you could open up netcfg, from here you add ppp0 interface. then you need
to set the isp phone #, username and you password. you could start dial up
by activating the interface or type /sbin/ifup ppp0 from terminal. to
hang-up use /sbin/ifdown ppp0.
if you still can't connect you could run #tail -f /var/log/messages on
another terminal. it help you to troubleshoot the problem.
please check HOW-To PPP or How to hook up PPP in Linux by W.G. Unruh.

*laugh* As the expression goes - "been there, done that". :) I just don't
seem to be able to get it working in Net Neighbourhood. I'll admit that
I've modified some of the settings that they use - perhaps I should try the
exact smb.conf they use.... but in "theory" the changes I made shouldn't
make it disappear.
Am very confused....

Subject: Weird network conflict
Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1999 08:46:11 GMT
Hi,
I recently got RH6.0, pump, and roadrunner up and running (thanks
everyone for helping out). However, I changed my hostname to helena,
and from the network configurator, I can see a number of domain names
such as san.rr.com and rr.com including locahost.localdomain (??). I
understand localhost, but localdomain? Is that a standard name?
Now my problem is that if I log in with GNOME, it says that it cannot
find the ip address for helena. If I log in with KDE it works fine I
get no error message, but once I am in (KDE or GNOME), I can browse
the net.
My concern is that my system always go to the net even when it does
not need or should go to the net. How do I ensure that 'everything'
is using localhost and not the dynamic ip address given to me by
roadrunner? For example, when I popup an xterm, I would like to use
DISPLAY=localhost and not DISPLAY=helena, and so on.
By the way, is it possible to have my own hostname at all?
Please help....Thanks.
Helena

My old 486DX2 /100 MHz with 32MByte RAM is likely the same configuration as
yours (Big tower, many hard drives etc.) I had it working as server
(Apache, Samba, news, Informix SE database engine and such stuff) and X
terminal. Programming with C, C++, Java doesn't breakdown performance,
but whenever I start Netscape or StarOffice I had to take a cup of coffee
and wait...
Today that old box is still runing as file, print and news server, fast
enough for my home network.
BTW I use NE2000 clones with 10MBits....
My news server is a K2/450MHz with 256MByte running S.u.S.E. Linux 6.1.
Here I do everything on X11 with KDE . There are no problems running big
applications like Netscape or StarOffice...

So I would prefer using the 486 as file server and the pent as workstation.

Subject: Squid problem
Hi folks!
I'm running squid 1.2. All works fine, expect some Java applets. When
loading an applet that has to display an image I get "null pointer
exception" and the image isn't displayed (The applet runs). Loading
the applet direct from the squid server works.
There must be an option to turn on, so Java can load images via squid,
but what?
Any hel welcome

I thinks Gordon should tell us exactly what an Engineer is? I designed the
entire Nedcor International Banking Divisions Microsoft Architecture and
applied it, this statement I made is actually defining Engineering.
Engineering is application of science for use in computers, machines etc and
Computers is a science on its own. So if one applies succesfully, he is
engineering.

Subject: ntp server returns permission denied
Date: Sat, 7 Aug 1999 10:37:18 +0100
I am trying to get xntpd v4 working as a client on Suse 6.1. My machine is
on a subnet (192.168.0.x) gatewayed to a company LAN by another linux
machine acting as an IP-Masquerading router.
My ntp.conf has two server statements (both servers are on the company LAN
and are set up to serve time only to machines on the company LAN) and the
drift file line so should work, however in the log file both servers return
permission denied errors. My machine looks like its on the company LAN due
to the IP-Masquerading so the servers should serve time to it. I can ping
the servers so I know the routing is working. Any ideas ?

Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1999 11:07:35 GMT
Hi all,
I got a problem. I have 3 networked cards and I need some help.
I got in a linux box:
1 ATM card (connected to ADSL modem)(static IP)
1 3Com card (connected to cable Modem) (DHCP)
1 RealTak card (connected to a windoz/Linux machine)(private IP)
So I got 2 external ISPs and one internal machine.
What I want to do is use the cable modem as the default route (which
dhcpcd sets up nicely) then route some sites through the ADSL modem.
Of course the Windoz/
The reason for this cost/performance. Cable is cheap unlimited
international bandwith but slow, ADSL is fast but costly) So...this
setup is a compromise.
How do I set this up. I can currently setup each one up individually
on and they both work through masquerade to my other machine. But I
don't know how to route certain sites to the one card or another.
Please help.
You can contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or reply to this message

Thank you..

I have almost got my IP Masq up and running except for one last problem.
If I have the client machines set up with a resolv.conf of my ISP's DNS
servers, then when I'm not connected to the net they will sit forever
trying to resolve host names. I've tried setting the Masq timeouts
down to zero whilst offline with no effect.
Any suggestions?
