Subject: Problem dialing up with SuSE 6.1
Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 19:59:55 +0800
Hi,
I have a problem dialing up to the ISP (specifically, no
response from
the modem). I have drilled down to the modem itself. For your info,
under
SuSE 5.3, which I'm using to compose this message, the modem is working
perfectly.
Under SuSE 6.1 , however, even the program "minicom" couldn't
link to
the modem. After much troubleshooting (I have checked everything that I
know including compilation of ppp, linking /dev/modem to the right port
/dev/ttys0), I think it could be due to the message that I saw when
booting SuSE 6.1. They are:
Serial device version 4.27 with HUB-6 MANY_PORTS MULTIPORT SHARE_IRQ
enabled
Setting up dummy0 device
Are they the cause of the problem? If not, any suggestions? If yes,
what should I do? Thanks in advance.

just use the "route" command.
for both connections you know the gateway through which you reah the internet via that
connection.
on ppp connections it is the remote machines IP ... on shared medium networks like
ethernet it is the routers address.
on the static link you know the IP of your gateway .. and on the dhcp one you also get
that information along with your dynamic ip.
so you can do this:
route add -host www.ibm.com gw static_gw
route add -host www.cnn.com gw dyn_gw
and so on ...
for a whole network try this:
route add -net x.y.z.c gw static_gw netmask 255.255.0.0
-heinrich

Probably NE2000 clones. Cheap and plentiful. Non-plug-and-pray type
are best.

It's part of the IMAP daemon (at least it is in Redhat 5.2), so try looking
up IMAP packages.

Set up a small private usenet server.

INN (www.isc.org IIRC) or CNEWS
Configuring these things isn't easy, so be warned.

Err...the only bit I know about OS design is a small booklet I skimmed
over but from what I understand the whole point is to prevent
deadlocks, not te resolve them ? If you get into a deadlock its too
late.
This belongs in a newsgroup about OS design, not networking.

I use a NE2000 pci clone. Dirt cheap and works like a charm. If you
are in doubt what to buy, take a look at the Ethernet Howto and check
whats best supported.

Just put it in a Linux box with NE2000 drivers, cross your fingers and
let the autoprobe do its work. Worked for me.

Here is a quote from a reply to a similar question on
c.o.l.development.system:
Handling of Deadlocks
When you drive in a tight street and another car comes from the
opposite direction, one of you will drive reverse sooner or later. There are
better things to do than sit in a car all day long. In the process world
situation is totally different. there is no way to handle a deadlock. You
simply must not let it happen.

If you have access to the mini-HOWTOs look for Linux+NT-Loader.
This is how I got mine to use the NT boot loader. One caveat; Following
the instructions and putting the Linux boot past the 1024th cylinder of a
large HD just plain doesn't work.
BTW, comp.os.linux.setup would be a more appropriate ng for this post...

Subject: ES1371 Audio PCI and Mandrake 6.0
Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 16:59:00 GMT
I just installed Mandrake 6.0 and I am having trouble getting sound
working. I ran sndconfig (Sound Configuration Utility 0.33) and it
detects my Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI as ES1371 (which I believe is
correct) and then tries to do a sound test. It displays the following
message in a box titled "Unable to Play Audio":
The following error occurred playing the sample: x
x x
x sox: Known effects: avg band chorus copy cut deemph echo x
x echos flanger highp lowp map mask phaser pick polyphase x
x rate resample reverb reverse split stat vibro x
x sox: Effect '/dev/dsp' is not known!
(The x's are actually line draw characters, I pasted that directly
from sndconfig's text mode window)
I checked that /dev/dsp exists, but just in case I ran '/dev/MAKEDEV
audio' to recreate the necessary dev files.
I upgraded sox to sox-12.15-7mdk.i586.rpm and tried sndconfig again
and now it errors with:
The following error occurred playing the sample: x
x x
x sox: Sun/NeXT/DEC header doesn't start with magic word x
x Try the '.ul' file type with '-t ul -r 8000 filename'
This sound card worked fine with Red Hat 5.2 and the sndconfig in
RH5.2 set it up with no manual intervention of tweaking.
Any thoughts on how to fix this or how to configure the sound card
without using sndconfig?

Hi
That is normal.
You can't log in as root unless you are on the console normally.
make yourself a normal user, log in as them, and su -l to become root.
Generally, it is a bad idea to do this as someone can grab your root
password ( happened to me, and I lost access to that box for good ).
Suggest you set up secure shell ssh and sshd

Hi all,
I've had this problem recently, trying to ./configure and make a proxy ,
an error is prompted : ndbm.h not found !
I am working on a RH 6.0 and no trace can be found of this ndbm.h file
anywhere. The RedHat site doesn't mention a thing and the only ndbm.h
available are parts of rpm for RH 4.x and 5.x and the GnoRPM wouldn't
let me install them - this is mainly the reason why I am not even
considering doing it manually, btw.
I have since then forgotten about my proxy and found other ways to do
it. But now as I am trying to install apache 1.3.6, I get the same
error. It is becoming *very* annoying.
Any hint welcome

Sorry, I should have explained myself better. I have no problems
getting to oher hosts on my own network. The problem is with external
hosts on the internet.
For instance, if I have a ppp0 interface up on the server and I "ping
www.asite.com" from a client I get a normal reply. If I take down the
net connectiong and ping again, the client sits forever.
I can make the server suffer the same problem if I make it it's own
default route.
If I "route add default gw 192.168.0.1 eth0" on the server (192.168.0.1)
and then ping an outside host I get an infinite hang....
Any other suggestions?
Billy.

Subject: Cable problem?
I'm trying to set up a home ethernet network of 2 computers using linux
and without using
a hub. I know I have to get a cross-over UTP cat 5 cable. But what I
would like to know
is how can I know the difference between a cross-over cable and one
which is not just by
looking at the cable?
The problem is I have set up 2 linux boxes and configured the ethernet
cards and the eth0
interface, and I bought a cross-over cable (supposedly what the vendor
told me) but I
couldn't ping one computer from the other when I connected the two
together.
I don't know whether it's the problem with the cable or the
configuration of my network?

If you don't have the floppy or cd, you can hit their web page.
I found a bunch of drivers @
http://206.135.146.107/networking/drivers/default.asp#kne2000
(Apparently, Kingston doesn't have their reverse dns setup
correctly...)
Or, you can hit www.kingston.com and work through the links.

Subject: tons of trouble with qpopper and apop!!!
Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 14:45:09 GMT
Howdy Y'all!!
No matter what I do, I just cannot seem to get APOP to work with
qpopper. It is driving me mad, everytime I get the same error, when I
run popauth -init to create the apop database:
./popauth: error setting ownership of POP authorization DB: No such
file or directory
I have checked out the FAQ at the qpopper webpage, and read the
INSTALL file dozens of times now. Just curious if someone out there
has run into this problem too, and that they could give me a hand.
See y'all later!

Do a "man arp". What it sounds like you want to do is assign static
arp table entries for the machines on your network, so pay extra
attention to the -s and -f options.
