I have had this problem serveral times before. Make sure that the all
machines in question have the Fully Qualified Domain Name declared in
the hosts table. Hope this is it. Note: That would usually cause the
same type of delay when telnetting in.

Go to www.freshmeat.net and search for icq. You will find that there

Subject: route table settings for cable modem (@home / wave)
Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 03:53:13 GMT
Hello all,
I just got the Rogers @ home cable modem service (Canada) installed
and I naturally must hook it up to my linux machine. While attempting
to do so, I had to configure their standard 3C509b 3Com (PnP) card and
it seems to be working properly.
I used the netmask given to me (255.255.252.0) to configure eth0 using
ifconfig. Now for the 'route' configuration, I had problems.
First off, my IP lies within the 24.112.165.x network and my gateway
within the 24.112.164.x network (hence the unusual netmask I assume).
To get to the point, I need some helping setting up the route table
since no support is provided by the cable company. I've tried just
about everything. During my previous encouters with such situations,
I simply added the routes:
% route add xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dev eth0
% route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the gateway)
This always solved my problem before. While attempting to debug the
problem, I used the 'tcpdump' tool to view any kind of network traffic
but there was none. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate
it. Thanks.

Eric,
Just a guess, but what do you have as the broadcast address on your
Samba Server. In particular, I am referring to this:
Samba Server - RH 5.2, Kernel 2.2.2
IP address 192.168.1.1 <----
NT4.0 Server (NON PDC or BDC) SP3
IP address 192.168.2.1 <----
If the Samba Server's broadcast address is 192.168.1.255, then the NT
Server and Win98 machine would not be alerted when "smbd" and "nmbd" is
started. As I said earlier, just a guess.

You can always re-crimp if you don't want to ruin the whole cable.
Sometimes just crimping the existing connector again will fix the
cable problem if something comes loose. It does definitely sound like
a cable issue though.

Subject: Adding 16 public IP's
Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 13:45:44 +0800
Hello,
Currently our clients' office has a Linux box that serves as a gateway
for 16 IP's. I want to make the Linux box handle 16 more IP's. The
question is what setting do I have to change? Currently the gateway
handles the IP's x.y.z.224-239 and I want to make it handle the IP's
x.y.z.224-254 (that's actually 15 more IP's and not 16). One idea I have
in mind is to change the "route add" command of the network card from:
/sbin/route add -net x.y.z.224 netmask 255.255.255.240
to:
/sbin/route add -net x.y.z.224 netmask 255.255.255.224
Do I have to change anything else? Would my task be more difficult if
the new IP's are not adjacent in their number to the old ones?
Thanks and best regards
Sleiman

Hi Roger,
I needed to do the same thing here on the firewall (on cable and DHCP), so
I needed it to be flexible if the lease expired, machine dropped, etc.
Here's what I do in the firewall script ...
# Determine DHCP assigned IP address for External interface
EXTERNALIF="eth1"
EXTERNALIP=`ifconfig $EXTERNALIF | grep "inet" | cut -c21-36 | tr ' '
'\012' | grep "\."`
Try the above (with your values of course) and play with the cut portion if
need be to get what you need, dump the above into a small script and add an
echo $EXTERNALIP after the two lines to see what your grepping until it
works right. Hope this helps you out.

Try this
ifconfig | grep "P-t-P" | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d P -f 1
it does the trick on my system. :-)

Had the same problem, I re-enabled the win machine to act as the browse master
(under

I used the Step by Step guide from [EMAIL PROTECTED], I think he recommends to

Hi Ben,
I've got two of those cards in my firewall machine (486), and they both work
fine with the stock Linux driver (eepro.o). You may need to grab the DOS
utilities from Intel if you don't have the disks for them, but other than
that, the cards work great, no complaints here.
