Seems like you dont ned the 'io' parameter on 3c509 when loaded as
module. But you need the 'irq' value. And can pass an 'xcvr' value
if you want to use another tranceiver than the one set in the card
(check with the 3com configuration util, and turn off pnp on the card
if it is a 3com 509b. The _b_ is important.)

http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/3c509.html

Only the IRQ and transceiver setting may be overridden when
using the river as a module. Setting two cards to 10base2/IRQ10
and AUI/IRQ11 is done by using the xcvr and irq module options:

        options 3c509 xcvr=3,3 irq=10,11

In conf.modules this is maybee all that is needed (assuming you use
irq 10 on the nic, check!.):

   alias eth0 3c509
   options 3c509 irq=10

Hi,

How about using NFS for your install. You can get NFS server/client apps on
most shareware sites. Try www.share.com and do a search for NFS. I have used
the Omni NFS package and find it very reliable. Installed 2 Slackware 4.0
installations without a problem.

It's probably available in 6.0, but I've no experience with it.

To get it working, I just did a "vi /etc/inetd.conf", and
uncommented the line which looked like
imap stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd imapd

I imagine that there was probably something at install time
which was set so that it installed the binaries in the correct
place - or that it was automatic when the "server" option was
chosen. I didn't install it, and haven't installed a linux
version since slackware a few years ago, so I'm not sure about
that one.

Hello all,

I was running a ipmasquerade network, with two machines I will call them
insideA, and insideB from inside accessing one internet connection on
machine I will call gatewayC. For some reason everything is sooo slow
lately. I mean from the two machines insideA/insideB accessing gatewayC
as well as machine gatewayC accessing the Internet. Trying to access the
web from insideA/insideB via gatewayC is just extremely slow. I tried
disabling most services on gatewayC and still things has not speed up.
I just moved to ipchains in hope of solving this problem, it didn't work.

The only other thing I am concerned of is that the machine has been
hacked into before while I left it on for a few days. ie last log showed
someone ftp'ed into it from an unknown location. Also log showed that
they tried to access start imapd2 repeatedly. They also attempted SYN packet
attacked at around the same time. Hopefully he didn't leave any running
funny program that bog down the system. :-)

I also suspect the hub that I am using maybe defective but have no extra
hub to test out this theory.

Are there any tools out there that will show me where the bottle neck might
be? like whether it is the hub? or the linux box itself?

I appreciate any help in resolving this mess. Please email if possible.

INFOS: I am now running kernel 2.2.9, basic linux installation, with
apache server. CPU: AMD 200, 16MB RAM (before you say RAM!, I
have to say it worked just fine before with a swap space).

heh!
telnetting to your linux from remote is almost the same as logging on

I'm sure your problem can be fixed my reading the PPP-HOW-TO from the online
doc's, but in general heres the best way I know how:

1. from the control panel choose the modem (phone) icon and set the ttySx to
your modem com port (ttyS0 = com1)

2. copy /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.7/scripts/* to /etc/ppp

3. xedit (or whatever you prefer) the ppp-on scriptfrom /etc/ppp to reflect
your user name, password and ISP's tel. number. You probably don't need to
change the IP's unless you're not DHCP. Near the bottom of the script you'll
see something that indicates what ttySx the script will use and the baud
rate. Change these to reflect the modem setting in step 1. and the baud of
your modem. Save the file.

4. xedit your /etc/resolv.conf file to reflect you DNS servers. Your ISP can
provide you these. Save the file.

(you need to make the rest executable by chmod'ing the permissions of the
next files.)
5. chmod +x /etc/ppp/ppp-on
6. chmod +x /etc/ppp/ppp-on-dialer
7. chmod +x /etc/ppp/ppp-off

now type: /etc/ppp/ppp-on
if the entries from above are correct you should be surfin'
to disconnect type: /etc/ppp/ppp-off

I'm running RH5.2 as a gateway on an intel box with 3coms X2 V90 modem and
IP maskerading. When I use this modem in Win95, I get great connection
speeds every time. With RH, it's very slow (it seems like 28.8). The modem
connects with that distinct V90 tone though. How do I know what speed I
connected at? Do I need to update my pppd or fine tune it (pppd ver
2.3.5-1) so I can connect at 50k plus? Please help, Thanks.
PS: I've read the pppd docs and they dont help. My options file has one
entry: locks

I'm trying to get a ethernet bridge going using two NE2000 clones &
RH6.0. I followed the Bridge HOWTO instructions concerning copying the
loop back network scripts to ifcfg-eth0 & eth1 to get rid of allocated
IP addresses. I then ran BRCFG -ena to start the bridge, it seemed to
be happy:

bridging is ENABLED debugging is DISABLED

Running tcpdump -i eth* gave the expected traffic on each side of the
bridge, but nothing that's surposed to get though it does.
Copying the lo configuration file does in fact give each ethernet card
an IP address of 127.0.0.1 etc. But if you remove this from the
ifcfg-eth* files the BRCFG program fails to work.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: How to configure two 3c509 network cards?

I have two ISA 3c509 ethernet cards. I used dos program to set their io
and irq to 210,5 and 300,10. How to edit my conf.modules to make them
work on my linux box?

Thanks.

Subject: Linux with NT and @home

Beginner networking question for everyone out there...

I have recently installed Red Hat 6.0 on a Pentium machine, and have another
dual boot machine (Windows 95/NT 4.0). I want to use my Linux box as a
database server. I also have @home cable modem service. All machines are
connected via a simple 4 port hub, with the @home service configured to work
in NT (non-static DHCP server assigned IP address).

I want to be able to see the Linux box from NT, but have been unsuccessful
in doing so. I have successfully configured the Windows 95 installation to
talk to the Linux box, and have also setup Samba to work in this case...I
can share files/directories/printers successfully. However, the @home stuff
in NT is throwing me off, and I am unsure how I can keep the @home
configured on NT, have the Linux box separate from the @home network, and
still be able to access the Linux machine from NT.

Could someone point me to the appropriate docs, or offer suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: wu-ftpd help. any tutorials for this?

Let me say that I am not quite new at Slackware. I have been
at it since 3.1 and I like it. but... I need a wu-ftpd for dummies
tutorial. I looked at ftpaccess in my online man and I cannot for the
life of me make heads or tails of this beast!
Right now it still at the Standard slackware 3.9 defaults
because I rather not muff it up. How do I enable anonymous uploads
into incoming? or how about tarring and gziping or bziping a directory
for download? My local users, namely this account and of course root
can download and upload. but how do I get anonymous the ability to
upload?
Related to this. who has a good simple html tutorial. While I
do have Xwindows. I rather use VI and add my own html tags as my web
pages are going to be text based only (I had tutorials but I lost them
several years ago). Being this system only has 20mb of ram I rather
not clog it with netscape communicator just to do a simple web page!

Look on the CD for /RedHat/RPMS/imap*.rpm. Install it by rpm -ivh
imap*.rpm. Then uncomment the three lines in /etc/inetd.conf that
deal with POP2, POP3 and IMAP.
