You are telnetting in remotely as a normal user, then "su"ing to root?
Most admin utils are stored in the /sbin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/local/sbin
directories, which standard users do not typically have in their path.
On some systems I have noticed that "su"ing to root does not properly
add the sbin directories to the path (which I believe is a shell startup
script problem, ie. /etc/profile).
You should be able to specify the whole path for the utilities you wish
to use. On my system, ipchains is located in /sbin, so I can call
/sbin/ipchains.

the NC3121 is using INTEL chips. I strongly believe it is supported. You
may have to change the IRQ from 11 to something else in the BIOS. There have
been reports that the standard setting conflicts with the SCSI driver under
Linux.

If you plan to ftp files from Win'95 to Linux, I assume you've got both of
these networked together. In this case you might consider using Samba, its
matter of configuring the /etc/smb.conf file. Once configured, start Samba
and you should be able to smbmount the cd from the Windows PC and copy
files, for all practical purposes the CD drive will appear as a local
drive to your Linux box.
Thanks

"scotty" provides some basic facilities of hp openview is you mean nnm
(network node manager), cause openview is a suite of several
applications (about 30 or more).
Install scotty on linux, it provides auto discovery (other mechanism
than openview uses), but it will help you leanring that kind of
applications. I think it also has a mib application builder, and of
course a mib browser......
under http://openview.hp.com you can download a full version of the
nnm 6.0 but i think itss just for nt, hp-ux and solaris.
Hope this helps

It's possible. Actually I'm doing it right now. <grin> The firewall
has to forward a port inside to your machine. It doesn't really matter
what port though. You run your sshd on that port and tell the outside
client to connect on that port.

I have a friend who wants to be able to verbally communicate with his girl
friend using his Linux (SuSE-61 distro) over the Internet. His girl friend
who is in Latin America uses Net2phone on Windows95 platform. Is it
possible for my friend to verbally communicate with his girl friend using
his Linux machine over the Internet? If so, what software does he need to
run?
Any other suggestion is certainly welcome so long as he can utilize his
Linux to verbally communicate with his girl friend over the Internet (to cut
down the long distance telephone call). Thanks in advance.

Subject: IP Masquerading seems flaky with 2.2.x kernels
Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 09:55:27 -0400
I have recently upgraded several network gateway machines to various
versions of the 2.2.x kernel (where x=6, 7, and 10). I was previously
running 2.0.34 which I compiled to include support for IP Masquerading,
and this setup worked very well. I used ipfwadmin to initialize the
masquerading.
I then converted to the various 2.2.x kernels, followed the howto, and
converted all of the ipfwadmin usage to ipchains and made sure to enable
ip forwarding. Here is the current, relevant portion of my
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet:
---
# 42.42.42.42 is a dummy ip to initialize eth0 to before it gets
# the real ip from dhcp. it did not seem to initialize properly
# otherwise.
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 42.42.42.42 up
/sbin/rrdhcpcd
/sbin/rrlogind
/sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 10.0.7.1 up
/sbin/route add -net 10.0.7.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0:0
/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -s 10.0.7.0/24 -i eth0 -j MASQ
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_user
---
I have had varying success with external access using machines on the
local network (10.0.7.0/24). Windows machines (arrgh) and Unix
workstations (two SGI Indys, an HP workstation, an AlphaStation, and a
Sun) have no trouble accessing the Internet through the masquerading
gateway, though all of the Linux boxen have very flaky access.
After rebooting, I can (for example) ping netscape.com seemingly
indefinitely. I then try to ping freshmeat.net, and get at most four
ping responses. Following that, I am unable to access any other
external servers. The same thing happens with any set of two external
servers.
I have read some FAQ's and newsgroups, and tried two things:
* I applied the patch from http://juanjox.linuxhq.com/ and
recompiled the kernel. This slightly decreased the flakiness
(I'm sorry I need to refer to it in such qualitative terms,
though the problem seems very transient and difficult to test)
though it is still very unreliable.
* The MTU on both the gateway and one internal machine I tried
was set to 1500. I tried setting this on all devices on both
machines to 296 as per one FAQ. This did not solve the problem
and only seemed to significantly slow down external transfers.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? I have followed the howto and
completely started over on three instances, with three kernel versions
on two separate computers, and encountered precisely the same problem,
which leads me to believe it may be a kernel bug (or configuration
braindamage on my part). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Steve

This idea may or may not be related to the problem. I've installed two
separate distributions of Linux, and neither has been able to determine that
my US Robotics Sportster Voice PnP has a 16550AF UART. Because of that, the
system was completely unable to communicate with the modem. (I verified this
using a small terminal program (minicom?)) I ended up solving the problem by
explicitly using setserial to tell it what kind of UART I had.
However, it sounds like you're getting a connection, but not authenticating.
I also noticed that you are using CHAP to connect, but from my experience,
most remote connections these days are using PAP. Could that be your
problem? (I missed your original post).
The last possibility that I can think of is that something in your modem
setup string is keeping your modem from playing well with the remote modem.
I've never encountered this problem with analog modems, but I certainly ran
into it with ISDN.

Hi Todd,
Not that difficult
check that your kernel supports ipx and ncpfs. ncp related installed
ipx_configure --auto_interface=on --auto_primary=on
to set up IPX
then
ncpmount -S <Server> -U <User> <Mount Point>
There is one limitation : The connection is bindary, so you have to setup
one or more bindary context in the NDS of your server.
Another limitation : It doesn't work with the newest service packs and
with Netware 5.0
Doing backup ? I would not do that. You could only backup the files. The
NDS (User rights & Co) are lost !
Best is to buy a backup program. it is worth the money.
