Hi,

I'm running Caldera OpenLinux 2.2. I've just converted to an ISDN
telephone connection and an ISDN modem and have spent a frustratingly
large amount of time failing to solve the following problem. 

I can make a PPP connection to my ISP but I can't even ping the remote
IP address he sends me, let alone go somewhere else on the Internet.
This happens both using kppp and when configuring pppd manually. 

Here is a tail on /var/log/messages:

The output from route is then:

When I do 'ping 172.29.1.104' then I see the transmit and receive lights
on the modem flashing (and I see the bytes in and out ticking over if I
use 'kppp') but ping fails to get/recognize any reply. 

ifconfig then shows:

which seems to show that all the receive packets were in error. But what
does the 'frame:' count mean????

The problem is definitely with my Linux setup, because from Windows NT I
can connect to both my ISP's using this ISDN modem. Also, I was able to
connect to them from Linux using my old analog modem before I changed to
ISDN.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong here???????

Unfortunately, most of the 56K PCI modems available today are software
modems to some degree.  This would include yours, which is probably a
Rockwell HCF (controllerless) modem.  Please check in the "GX5" section of
the Big List at:

Rockwell HCF modems are very similar to USR Winmodems, whereas Rockwell
HSP modems ("soft modems") additionally lack an on-board DSP.  Both types
require the OEM software to perform functions that are included in the
Rockwell ACF chips.

and outgoing mail only! Whenever I try to send something to the mail

Folks,

My RH 5.2 has a small problem. It doesn't recognize its ethernet card.

HW:

PPro 200MHz
128MB RAM
4G SCSI DISK
AHA-2940 SCSI Card
3C900-TP0 Ethernet Card
Diamond MM Viper 330

Everything works fine, but there's not connectivity.

netstat -i:

        Shows only the loopback lo0

So does ifconfig -a

If I try ifconfiging eth0, it says there's no such device.

There is no ifcfg-eth0 made in /etc/sysconfig/network either,
shouldn't the installation process have done that?

So, how does one add an ethernet card AFTER the initial installation
is over. BTW, the initial installation cliamed to "find" my ethernet
card just fine. It even loads up NET3 and all the other goodies. It made
the correct resolv.conf, hosts, etc. files and everything. I just
need to find a way to add the devices and all to make the ethernet work.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas?

I'd suggest heading over to one of the RPM repositories, and check to see if 
there is a newer version of netatalk (I think there is, but I can't remember 
the version I'm running).  I had a bunch of problems with the original Redhat 
version, and they went away once I installed the newest version of the 
software.

Check your DNS revolver, for a slow link/bad DNS link.  We had the same
problem on two systems, running RHL 6.0.

We changed over to a faster DNS server, and the slow telnet and who... went

I've set up Qpopper 2.53 as my pop3 server (using SUSE 5.3). Everything
seems to be up and running okay (i.e. when I telnet in, I get get the
"OK" welcome message). But when I try to retrieve mail, or set up a
user, I get the message: "ERR: Password for <user> incorrect"

I've run ./config --enable-specialauth and installed the GDBM libraries,
so I can't see what I'm doing wrong.

If anyone has ideas on how to solve this problem, I'd really appreciate
hearing them.

        I am kind of desperate at this point as I need to get this working for
a client ASAP.
        I follow the instructions in the NET-3-HOWTO on how to esatablish a
tunnel. I make sure i have the ipip module loaded. I bring up the
ethernet interface. Then i bring up the tunnel with
ifconfig tunl0 aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd
i try and establish the route with:
route add -net 192.168.1.0/24 gw 10.2.0.1 tunl0 
        (just like it says)
and i get "SICOADDRT: Network is unreachable" or something similar.
        I do have a route set to 10.2.0.1 and i can ping it.
        The ipip module is also loaded on the other end of the tunnel.
        It's like it is trying to use the tunl0 as a device instead of a
tunnel. 
        I am running RedHat 6.0 with the latest "official" kernel and two
via-rhine NIC's.
        Any suggestions are VERY welcome.

Here is a sendmail question: I need sendmail on Red Hat 6 to check a
message "To: address" and if it is addressed to a certain domain to send
it to a server that will take care of sending it out, but if it is
anything else but the specified domain in the "To: address" it will just
dump it without sending back a reply to the user.  I know that there are
a lot of options on filtering From: mail but I am having real trouble
filtering To: mail that LAN users are sending out.  Firewall is not an
option, nor any additional equpment or software.  I am wondering if this
can be done through sendmail.cf and how?  Thank you very much.

Its a C-Lib. There is Berkley "libdb" the zdb and the GNU DB ... libgdbm"
just a plain linux distribution has most of them.

I have a three machine LAN that I am trying to set up an ISP with.
Here's my configuration (for testing purposes):

machine 1          -dials in to machine 2 and is authenticated with PAP
                        All works fine here; I can log in.

machine 2          -configured mgetty configuration files to accept
incoming calls and ppp options files,
                         etc. Everything seems t work fine here too.

machine 3            -this machine is the  one with the internet
connection (gateway).

My problem is that I can't surf the web on machine 1. I have input my
ISPs DNS info. into my dial-up networking connection info. Also, I can
only connect at 26400???????

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have an odd situation with kernel 2.2.10-ac12.  I have a network of
machines that use both 10.10.10.0/24 and 11.11.11.0/24.  The primary
interfaces on all the machines are 10.10.10.X addresses, some also have
aliased interfaces with 10.10.10.X and 11.11.11.X addresses.

One of the machines is a modem rack with assigned ip address 10.10.10.10
and modems dynamically assigned 10.10.10.11-10.10.10.58.  When I dial
into the modem rack I cannot connect to a 11.11.11.X addresses that is
configured on the 2.2.10-ac12 box.  It works fine on system with kernel
2.0.37 though.  Everything also works great when I connect to a 10.10.10.X
address from a modem connection though 10.10.10.10 (the modem rack).
There are no other routing problems.

After trying to connect to a 11.11.11.X address confiured on the 2.2.10-ac12
system, from a modem, I look at the arp cache and see this:

  modem2.box.net (10.10.10.12) at <incomplete> on eth0
  modem1.box.net (10.10.10.11) at <incomplete> on eth0

  mailstuff.box.net (10.10.10.4) at 00:40:05:43:A2:81 [ether] on eth0
  modem3.box.net (10.10.10.13) at 00:C0:05:04:2D:91 [ether] on eth0

It shows modems connecting to 11.11.11.X addresses do not get a proper
arp entry.  modem3.box.net however connected to a 10.10.10.X address and
works great.  I currently add the arp entries manually like this:

  arp -s 10.10.10.11 "00:c0:05:04:2d:91"
  arp -s 10.10.10.12 "00:c0:05:04:2d:91"
  ...

and all is well.  Is there some easy way to not have to add the arp
entries?  Thanks, Mark
