The one and only real bitbucket in the world of unix is a file
named "/dev/null". You can use open(2) followed by write(2) to
dispose the data in a way that is very friendly to our environment :-)
For our problem a simple 'char buf[xxx];' should do the job.

I can�t give You any definite answer on this one. I could use some more
information about the card itself ;-), but, if I boldly assume the card is
based on an "old" non-PNP isa architecture, the problem probably resides
in the driver itself; beeing a LOT of NE2000-compatible NICs out there, and
those often not following the NE-specs. there is fairly difficult building
a generic, fully functional NE-driver. The solution would probably be to
enable the debugging-flag when compiling the driver, boil up a big pot of
coffee and start diving into the fascinating depths of
sourcecode-debugging.
Other options would be to replace the card (no fun in that *s*) or
subscribing to the appropriate Linux mailing list (these people are VERY
good and often equally helpfull) and post the question there.

I just got through setting up RH6.0/Sparc as a cable gateway. I
installed the DHCPCd package, and everything appears to be working fine
-- but I can't figure out why!
DHCPCd is not running. Something called 'pump' is. Is pump part of the
DHCPC system? Should I see DHCPCd in a ps.
Somebody care to say how this subsystem works?

dont worry about nothing next to the 3c509.o - that only means that
there is no dependency of this module for any other.

3c509 cards have never needed extra options, so I am not sure whether
your giving them those options in linuxconf was a good idea. I don't
personally like or use linuxconf - it scares me.
Look at /etc/conf.modules. There should be something like
eth0 3c509
eth1 3c509
..
..
other stuff.
I suggest you delete any stuff like io=0x210 irq=10 that comes after the
3c509 card.
why don't you also try to directly put the 3c509 module into the kernel
with a insmod ./3c509.o from the /lib/modules/preferred/net directory -
that should at least tell you if the cards settings haven't been nailed.
If it looks like the card is nailed, you could try downloading 3c5x9.exe
utility- running it to uncompress it, then put the executables onto a
dos bootable disk and reconfigure the card.

Currently this network is for my own use and I haven't hooked into the
Internet yet. There are no crackers living in my house that I know of so
I'm not too worried about security yet. Once I go onto the net I'll be more
careful.

Mindspring has been saying that they are restricting mail to only be
able to be sent through their mail servers, and I think they have
finally done it.
I've been trying to send mail (elm, or just /bin/mail, with sendmail) to
a friend, and he has been saying he never gets the mail, and sure
enough, in the mail queue are several mails with "Deferred: Connection
timed out with...." as the error message.
So how do I setup sendmail to relay through Mindsprings mail servers,
without using bang addresses.. ugh.. what is that,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] It's been years.. :)
Given that, Mindspring so far is still a pretty decent ISP.
Anyway, any help configuring sendmail to relay through Mindspring would
be appreciated. I gave the man page a look over but nothing popped out.

hostname : ????? (I don't know if this should be linux or something else)

dev ppp0 (brought up automatically by pppd with demand dialing)
ip : 194.222.168.226 (static ip address)
hostname : hot-shot.demon.co.uk
I have it all bodged together but it's not right. I won't go into my
problems because I don't fully understand them. Could someone go through my
steps to create this together with all the routes etc. I have the cards
working, and I have my net connection working. If someone could go through
from start to finish and then if I get stuck I can post my exact problems.

the "-v" causes the ssh client to spit
out lots of information about the ways it tries to verify you. Do the same thing to
another machine (one you can connect to via ssh) and compare the output.
the next thing you should try would be to start the sshd with the "-d" option.
you'll have to start it manualy because is will not go into background and only accept
one connection. ...see sshd's man page.
connect from another machine and watch the output .. either on the console where you
started sshd or in your syslog .. (not sure where it logs to in debug mode)

You've found the latest version of eql_enslave that I've been able to find.
I've been unable to get it to run in RedHat Linux, and it won't recompile
for me either. The source code expects at least one file that does'nt exist
with the version of EQL that installs with RHL 6.0 server class. Have been
looking for about a month for someone who can give some advice.

First I'll show you the current situation.

Running debian potato with pppd 2.3 and dhcpd v2beta1

As you can see eth0 and eth1 have a routing to itself 'coz when I change
that my dhcpserver says there's no route to the host. Is this ok?
I also can't ping from one net to the other? Also a routing problem??
pppd also won't add a defaultroute because there's already one there.
One really weird thing too is the fact that the 192.168.1.0 net can go out
on the internet via the server, but the 192.168.2.0 net won't do it. The
machines in the 192.168.2.0 net can ping the server but won't go any
further.
I think I've made some mistakes in thinking, and I hope you can help me out.

You're absolutely correct - the server is indeed on a different subnet, and
I am assuming that's where all my problems are coming from. How can I get
the broadcasting to work without putting them on the same subnet?

Same setup here, and Netscape works fine, and I did nothing to make
changes to the DNS in Wingate. Make sure you're setting proxy settings

80), and you must also tell Netscape which port:

on my SuSE 6.1 - box I can activate or deactivate possible root-login
using telnet in my /etc/rc.config
root FTP-access is resticted by /etc/ftpusers
all users in there have NO ftp-access !
simply delete 'root' - and thats it !
But as you said: This is really NOT a good idea !!!

I am thinking of setting up a Linux box with 512K DSL running IP masquerade
for the purpose of connecting 200 people to the internet. I would also
configure it so that all packets coming in on port 25 would be forwarded to
the Exchange server. This will hopefully allow the Exchange server to relay
mail to and from the internet. We have 5 NT servers that need to be safe
from the internet.
Is this a well conceived plan?
Is IP masq safe?
Will the forwarding of 25 allow the exchange server to relay mail
properly?(assuming the MX record points to the Linux box)

Interesting. Well try to download the newest tulip.c source from Donald
Becker's site. Might just be an incompatibility with the one distributed
in your version of the kernel.
