There is a Linux User Group in Kansas City. It is a special interest group
of Heartland Users Group (HUG). You can find more information at
http://www.hugkc.org or http://www.sabakisoftware.com/linux/indesx.html
Unfortunately the HUGs usually do not meet during the summer months due to
heat. The Linux group is usually the fourth Wednesday of every month. I
believe the next one is September 22. At this meeting they are scheduled to
have an "Install-fest". I was at the May meeting, and while there weren't a
great deal of people, I did walk away with a free copy of Caldera OpenLinux
2.2. If there is anything else that you would like to know, please contact
me. I hope this helps!

Hi. It is possible that you have put a space in front
of the DEVICE field in your cbq-* file.
cbq.init uses sed heavily ( great, I love sed !!!) and it is
slooooow. So the author uses an optimisation whereby he looks for
^DEVICE= ( ie if the first letter isn't D in DEVICE, the search breaks
and continues with the next line - this saves having to check every
durn dang letter ).

Alternatively, a tab or space between the end of the DEVICE
and the = will do it too !

Hope this helps,
leon

Subject: You'll never figure this one out, port 80 dead?
Date: Fri, 06 Aug 1999 13:13:21 GMT

I have a problem which I can't even fathom, much less solve.. but here
goes.

First, a quick rundown of my network. 6 PCs with addresses of
192.168.0.xxx. Four of the PCs run Windows, 2 run Linux. The server is
RedHat 5.2 and is an IP Masquerading server for the other workstations.
The other linux machine is RedHat 6.0 but also has a dual boot to Windows
95. Just the other day the RedHat6.0 workstation stopped being able to
browse the web. It could still telnet, ping, do pop3, and FTP.. just no
HTTP and it didn't matter what the webbrowser was. I tried Netscape, KFM,
and Lynx. It just sits there "connecting to server..." Oddly enough, when
booted into Windows 95 (using the same IP address) it is able to browse
websites, so I rule out the server as a problem. So I decided to do an
experiment and connected to another PC running Linuxconf in HTTP mode.. so
I could use port 98 instead of port 80. guess what? My webbrowser on
RedHat6 pulls it up just fine. So it most definatly appears that port 80
is somehow screwed. Now here is where it becomes worse. I decided rather
than to screw with it that I would just restore my system from a ghost
image I made a few weeks ago when it was working fine... same problem.
Just for the heck, I restored the server from a ghosted backup also.. same
problem. So now it appears I have to solve this problem on my own.. what
could it be?

im currently playing with the qos features in the (new) kernel. to
configure the whole thing i'm using cbq.init
but when i run it i get following error messages:

verleihnix# ./cbq.init start
**CBQ: can't find device eth0!
**CBQ: turned OFF.

i modified the example configuration file for my ip's, but the rest is the
same. and i have an device eth0 which works really great ;-)

Date: Fri, 06 Aug 1999 11:54:06 -0500

I want to setup my LAN with cabel modem and I have a static IP from
@home. I had
my cable modem running on Win98. Also, I used to have my LAN connect to
internet
through a 56K modem and all my PCs shared the same modem.

I have been trying several things and I still can't ping the DNS or
gateway
given by @home. I can ping my LAN and eth1. I think I have the problem
setting
up my routing table. Can someone please give me any help?

Actually, I can see the modem light flashes when I try to ping
internet's IPs.

Thanks.

This is unexpected but it does agree with the 6-second difference in
the timestamps for the connect and the hangup in the previous post.
I'd *guess* that the handheld didn't get what it expected and hungup -
but I'm not familiar with wince either. But the handheld would have to
have a short fuse to do that after just 3 LCP requests.

Since it works for another box with the same kernel and ppp versions take
a look at the device file configuration on the problem box with "setserial
/dev/ttyS0" and check the UART and other settings for agreement with
what the modem actually uses. For example, the handheld might hangup
with a misconfigured UART where any LCP request arriving at it's end
would be scrambled.

If that didn't help then I'd probably check the modem profile against
the profile on the box that works and make it match the one that works.

I am useing Masq Server that allows a user to start the ppp connection
then after they are dont it closes it. If a new user opens his masq
client they are told the internet is already open and they dont need to
dial it. I was going to use diald but i wanted some way to control who
was alowed to dial the internet.

Hi folks,

we lately had a couple of hard to trace and explain
response problems with NFS under Linux. We are using
a 2.0.x kernel and NFSv2.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I wonder whether
there is a decent

        NFS traffic monitoring

tool available. I'd love to know what the NFS throughput
of a server actually is, and the names of the clients
causing the traffic.

It looks like an attack to me.

The are looking at your netbios ports for Windows shares. You know:
looking for someone who left Windoze file sharing on.

As for the other port numbers try the following link for a list of
port numbers and their meanings. It's a little more complete than

ipportfw is old you need ipmasqadm from http://juanjox.kernelnotes.org/ if u
want to enable
portforwarding when masqerading ... 2.2.10 distribution should already have
portfw

I've been following some of these ICMP error message threads.

I get the same thing on my Linux, except with a twist:
"xxx.xxx.xxx.0 sent an invalid ICMP error to a broadcast"
How would I track this down? Its coming from the network address.

I've tried running a packet sniffer, filtered to ICMP only, and there are a
lot of "port unreachable" errors floating by, but no incidents that
synchronize with the messages that pop up on the Linux console.

If I understand what I've read elsewhere, I can at least suppress these
annoying messages thusly?

"/sbin/ipchains -A input -s xxx.xxx.xxx.0 -j DENY"

Any comments welcome.

I'm using kernel 2.2.6 with ipmasqadm recompiled for PPCLinux R5
You will find most of the dox are out of date regarding port forwarding.
Try this

ipmasqadm portfw -a -P <all,tcp,udp> -L <your internet_IP> src_port -R
<your internal IP> dest_port

eg to forward a telnet connection
ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L 203.6.5.1 23 -R 192.168.1.3 23

I think the etherexpress 10 Linux driver does not work very well - more
because of problems with the card than with the driver. You can try
getting Intel's DOS-based 'softset' program and running
    softset /bart
if it is acting completely crazy, and in general things like 'tcpdump'
or anything that requires promiscuous mode makes it completely fail.
Als when it loads tell the driver the interrupt and IO port like this
insmod eexpress io=240 irq=5
or whatever you use.
