Sounds like a Unix98 PTY problem, see the kernels' documentation for
how to set it up.

Yes, try this one against a stock netkit-telnetd-0.12 version ...

patches/index.html
... and use the absolute link. These are unofficial patches and so there
is no link to them on my pages.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Mike)

Never had this before..
Manually connected a win98 using smbmount from the 2.0.5a version of samba on
slak Linux 2.2.10 kernel.
The connect went well, asked for a password, and connected up. Using the
netwatcher in windows.. I could see the connection there..
Now when I change to /mnt (where I mounted the share for testing) I got this:

hostname:/# cd /mnt
hostname:/mnt# ls
smb_refresh_inode: /// changed mode, 0040755 to 0100755
/bin/ls: .: I/O error
hostname:/mnt#

I remember seeing someone with the same prob in the main list, but couldn't
find the message. Anyone have any ideas?
Thankx in advance
Mike

I am currently using RH6. I have not had a problem getting Linux to
talk with the internet and web server setup that is accessable to the
outside world.. I can currently send and receive mail from @home by
using Netscape.

What I am trying to learn, is how to setup mail on my server. I guess
there are different mail transfer agents, and am just trying to get a
grasp on how to use them.

Does someone use a RTL8019A RealTek chipset whit Linux ? I can't get it
work properly. I use the
kernel 2.2.5 and configure it as a NE2000/ISA compatible card. Please
e-mail me if you have a suggest. Thank you.

I agree with leaving in the flexibility and it is needed, but I
am speaking about the desktop arena, which is not the same as the
large network arena.

Linux is useless in the desktop arena because it has far too much
uneeded complexity. Making easy ways to do things for desktop
users will in no way diminish Linux's power and flexibility. The
complexity and power would still be there, but users would have a
choice in doing things the easy, default way or the harder more
flexible way.

can't use ppp as non-root.
get the error, can't access /dev/cua1 permission denied.

have tried set uid to root on pppd,
also x priviledges are very liberal, all users can execute.

fyi, thanks to all, I finally got my sb1000 working via adelpha cable. I
had to get the patch from the floppy version, ran the shell so it would
update my ppp files. then I did the make and make install after the patch.

I then manually

cp -i sb1000.o /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net
cp -i cmconfig /usr/local/sbin
cp -i cmping /usr/local/sbin

The shell did a good job updating the PPP files.

I also had to edit my isapnp.conf to remove the work (check) from the
ioports.. My isapnp didn't like that, after that. I was good to go...
Thanks to all for the assistance. Learned allot on this exercise. Next
firewalling.

This sounds similar the problem I am having:

I tried to upgrade recently from kernel 2.0.36 to a 2.2 kernel (tried
2.2.5 and 2.2.10) and the reason I'm still using the 2.0.36 is that the
ppp connection to my ISP didn't work with the 2.2 versions.
The scripts, ppp-version etc. are exactly the same for both, so I'm
wondering why it doesn't work.

Here is the resulting log for a failed connection using pppd 2.3.5 and
kernel 2.2.5:

Subject: Server is spewing 6M of data!
Date: 4 Aug 1999 22:32:56 GMT

Hi, all.

I'm having a strange problem on our RealAudio/RealVideo server. We have
several RealNetworks servers set up, with connections for two radio
stations going 24 hours a day.

The problem that we are having is that every once in a while, an
unbelievable amount of data begins to pump into (out of?) the server. The
place where we have co-located our server has these graphs that measure
the amount. At the peak of a day, the Real Servers - working normally
- have about 2M going through them.

Today, there was a period of about 12 hours, where the server has been
pumping about 6M of data through it, CONTINUOUSLY, and steadily. Of
course, no one caught it while it was happening, and syslog had stopped
(another problem - how does syslogd just stop logging things?? It still
runs in the ps list!?) By the time I got notified, the server was back to
pumping out 1-2M, and the only clue I have is this error in the
/var/log/debug:

Aug 4 00:04:15 blue kernel: eth0: Transmit error, Tx status register 82.
Aug 4 00:05:24 blue last message repeated 4 times

However, that message has been going for months, it seems. I'm not sure
that it has anything to do with the problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a Linux and Win98 box on a LAN. I'm using kernel 2.2.6 on Linux. I'm
having problems transfering large files across the network (~500MB) using
Samba and FTP. The transfer seems to stall (no data is transfered) and then
the connection is dropped. Its impossible for me to transfer any large files
this way - it always fails! Smaller files work 100%. This is -very- wierd!!
Is this a bug in the linux kernel or do I need to change some settings in
the Win98 registry for TCPIP?

Anyone else had this problem?

Suggestions?

This is a difficult card to install. Checkout the realtek site
(www.realtek.com.tw) and download the setup and diagnostic programme
to modify the way the card acts. You need to configure it for
"jumperless mode" and find out the I/O and IRQ details as set in the
card.

All the various drivers and hints are located at:

        http://www.realtek.com.tw/cn/driver/8019-driver.htm

Good luck

John,

Post as many of the error messages as you can.

I did it before. But I forget exactly how to do it. It is something related
to the server configuration in the dial-up properties, you need to say logon
to network (or domain?). Of course, in network control panel, you also need
to say logon to WinNT domain.

: <asyncmap 0xa0 000> <auth pap> <magic 0x3e503dff> <pcomp> <accomp>]

Pppd sends a LCP ConfReq, gets a LCP ConfReq from the peer, and sends
the peer a LCP ConfAck in response to the LCP ConfReq it got.

This sequence repeats over and over with some minor variations but the
peer never sends pppd a LCP ConfAck, or anything else as a response to
pppd's LCP ConfReq's. The only thing I know that can cause this behavior
is an incorrectly configured UART type for the modem's device file.

Dunno why it would be different for a new kernel though. Anyway if,
say, the modem's serial port has a 16550A UART then the type configured
for the device file must be for a 16550A, not a 16550 or a 16450 .
The configuration is done by setserial in a boot-up file. BTW I can't
recommend setserial's automatic configuration.

Doing setserial /dev/ttySx, x=whatever for your modem, will show
how the UART is configured. Determining what UART the modem actually
uses is up to you. You need at least setserial-2.15 according to the
linux/Documentation/Changes file, which is *must* reading for anyone
upgrading to a new kernel series.

If this doesn't help the only other thing might be to upgrade the kernel
to 2.2.8 or later. There was a significant revision in the 2.2.8 PPP
kernel support code, but I don't know just why.

Does anyone know what the "default" settings are for a NE2000 clone
ethernet card are? Specifically the i/o port and the irq. Thanks.

These driver's didn't work for me, but they might for you so...

Try http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html

    ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/3c59x.c
    ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/test/3c59x.c

If you can get them working please tell me how, as I've wasted about 6
hours trying to compile 3 program very way i could think of!!! And
I've even had to reboot my Linux server more times then I've ever
reboot my Win98 PC. Man that's depressing.

Good Luck.... You WILL need it!

There's a terrific _short_ and easy to understand off-line mail how-to
at:

http://space.tin.it/io/sigovoni/sendmail-offline.html

It may not get you completely set up, but I think at least it will get
you started. ;-)
