Can someone compare one over the other? I have used linuxconf web
interface to some degree (some functions was not working as in X), but
never used webmin and I don't know whether it is advisable to try. I'm
also anxious that it could mess up with linuxconf if I use it in a
non-fresh installation.

Thanks.

I use "Modem Lights" applet instead of "PPP Dialer". It is better
(includes rcv and xmt lights, and a short-term traffic history) and it
is highly configurable. Here is how I configured it (properties):

General / Updates per second: 5
General / Connect command: kppp
General / Disconnect command: kill `/sbin/pidof pppd`
General / Confirm connection: [X]
Advanced / Modem lock file: /var/lock/LCK..ttyS2
Advanced / Device: ppp0
Advanced / Use ISDN: [ ]

I had this happen on my box after setting up quotta
I have no idea exactly what causes it.... but quotta seems to mess up a lot of
stuff...
but, I stop quotta, and I can use passwd again, and everything else.
Then, I just restart quotta. It's a pain, and shouldn't be neccessary, but
that's the solution I'm using on my system.

you may want to try a
ps a | grep quotta

turn it off it is running (on my RH6 box, it's /sbin/quottaoff)

maybe this will help ya out?

I've got NIS set up as a Master on one linux box. I've got NIS set
up as a client on a second linux box. This stuff seems to be working.

I've also go autofs set up to mount directories.

I want to set up autofs so that it can mount the home directories
for NIS users.

Right now, every time I add a new user I have to do the following
1). add the new user
2). run a script to add the new users's home directory to my
    /etc/auto.home file
3). do a make in the /var/yp directory to load the auto.home
    file into my map stuff.
4). go to the second linux box and do a ypcat -k auto.home and
write the results to my /etc directory.
5). stop autofs
6). start autfs

Is it possible to set up NIS and autofs to mount the home
directories and have it automatically see new home directories?

thanks.

The default setup AFAIK. If the ppp connection isn't up sendmail
should simply queue external mail anyway because it can't look them up
in DNS or connect to the host.

The only thing you might want to do is ensure sendmail isn't running
the queue every 15 minutes, or whatever, by making sure it starts as
just `sendmail -bd' rather than `sendmail -bd -q15', and then just run
the queue when you connect with `sendmail -q' in /etc/ppp/ip-up.

There's a window maker doc app that has, if I remember correcly, 64 square
"leds" on it, each can be configured to monitor a certain computer... giving
you a quick visual status on 64 machines per instance of the program in a
64x64pixel area (the default size of a window maker doc app).

kinda neat.... not sure whether or not it'd suit your needs though.

Hi,

pretty simple question....
I'd like to know how to connect a linux box to the consol port of a cisco
router (1600 series, 2500 series, etc...)

I know how to technically plug it in, and in windows, you just open up
hyperterminal and have it watch the serial port you connected to.

What how-to/man/info page should I be looking at, or can someone just tell me
what I'd enter on the command line?

thanks in advance,

Josh I.

Check that you have the 127.0.0.1 localhost record in your /etc/hosts.deny
or /etc/hosts.allow files.

Further observations:

The system has 3 SCSI controllers on the motherboard, two AIC-7890's and
one AIC-7860.

Toward the end of the boot sequence, I see a message "Delaying ETH0
Initialization". Why is it being delayed?

Also, when I try to mount the CD-ROM drive, I get a message that ISO9660
file system is not supported by the kernel.

I have tried loading other versions and distributions of Linux, but they
will not load at all. Some end the loading process with a "Kernel Panic"
message that they are unable to mount VFS on device '....' (the device
varies with the distribution. Other distributions go to never-never-land
(the screen goes blank and the only way to get control of the machine is
to disconnect the 3 power cords).

This is all very frustrating as we are trying to set the machine up as a
web server, and my boss has said that if I can't get Linux going very
soon, we will use Windows NT and IIS (Yecch!)

Use minicom
first minicom in supervisor mode ( "-s" option), save the profile as cisco (for
example)
later call minicom cisco and you can instantly work the console.

I'm masquerading correctly but I'm still not getting vpn traffic through

I'm using the following ipchains:

ipchains -P foward deny
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQ

Do I need more ipchain commands? Another patch? I'm stuck.

Thanks for any help.

Subject: Wireless network between Linux and Win95?
Date: Sun, 01 Aug 1999 18:05:46 GMT

Hi,
I'm a complete noobie to networking and I'm not sure this is possible
so I thought I'd ask...

I have a Windoze 95 computer in one room. The way that this room is
situated on the house, a phone, cable, or ethernet line cannot be
dropped. The other computer is a Linux box that I play around with
since Linux is superior to Winblows. What I would like to do is, get a
cable internet connection hooked up on the Linux box, and then network
it to my Windoze computer so that it can share the high speed
connection (and so I don't have to run a 75 foot phone line halfway
accross the *#@!*&^ house). Since I can't run an ethernet line to the
Windoze box, I was thinking about using a wireless networking kit such
as Diamond MultiMedia's Homefree Kit. My question is, has anyone used a
wireless kit? How is their performance? Can someone recommend one that
will work between a Windoze and Linux box that will also allow
file/device/modem sharing? Is what I want even possible!? =)

Thanks a ton,
Neo

I don't know what to try now. I have a thinkpad570 with a TI 1450

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

so, i did a clean install of Red Hat 6.0
when i try to run dhcpcd, it pauses for a while and times out
the actually error message in /var/log/dhcpcd.log:

Aug 1 11:04:18 localhost dhcpcd[577]: timed out waiting for a valid DHCP
server response

the connections works perfectly in win95, so i know it's "alive".
alarmingly, i can't get an IP even when i boot off of the boot/rook
disks and try to do a Red Hat ftp/install. it says that it can't get a
valid response.

when i try to run "ifup eth0" it says that it is detering the IP
address and then outputs
"Operation Failed". i can't seem to get this working.. the ethernet
card works fine, i used to have it on an ethernet network -- which is
why i did a total clean install. i thought that previous ethernet
configurations maybe interfering, but that's not the case.

i'm using RoadRunner in Fairfax, VA --- many other people have been able
to get it working, especially "out of the box". do you have any
