In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
I'm no SUSE expert, and if advice in this newsgroup doesn't
help you might want to contact SUSE or their own message
list. But it looks to me as if you've set up masquerading
over the wrong device. Look in the MASQ section and you
have the masqueraded device as eth0. I don't know what
SUSEconfig does with this information but you might try
changing that to ippp0 or whatever the name of the device
that connects to the Internet is. THere is also a section
in that config file (which I've deleted from this message) that
mentions applying Dynamic_IP - I think you want that for diald
to work properly. Also from windows 95 on
your net you should try pinging some known devices on the
Internet using IP numbers instead of names, such as 154.19.254.81
to narrow down the problems to name server or routing. If a windows95
ping to an IP address works, your routing is working, and
if a ping to metalab.unc.edu doesn't work, then you don't have the
windows95 machine set up with a correct DNS nameserver.
At some point you might try
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
and make sure that it says 1. If not adding
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
would make sure that ip-forwarding (routing) is turned on in
the kernel.
Posting the output of 'ifconfig' and 'route -n ' might help
if you still don't succeed.

If you insist on (but its a lot more work and not to stable) using the
NT as the www interface you will need to install one of the proxies,
Sygage, Wingate etc. More $$$ and lots of aspirin.
Best way and simplest at your stage, since you already have them
networked, is to make the linuxbox you gateway. Install ipchains
(probably already is). Read the ipchainsHOWTO, in it you will find a
simple 3 line setup to do the masqing/firewall (you can tweek it
later). Also in order to utilize ftp, CuSeeMe, RealAudio, you will
have to do something like the following::
insmod ip_masq_ftp
That will get both boxes on line, nothing to do but have the linuxbox
dialup and then on you NT box set IE or Netscape to connect on local
LAN (this will not affect the NT's continued use of its own dialup.
The browsers FTP progs etc simply will look at both locations, local
modem & LAN for a connect.)
Firewall, Masquerade, ipchain HOWTO's are the keys here.

Subject: PLIP does not work with 2.2.xx kernels
Date: 16 Aug 1999 13:43:39 GMT
I have read several posts regarding problems with plip using
2.2.xx kernels. I am having the same problems. Let me summarize
the common symptoms.
1. 2.0.xx kernels work fine;
2. 2.2.5-22 (stock RedHat 6.0 kernel) cannot load the plip.o
module, complaining about some unresolved symbols;
3. Later 2.2.xx kernels (specifically 2.2.11), when compiled
with plip and parport modules, but WITHOUT lp support, complains
about "device or resource busy." "cat /proc/devices" shows something
like,
Character devices:
1 mem
2 pty
3 ttyp
4 tty0
5 ptmx
7 vcs
10 misc
14 sound
128 ptm
136 pts
Block devices:
2 fd
3 ide0
ie, there is no lp device (thus shouldn't be any conflict). Also
note that the io and irq settings are all standard, as evident by
the fact that 2.0.xx kernels work fine.
I think there is something wrong with the 2.2.xx kernels for the plip
support. Can anyone help?

No, I am not using the driver from the kernel, that one did not work, I
use the "newest" driver as referred by Readtek's web site, compiled and
replaced the module that come with RH6.0, still no luck.
Strange is, the module loaded fine and [OK] is told when booting,
however, the interface is not working as reported.
Tracing the errors involving "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily
unavailable" looks like it's is some kind of PCI related driver errors, though.
Thanks anyway,
Edwin

You should change the string in the smb.conf file where it says ??? = USER
(I can't remember the string name) to SHARED. Then you will not be asked for
password.
Remember to uncomment the swat line in the inetd.conf file and send HUP to
it. The you can configure SAMBA from a browser on your windows machine.

I would be truly grateful to anyone that can give me a clue on how to get
this ethernet card to work.
I've read all the how-to's and as far as I can figure out I think it is a
ne2000 compatible card. I've tried loading the 'ne' kernel module at every
io address from 100 to 390 and it doesn't find the card. (Being an ISA card
autoprobe is not an option)
I've heard of a program called scanport but can't find it. IBM offer a SCO
UNIX driver for this card but that's about all I've been able to find out
from them.
If anyone knows anything about this card or possible solutions to my problem
I'd be more than pleased to hear from you, in fact I'll buy you a beer !
Some of the numbers on the NIC are: 25H6106, CX8920-XQ1 EP, 04H6550.

Is there a way to have the smbpasswd file in sync with the passwd file. I
would like to be able to add a user and have the smbpasswd file be
updated. If this is not possible, how do I simply add a new user to the
smbpasswd file without recopying the passwd file over the smbpasswd file I
already have.
Thanks in advance,

192.168.3.1 (our router) - 192.168.1.254

Guys-
Thanks for the feedback. I am glad that I am not the only one out there
that is having this problem. I have no power saving stuff running. I
am running on a Compaq 3000 (dual P3/500) server. since the last post,
I have reloaded the module for the NIC. It stayed up for about 5 hours,
and then dropped off of the network again. I am also starting to think
that it is something in RH6. This is driving me nuts! I am considering
starting from scratch. The server did not have any problems for the
first week of running it. The only change that I made to it was the
monitor information using Xconfigurator, but I wouldn't think that that
would be causing these problems.

Hey all, I'm trying to setup an FTP server using NCFTPD. I got everything
going, but I'm having trouble setting up users. I Use NCFTPD_PASSWD to
create users but how do I set it up where user "Joe" can access one
directory and user "Bob" can't?
Like in my /home/ftp main directory, I have a directory named "test". I
want to set it up where Joe can access it but Bob can't. I have been
searching all over the net and I can't find any specific info on how to do
this, plus what are the UID and GID numbers you have to put in for each
user??
Any kind of help to shed some light on this would be MUCH appreciated!
Thanks, Neel

If you have RH6, and you have the space on your hard drive (ie 700+mb, not
couting swap), I would do a full install, if you haven't already done so.
But now, onto your samba question.
To get started, you will need to do one of two things: 1)Manually edit
the smb.conf file, or 2) run linuxconf. If you do option #2 (highly
recomended), go to the networking->server tasks->samba file server. Under
this tab you will be able to set your domain, password options, home dirs,
printer, and sharing for your Linux machine. Hope this is a good starter!

Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 15:35:55 GMT
Hi,
how should I close a socket that is listening for a connection with the
listen system call ? If I use shutdown (sd,2), the socket is still in
the listen status indicated by netstat. If I use close(sd), the socket
is freed, but sometimes it is in a CLOSE status (_not_ CLOSED!). The
manpage doesn't mention the CLOSE status. What does this status mean
and is the descriptor freed or will I run out of descriptors after some
time? The state doesn't seem to have a timeout, and there is no one
connected to it on the other side. After 1 hour, it still was in the
close state. I use the 2.2 Kernel and there has been a question about
the CLOSE state earlier in this newsgroup, but no answer.
