Subject: router problem
Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 14:29:54 -0400

Dear experts;

I think this problem is common, but I do not how to do it.

We have two LANs (A: 206.183.106.x, B: 206.183.107.x). which are connected
by Cisco 2501 router and T1 phone line. One Linux machine is installed in
LAN A as firewall and gateway to connect to Internet. By using masquing
function we have made Internet connection to everyone in LAN A. But we have
difficulty to expand internet connection to LAN B.

On the LAN B Win95 machine, the first gateway address is router IP address
in LAN B and second gateway address is Linux address in LAN A. However, I'm
only able to ping the server in LAN A from the Win95 machine in LAN B, not
the Linux gateway. Is the problem coming from the router setting?

Any help is true appreciated.

Randy

Download the source code for knfsd, the package that supplies rpc.mountd
and
rpc.nfsd. In the source tree for knfsd, you will see a file named TODO,
which
indicates that Version 3 NFS support is a desired feature to be added but
which
is not yet in place. Fortunately, we can work around it for static mounts,
at least,
on the SGI client side, as my previous posting showed.

This is a repost.

Does anybody know why I can no longer serve files to SGi 's since I
upgraded
to RedHat 6.0 ? I tried several different kernels, I suspect it is the
software.

This is what I get in /var /log/messages when I try to mount Linux files

from an SGi :

Thanks,

If the drivers are on a windows-formatted disk, you can use mtools (man
mtools) to access them

Alternatively, I think
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
or
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

would work and give you access to the drive. I'm not for sure, though --
I can't use floppies in my system due to bad hardware.

both conf.modules and lilo.conf. What different steps, if any, are needed
when you want to install a 2nd NIC that is a different type/model? -m

Actually, 'ping'ing one's own address does not indicate that the card is
working fine, since if you ping your own address, then the packet never went
out to the card. Here's a demonstration:

bash$ /sbin/ifconfig eth0

bash$ ping -c 10 192.168.1.1

You use the program ipchains, which controls the routing... IP
masquerading is something you can do by using ipchains...

Yep, install ipchains. Then add these lines into the
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file.

ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
insmod ip_masq_ftp

You need ipv4 enabled in the kernel, that allows the forwarding.

In the WinBox set up the TCP/IP on the NIC
with www.xxx.yyy.zzz your IP address for the WinBox (static IP)
set Gateway to the IP of the linuxbox
set WINS on and point it to linuxbox IP
Set DNS to point to your ISP's DNS addresses (usually two) put the
name of the winbox in the host slot.

set your browser to connect vial local lan (you will still be able to
use a modem on the winbox, this does not interfere with Win dialup)

that should do it......THEN read NET-3HOWTO IPchainsHOWTO :)

Hello,

First off I want to thank all the people who anser posts on this group.
You guys ROCK. Now I just have a quick question about setting up a LAN
with IP-Masquerading. I have a LINUX that I plan to use as the
"gateway" (or masq-gate...i dont what exactly to call it) with the
actual IP address. I will be using a cable modem connection to access
the internet.

Do I need to have 2 ethernet cards installed in the masq-gate machine or
can I get by with just the one?

I was hoping I could just put all the machines on the one HUB and
connect the uplink to the cable rather than connecting the cable to one
ethernet card and the rest of the LAN to the other card. Please let me
know. I am fairly new to LINUX, but I am really looking forward to
setting up my apartment. Thanks.

Tik still works, although when I started it last night, my "buddy list" was

Yes, it's called Linux :-). Unfortunately actually setting things
up can be, ah, "a bit obscure" even if you think you have a good
idea of how it should all work. Then again, today I came across
http://www.ittc.ukans.edu/~rsarav/howto/ which should give you
enough to get something not too basic working.

RedHat distributes both KDE and Gnome. You'll find KDE on the CD-ROM!

I am using two linux servers running pppd over a leased line connecting two

and @ client end RTS goes down randomsly or after some time with the
following messages

pppd[623]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
pppd[623]: local IP address 233.129.263.5
pppd[623]: remote IP address 233.129.263.6
pppd[623]: Compression enabled
pppd[623]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
pppd[623]: Modem hangup
pppd[623]: Connection terminated.
pppd[623]: Failed to open /dev/ttyS1: Interrupted system
call
pppd[623]: Exit.
pppd[631]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0

The system is running on LRP Kernel 2.0.36 with ppp version 2.2/ ppp
