All three of my RH 6.0 installations were done via FTP. I find they work
beautifully.

I got a list of RH mirror site from the RH website

http://www.redhat.com/mirrors.html

and tried a couple of different sites and settled on the ftp.cdrom.com and
ftp.tux.org sites. BTW, this list will give you the path to the redhat
"general" directory. You need to add "/redhat-6.0/i386" to the end of the
path to get the installation to work correctly.

There are a number of graphical IMAP clients out there. Balsa, K-Mail (not the
KDE app), Mahogony, TKRat, Postillion, and XFMail are all IMAP capable. There
are probably more. Take a look at the friendly Linux software search engine
near you. Either www.freshmeat.net or www.linuxberg.com should be able to
point you to these and others. If you're really picky about user interfaces,
Balsa (the GNOME mailer) or Postillion (a NeXTMail clone) would probably be
your best bets. XFMail is a good "power user" choice. It was the only mailer
capable of handling multiple IMAP servers the last time I looked.

I used to use that card with RedHat 5.1, 5.2 and 6.0.
I could not get it to work at IRQ3 and 300.
I used IRQ 11 and base 300. That always worked well.
I used a DOS boot floppy and the intel SoftSet utility to preset the
card. The Softset util is available at www.intel.com

There have been many reports of the MSO's failing to configure the
modems to use two IP's at the same time. Your trouble sounds at lot
like the other reports. Call and have them reconfigure the modem.

Subject: IP MASQ/default gateway
Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 02:11:25 -0500

I'm running Red Hat 5.2 out of the box on a system with two ne2000
cards; one (eth1) is connected to my local network (192.168.2.0/24) the
other (eth0) is connected to an ADSL modem.
I have almost everything working; dhcpc on eth0, dhcpd on eth1,
masquerading, etc., etc.
The problem I can't find a solution to is setting the default gateway.
netstat -rn gives:

0.0.0.0 192.168.2.1 0.0.0.0 UG 1500 0 0 eth1

Now the NET-3-HOWTO says to do this:

     # Default route to the rest of the internet.
     route add default ppp0

but this dosen't work (for me). I have to manually enter:

route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx eth0

Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address assigned to eth0 by th ISP. now
everything works.

How can I automate the setting of the default gateway?

P.S as soom as I figure this out, I'm going to write "Linux/IP MASQ/DSL
for dummies". I figure there's a lot of them like me trying to do this!

You don't need any special drivers for the SN2000. It's NE2000 compatible.
I have two of them at home runing in Linux machines.

First of all you have to load the correct module. For the D-Link DFE-530TX
it's called "via-rhine". Use Linuxconf as root and there you'll find a tab
where you can insert this value among with others. It's a drop down box and
via-rhine isn't there, just type it in.

Do a reboot (just to be sure) and type "dmesg". Then you'll see whether the
card was initialized correctly....

I can't remember the exact details but I think your problem is related to
using encrypted passwords instead of plain text. If you have a simple home
network where security isn't a massive issue you can install a fix to
windows 98. Someone might post it here ? If not give me another shout and
I'll dig it out.

Check your reverse DNS. I'm guessing the tcpwrapper program is trying
to translate the IP address into a name. You might want to try running
"nslookup x.x.x.x" on the IP address to see if it is name service
slowing you down.

That's very strange and also FUD. Networking and browsing is much faster in

Subject: Crossover RJ45 ethernet cables - Re: Cable problem?
Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 09:14:45 GMT

Look at the colour of the insulation on the wires in the two plug ends -
a normal cable is just wired 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 6-6 (others not used)

For a cross-over, the wiring is: 1-3, 2-6, 3-1, 6-2

If you are looking at the end of the plug, with the cable trailing away
from you, and have the locking tag on the top, then the pin numbers go 1
to 8 from left to right.

Note that (for some unbelievably stupid reason) the wiring of pins for
UTP ethernet is not symmetrical, otherwise you could make a 10BaseT
crossover from flat cable just by tuning one end over. But you can't.
Sigh :-(

Just for some FYI. There are Microsoft employees that run Linux in fact. I
found this out after talking to a employee who works there that did video
driver development for Windows 3.0 (or was it 3.1; don't remember what version
exactly). Yes though, they do run some Linux Box's.

Btw, where's Elmer when you need some FUD :)

suggest you get a good book on Linux and read up on that process there,

Yeah I just setup the proxy myself in one try and it worked beautifully. I'm
a total newbie when it comes to linux, but it was fairly simple.
To answer your original question, you need 3 nic's in total.
1 for the win box
2 for the lin box : 1 for the cable modem
1 to connect to the nic in the winbox.

and as Frank mentioned, they are fairly cheap now-a-days. I'm sure you got a
nic with the cablemodem so at least all you have to buy is 2. but a word of
advice here. you should make sure that the nic you are going to use on your
linux box is supported. I had a real hard time getting my nic to work on it.
when I did, everything was candy.

Does the fax server have to be on the linux system? Faxworks for OS/2
will do what you want. With Faxworks, you print to the Faxworks
"printer". This printer can be shared across the network to other
systems. I've used it to fax from linux. It requires no driver on
any other system. Also, Keller Group (the developer) has a
network version.

Try a different NFS mount.  I use this in a 2.0.37 (PII) <-> 2.0.34

Unfortunately the 2.2.x kernels seem to crash with heavy NFS loads.
I've tried 2.2.5, 2.2.7, 2.2.9, 2.2.10 and a few of the ac patches, all
with the same results. File handles unable to get process slots and
eventually an OOPS or the kernel simply 'goes away'. THis is with 8
simultaneous threads writing through an Alteon Gigabit, same mount
parameters as above.

Great performance under light loads. ~25MB/s
