What happens if my NT machine is down then? It also doubles as a Linux
development server box for certain applications, and I would hate for the
Samba server to disappear from Win98 whenever the NT server is in Linux.

I have been able to sucessfully mount Novell Netware volumes on a RH
6.0a linux box with the following added to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:

#############################################################################
########### Added local stuff here
#############################################################################

# Delete any existing incorrect interface
/usr/bin/ipx_interface delall
# Add the correct interface
/usr/bin/ipx_interface add -p eth0 802.3
# Configure it
/sbin/ipx_configure --auto_primary=on --auto_interface=on
# Connect and mount
/usr/bin/ncpmount -S MYSERVER -U mylogin.my.local.contex -C \
    -P mypasswd -f 777 /mnt

Has anyone been able to print successfully using Novell Netware
mounted printers from a linux box?

Pat, You might want to try this question on comp.protocols.smb
Jeremy Allison of the samba team monitors this and might just have an
answer, maybe not. BTW are you running samba .5a if not, upgrade
all of the 2.0's are buggy.

This site has a step by step howto for complete setup of samba. steps
for both linux and the win machine. (and they really work <G>)
http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/index.html
and this one as well
http://home.talkcity.com/MigrationPath/maguai/samba.html

These sites singly or in combination are nearly guaranteed to get you
networked.

I really think that Chan might be better off just DLing the latest
version os samba 2.0.5a, I think and reinstalling it. nmb will then
be placed correctly etc. Also check to make sure all necessary
networking functions are enabled in the kernel.

Subject: cbq, bandwithshaping possible bugs in kernel

Hi to all. I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on a problem I
have with class based quing under linux 2.2.9 .

After running cbq (using cbq.init ) for a while, the ethernet card being
regulated locks up totally. My system is as follows: latest iproute2,
2.2.9 kernel, cyrix 300 MHz, 64 meg ram. I have used 2 sets of ethernet
cards - 3com509 ( which hang the quickest) and realtek 8139A based cards
(100Mbps). The main diff between the 2 cards, other than speed is buffer
size - 8K in 3c509, 64K in realtek). I am regulating at 1 and 2 Mbps,
and load testing by ftping 11 meg files. I control both inward traffic
and outbound traffic - but the interface which dies is always the one
under heavy load.
netstat -na shows a send-q queue of between 51000 and 58000 bytes when
sending data, and zero when the ftp is complete , about 52000 when iface
is hung.
Bringing the interface down then up after it has hung will allow traffic
for a short while, but the link just dies again within 11 megs. I have
to reboot to restore it to normal. 3com cards - crash within 50 megs.
Realtek can go for 200 or more before crashing. Ifconfig can't
destinguish between a working or a failed interface.

If you have any thoughts aboute what else I can check to determine the
failure, please let me know. Anywhere to look in proc for more clues (
route and masq files in proc don't seem too different). If anyone can
direct me to a more appropriate forum (eg cbq), I would be much obliged.

Cheers,
leon

A long shot admittedly, but check that NIC card, also a very long
one, it might be heat related to a memory chip. That intermittent
that corrects itself really does smell of hardware.

For starters, you could install tcp_wrappers if not already done. This
will log the (wrapped daemon's) connection/refused connection status
(depending on your hosts.{allow,deny}). Then, for Linux, you should look
at 'tcplog'. Not sure off hand what the URL to this is, but I believe it
can be found on ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/ ... (look for ip*log*).
There are various types of connection/connection attempt loggers, but
many of them out there do not log the "stealth scans". You could do
things like having tcpdump show only packets with a certain flag in the
header, hack the source code for the loggers, or whatever. And, you
shouldn't solely rely on /var/log/secure to contain all your
connection/connection attempt logs. Check with your /etc/syslog.conf,
and the facilities the daemons/wrappers log to.

Date: Sat, 7 Aug 1999 00:18:31 -0400

I'm running a home lan with Linux 5.2 (3c509b) and Win98. Last week all was
well, could ping & ftp between to hearts content.

Didn't change a thing (that I know of) and now the Linux machine fails to
initialize the NIC.

Have traced the boot logs & config files, don't see anything out of whack.
"ifconfig" only shows the lo entry. If I "ifup eth0" the response is
"Delaying eth0 initialization." If I try to "ifconfig eth0..." with
appropriate ip, netmask, etc. I get
"SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by device
eth0: unknown interface"

If I go under linuxconfig in x I can SEE the eth0 interface defined, it just
says "disabled"-- I can select "enable" and the toggle changes but if I exit
& reenter linuxconfig then it says "disabled" again.

Card has power (green LED), cables plugged in, hub shows my other PC active
but nothing from Linux.

Any ideas?

Perhaps inetd is not configured properly or the /etc/hosts.equiv. Can
someone post a good inetd.conf file for him - I'm not in a position to
get him one at the moment. He could then compare it to what he has.
I'm not sure which line to look for without looking at a good one
either.

What is the architecture and OS of your target host?

Can you telnet to the target host?

Do you have root capability on the target host to fix it? It could be
that this is intentionally disabled by the SA. You might check with
that person, if its not you, and save some bandwidth.

WIn9x will get the I/O address usually correct on asking the system to

I am not aware about any check utility, except the one coming on the floppy
