I've got Madge PCI cards working fine with RH6, I did download the
source code version rather than pre-compiled binaries. Then just
compiled and install the new driver.
ISA problems may be caused by resource conflicts, you could try directly
telling the driver which resources the card uses.
See the readme that comes with the driver for more information.

I do care about knowing how to do this, but not when it takes me
more than an hour to figure it out and there is no standard way
to do it. There are a lot of interesting things in computer
science and this involves Linux too, but I don't have the time to
learn the details of every single little thing. Sometimes I like
for something to work in a standard with a standard configuration
and not thinking about it. Learning the details of everything
takes far too much time. Although interesting it would probably
take ten years since I do not have a photographic memory.
I am not lazy or stupid. I am just more interested in doing
other things in other areas of computer science than setting up
and configuring hardware. I hate system administration, but I
like application programming and graphics. I do not need to be
an expert system admin to become an expert in application
programming and graphics.
There is a saying about Linux: Linux is only free if your time
is worthless. This is absolutely true. I spend far too much
time configuring things that could be more standardized. My time
is not worthless and neither is anybody else's.
Linux has a long way to go to be useful as a desktop OS, but I
believe it can get there real quickly if more people realize it
needs major improvements in the desktop arena. In any case linux
will get there.

Hello!
I've a 486 running Slackware and a PII Running Redhat 5.2 and Apache
I want to reach my Apache server from the Internet using the 486 as firewall
(Internet -> 486 -> PII/Apache)
I know this should probably be done using IPCHAINS/IPMASQADM.....
I've been reading a lot of Howto's etc., but I can't get it running :-(
The other way around PII -> 486 -> Internet works fine!
Could you please help me?

Probably not. It's been my observation that sites running Microsoft

machine initiating a SMTP connection to the Exchange server. Don't
ask me why--must be some gay Microsoft shit. :) But it seems to be
harmless.

cound't communicate with the passwords shadowed. My error
message was different, but I was using a different product,

The Slackware box would show up as a valid server to be

Correction: kernel was 2.2.5-15.
I believe the problem is the new "cwnd=1" feature in the Redhat 6.0 stack.
This may be the reason why some people are experiencing those slow network
problems.
The cwnd=1 causes Redhat 6.0 to wait for an ack even if it takes 300msec,
and even if TCP window is big enough before it sends subsequent packets. I
still haven't understood why they started this cwnd thingy to prevent
congestion: wouldn't setting a smaller TCP window help as well? Or that's
because the TCP window is usually dominated by the client end?

I have a nice box with RedHat 6.0 running on it, diald to control my
dialup, and have ppp0 dedicated to ttyS1 for a serial cable connection
to another computer. It connects to the Linux box fine, pings back and
forth, but I can only connect using telnet or FTP when the Linux box is
online (connected to the internet).
When I try to telnet or ftp from the second box to the Linux box, I get
that the connection's refused.
I've tried renaming hosts.allow/deny (although the second box is fully
allowed on the Linux box), but I'm not sure what else to try.
I'd like to FTP stuff around without having to be on the phone.. :)
Thanks.

It's probably blocked if it comes back as unreachable.

They probably have telnet disabled to that machine. If they administer
it through the console, no one needs to telnet in. Either that or they
have used a different port to telnet in through, deliberately
obfuscating their setup to make a hack attempt more challenging.
> So, it looks me that the ISP has blocked the smtp port. Can anyone

There is probably no way to bypass the block. When I ran my ISP, I
blocked the dial up customers from opening any SMTP connections outside
of the local network. I had to do this in order to prevent individuals
from using their dial up accounts to send spam through unsecured SMTP
servers. Since it was set up through the router, there was no way to
bypass it.
I'm betting that since you are using mailandnews.com, you aren't trying
to spam anyone. Unfortunately for you, I also bet NetZero probably
won't care. I'm guessing you won't have a choice in the matter and will
have to go through another service if you want to bypass the block.

If I do that, others on the newsgroup won't have a chance to benefit
