. I am using just a dialup network (phone line). I am
running ipmasqing and want to know if I can access my server through my
dailup connection. My question is can I do this through the firewall by
piercing. Do I need a router. Do I need something else entirely. Just
something that is stumping me . Any help would be appreciated. I think
it has to do with the firewall, but I don't really know.

Hi,
have you tried to add the IP address of the client from which you are

problem and it worked.
Perhaps there are problems in the DNS, but I'm not sure of that.

HELLO!
Can someone describe me how to create an own mailing list?
We have to make this for our local problem discussion.
We are students and living on the campus of the university.
So, please help me, if you can! Thank you very much!!!
I have installed redhat linux 6.0
I need only these features:
Subscribing someone to the mailing list when he/she writes a mail
with subject 'subscribe_me_please' to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(name is only an example).
And removes someones mail adress from the list if the subject
contains 'unsubscribe_me_please'.
The name of mailing list should be [EMAIL PROTECTED]
When this adress receives a mail it should be forward the
new mail to all subscribers (which have subscribed to to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Additionally I want to that all mails should be collected in
a file for displaying on the webpage (because all the other
students, which do not subscribe, should still have the
possibility to read the stuff)
I have already created the 2 accounts, apache is running fine
and I have read something about 'procmail', but I don't know
where to start...
Again: Thanx a lot!

Subject: Modem not responding

Hi,
I am trying to set up my Linux file server for PPP connections but am
being thwarted by my modem.
I have switched the mouse between both com ports and both work OK.
When the modem is plugged into comX, I issue the command : echo
"atdt/n" >/dev/cua(X - 1)
... the modem LEDs show it is ready to transmit but no dial tone.
Similarly, using the modem config tool under Redhat and linking
/dev/modem to the correct port, then using network configuarator to set
up a PPP interface produces the same effect... ie no dial tone,
therefore no dialling.
I have another machine running winDoze 95 which runs the modem with no
problem.
I am trying to set up my home network so I don't have to rely on
winDoze, so any help or suggestions that can be thrown my way would be
gladly received.
Thanks in advance

No that's not your problem. I have no problem using PPP under an
SMP kernel. Are you sure you have the right module setup? If the kernels
are the same numerical version you've got to make sure their module trees
don't get confused with one another.

Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 10:12:54 +0200
We had used a file and print-server based on SuSE-Linux 5.1 with kernel
2.0.36. After updating to SuSE-Linux 6.0 (still with kernel 2.0.36) severe
printing problems occured. Printing directly from the server is still
working without any problems, but printing from other clients (based on
SuSE-Linux 6.0 with kernel 2.0.36 and SuSE-Linux 5.1 with kernel 2.0.32)
connected to the server is not possible. If I start a print job and have a
lock a the queue with lpq, the warning "queue is not active (no server
present)" and the message "our-server: lpd: your host does not have line
printer acces" will turn up.
All clients are listed in /etc/hosts.lpd at the server and there had been no
changes in /etc/printcap. lpd is stated on the server and printing directly
on the server is working.
What could be the problem?
Thanks in advance

I've tried to change the address of eth1 to a network that different

I am having a strange networking problem...
SUSE 6.1 Kernel 2.2.10
I can telnet, ping, and use http to get to this machine no problem. I can
view all the docs through the apache module, build a kernel through
telnet... BUT, I cannot FTP a file bigger than about 500 bytes....
Running ifconfig eth0 I noticed that I have xxxx errors all of them
FRAME:xxxx (The errors and frame match).
I tried changing the inetd to use a different FTP deamon, same result. Do I
need to do something here?
I have tried to drop the MTU size of the network card (defaults is 1500 I
tried 500 and worked ONCE... :)
Or is this purely an FTP problem? I have viewed the GIMP docs through http
(Big images in some pages) with no problem. SO I think it is an FTP

If I surf the Internet it will work fine. With Proxy or without Proxy. No
different.
If I reading News, I can only reading News by disable the Proxy in my
browserapp. With enabled Proxy
it did not work. I've looked in Documentation but nothing found. I have
traced the ip-Packets, but there goes no packet to my line.
Why is it so ??
Please help me !
Ok I have the SuseLinuxversion6.0 and the Squid as a Proxy and I masquerade
my local Net and I have a Firewall.
Thanks in Advance

That sounds a lot like accton (cheetah) 1207d. (I got one of them)
You might try the rtl8139 driver.
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html for info and a
updated driver (may be needed.) __If__ it is a realtek-8139-based nic
and not reckognised, sombody might like to know..
http://hq.accton.com.tw/ have some setup for their 1207d.
http://www.realtek.com.tw/cn/cn.html (or somewhere around) may give
info and setup as well.
