I need some help.

I'm looking for a way to determine my ip address, it changes whenever I
reboot because I have to dial in... If I type ifconfig I get this
result.

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1
          RX packets:212510 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:212510 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:208.235.19.170 P-t-P:208.235.19.130
Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:256396 errors:4 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:4
          TX packets:277715 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:10

A whole bunch of junk... However I just need to get the following info
the 208.235.19.170 - thats my ip address. How much can I filter out
with either grep or any other program that will cut it down to just the
ip - maybe after the first colon then 15 spaces after that(3.3.3.3).

Any ideas on how I can do this??? So far I've just got it down to an
entire line of output. "P-t-P" seams to be the only unique string of
text I can identify to get grep to spit out that line - even though I'm
shooting for the inet addr value.

[grunky@peoria32 grunky]$ ifconfig | grep "inet addr"
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet addr:208.235.19.170 P-t-P:208.235.19.130
Mask:255.255.255.255

Spits out to much info, but

[grunky@peoria32 grunky]$ ifconfig | grep "P-t-P"
          inet addr:208.235.19.170 P-t-P:208.235.19.130
Mask:255.255.255.255

Gives me the line I want. Now just to trim it down to inet addr value

Am I going about this the wrong way?? Should I be using ifconfig and
then grep to cut things down or is there a utility that will do this for
me? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

With the ".forward" in our mail directory one can forward
the incoming mails to another. But we cannot store the
   mail/s.

Any way to store a copy and also to forward the same to
   another e-mail address??

Also I don't want to forward big mails(say above 0.5MB) but
instead store them. Any script(s) pl.??

   Thanks in Advance.

Subject: Firewall on same subnet?
Date: 07 Aug 1999 17:16:12 PDT

I'm not sure if this is even possible (thus the post) but...
I'm trying to setup a Linux Firewall (using Red Hat v5.2) between my DSL
router and my local LAN. It goes something like this:

 ------ ----------- ---------- -----
| WAN | -- | My router | ------- | Firewall | ------------ | LAN |
 ------ ----------- ---------- -----
               x.x.86.161 x.x.86.162 x.x.86.163

Subnet: 255.255.255.240
Network: x.x.86.160

As you can see from the above, I'm trying to place the Firewall on the
same subnet as the network for which I'd like to protect. That is,
between my router and LAN. It seems like this would be possible
somehow??? The problem I'm having now is that when I activate both
cards on the firewall, only the last card to be activated is reachable..
that is ping'able from the firewall machine. For example, if eth0 and
eth1 are configured as x.x.86.162 and x.x.86.163 respectively, then I
can only ping x.x.86.163 (assuming it is activated last). If I activate
eth0 last, then only eth0 is reachable. However, if I configure them so
they are on separate networks, let's say eth0 = x.x.85.122, and eth1 =
x.x.86.163 and activate them both, they are both reachable. It is only
when both NICs are configured to be on the same network that I have this
problem. Therefore, I have ruled out any hardware problems. Would this
"routing" issue be handled by "ipfwadm"? I've looked many places for a
solution and I'm starting to lose gumption (sited "Zen and the Art of
Motorcycle Maintenance") :) My DSL router does have Firewall software
but I'd rather not spend the extra cash.. and I'd rather do it myself.

Cheers,
Kyle

Hey thanks for the info AND the quick reply. I put this in a small script
and its set to run during boot. If my system ever goes down and comes back
up I'll know what its new ip is. Computer is set to dial in automatically -
sleep delay allows the modem to connect, etc..

#!/bin/sh

ipaddress=`ifconfig | grep "P-t-P" | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d P -f 1`
thedate=`date`
resolved=`nslookup $ipaddress | grep -i name | cut -d : -f 2`

sleep 20; echo Attention: Your computer came back up on $thedate with the
following ip address of $ipaddress and a dns lookup tells that your hostname
is set to $resolved | mail root@localhost, grunky@localhost,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] -s "System Back Up"

hostname $resolved

This script will set determine the ip, appropriate hostname, and set the new
hostname.. Please check to see if this is correct - should work....

Subject: linux client / wingate server
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 8 Aug 99 01:51:45 EDT

hi guys...got a tough one

I have a home LAN which I've put together. The first of three machines Is running
wingate, and has a dedicated
line into the internet (via cable modem). The other machines (with the exception of
one) are running win95/98
and have the wingate client software installed. They access the internet without a
problem, using the wingate
server.

Here's the problem. I have one client machine running linux (rh 6.0). I figured that
the only thing I would
need to do would be to point the linux box to the wingate machine as my default
gateway, dhcp server and dns
server (seeing as how wingate, to an extent acts as all three. The wingate server
does assign the IP address
to the linux box. And, the wingate machine is acting as the gateway. However,
whenever I do anything that
requires dns lookup, the linux box just sits there, acting like it doesnt know what to
do. For example, if I
type in an IP address of a www site into netscape or lynx, it goes lickety split.
But, when i put in the
corresponding URL name (or ANY url) it just sits there, and sometimes locks up the
browser!

Here's what Ive tried:

1. Using the Wingate machine as DNS server, by enabling the DNS service on the
Wingate box
2. Disabling the wingate DNS service, and putting in a valid DNS server into
/etc/resolv.conf
3. Disabling the wingate DNS service, and enabling TCP Mapping under wingate

Now, I know that the easiest solution (albeit the longest to do) would be to get rid
of wingate and setup the
cable modem on a linux box using ip masquarading. However, I can't do that for
reasons that I really dont
feel like going into.

Can anyone help me? Seeing as how I really don't surf the ng's that often, please
email me the solution @:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanx in advance

Mike U.

Hi,
I need some assistance with kppp. I set my connections up using linuxconf.
Kppp will dial the modem (Creative Labs Modem Blaster) and start to log in,
but in the end it reports:

Error
Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come up!

Additionally, I think its a problem with kppp (Im not sure though),
because when I use the connect in linuxconf it doesnt complain. But I dont
know how to test that to make sure (Ive only had it installed for 48 hours)

Thank in advance.

I think you will need to change the EEPROM on the card, using a utility
program, on a DOS box.

You may have received a disk which allows reprogramming the card's settings.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up a local news server.
Basically it is working *BUT* every time a user connects or switches
groups innfeed gets spawned/restarted at a rate of 10 times per second.
part of /var/log/messages:

Aug 8 12:24:22 e-server innd[453]: innfeed!:18:proc:2284 closed
Aug 8 12:24:22 e-server innd[453]: innfeed! spawned

innfeed!:18:proc:2286
Aug 8 12:24:22 e-server innd[453]: innfeed! restarted

About 10 restarts, for a period of 8 seconds !
This also happens automatically, every 5 minutes.
It keeps the hard drive very busy ;-)

I think I have set-up the newsgroups etc correct.
I removed some files from /etc/news, because the PC is not connected
to the internet, and it kept trying to distribute files.

I assume that you will be using samba for sharing drives and printers.
You can still have the verification done by the domain controller.
In your /etc/smb.conf file, set:

security = domain
password server = <NT-Server-Name>
