Subject: Reading PCI CSR registers
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 07:18:41 GMT
I'm trying to read the card-specific configuration space registers of
my DE41x5 Ethernet card. The program 'lspci' is telling me where the
I/O and Memory spaces are mapped. But the program 'setpci' appears to
only accept PCI configuration space registers. I've tried using a
command such as
dd if=/dev/port skip=60544 bs=1 count=12 | xxd -g 4
but the results don't appear to be correct.
Are there any tools where I can read any IO port and any physical
memory address?
Thanks.

The answer, after much experimentation with 3 3c509's, appears to be that there
is _no way_ to control which 3c509 is allocated to eth0. It will always be the
one with the lowest ethernet address.

Hi
I have been encountering a similar phenomenon (2.0.31 & 3Com etherlinx):
Try pinging around a bit on your network, then have a look at the Linux arp
table, you might find a load of entries with the C (Complete entry) flag,
but not the M (perManent entry). So you could try copying the entries
manually, as permanents... My guess is that the automatically generated
(somehow generated by pinging) arps get forgotten by the cache pretty soon.
Thats just a guess though, I am pretty new to the game!

Try append="ether=10,0x300,eth0 ether=11,0x220,eth1" in
/etc/lilo.conf assuming you've already taken care of any isapnp and
setting real IRQ/port addresses on the cards.
They should show up in pnpdump and /proc. If I run pnpdump with the

Date: 17 Aug 1999 02:06:05 -0500
Hello Everyone
I am trying to properly connect to my Windows NT ISP.
I have my modem configured and dialing out and connecting when I run
minicom. I am testing and running everyting manually from the root.
I am using Red Hat 5.2 Linux ver 2.0.36
When I connect I get my
login
password prompt.
I enter my login and password, then
I issue a Ctrl A Q then I start pppd. I then get
the proper responsed )(*&(((){}}{}{}....
but that is as far as I can get.
I can not ping the ISP, so I know I have something wrong. I am using
PAP, which is what my ISP told me to use.
My question is, do I need to do something special to connect to a Win
NT ISP such as using MS PAP or whatever?
Please respond to this newsgroup.

Subject: IP forwarding in 2.0.31
Date: 17 Aug 1999 07:57:04 GMT
Hi folks
I have an IP forwarding problem (I *think*) in an old 2.0.31 kernel. I am
using it because a previous project built a "Wide Area Link Emulator"
(WALE) traffic shaper/bandwidth limiter into it.
It is for an IP telephony project - investigating the effects of a poor
network on the H.323 protocol suite.
I have set up the following in the laboratory:
Dual Homed
Host Linux 2.0.31 router
Host
Windoze eth1 eth0
Windoze
192.168.1.2--------192.168.1.4 192.168.1.1---------192.168.1.3
ether
ether
IP Number HWaddress Card
192.168.1.2 00:10:4b:42:cd:ec 3Com905 removable on the pci
192.168.1.4 00:c0:4f:4b:9f:7b 3Com905 on the motherboard*
192.168.1.1 00:60:97:2e:27:c3 3Com595 removable on the pci
192.168.1.3 00:c0:4f:c9:83:e8 3Com** on the motherboard
* it's a 905, but I needed the up-to-the-minute driver from Donald Becker
to run it, so maybe its a slightly different chipset or sthg
** I cant remember what that one is but it's a good one, and works fine.
A while ago, I got a RH6 2.2.5 kernel routing properly, so I became
familiar with the ins & outs of the routing & arp table.
The problem with this 2.0.31 kernel is that it will not forward packets
across from 192.168.1.4 --> 192.168.1.1 and vice versa.
>From 192.168.1.2 (Windoze) can ping 192.168.1.4 but no further
>From 192.168.1.3 (Windoze) I can ping 192.168.1.1 but no further
>From the router shell I can ping everything. (when its all set up - see
below)
so my goal is to get a ping from 192.168.1.3 to get across to 192.168.1.2 &
vice versa - then I can run MS Netmeeting on the hosts, and control the QoS
with the bandwidth limiter on the router kernel. I have ipv4 going, and
also ip_forward seems to be running (at least its echoing 1).
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I'm not doing at all to get
this working! please! This project's got to be finished this week!!
Also, I am a bit perplexed (& vy interested!) by this: I do not actually
need to do any arp entries on the router:
After booting, I can ping eth0. of course. (that's all I can reach though)
entering the route to 192.168.1.3 with #route add -host 192.168.1.3 dev
eth0
then I can ping 192.168.1.3
I have to insmod the latest 3c59x.o driver for eth1, and ifconfig it up,
and ifconfig its address to 192.168.1.4 (this is all OK)
But I cannot ping 192.168.1.4 yet!
entering a route to 192.168.1.4 with #route add -host 192.168.1.4 dev eth1
only *then* I can ping it (192.168.1.4)
And of course setting up a route to 192.168.1.2 with
#route add -host 192.168.1.2 dev eth1
allows me to reach that one (192.168.1.2)!!!
the system seems to take quite a while for the first ping to go through -
like it is having a bit of trouble looking up the hardware address of the
NICs.
but it seems to enter the right arp settings itself - although they are not
flagged "permanent". - and it "forgets" them after a while but a ping
restores them again....
Anyone that can explain this, I would be interested!
But my real cry for help is how to get IP forwarding running properly on
this kernel!!! please! anyone!! help!
I'd be glad to help anyone with any other queries, I have a *bit* of
experience on routing!
Thanks
Tris (pretty much still a newbie :-< )
ps - The problem is not caused by the WALE modifications on the 2.0.31
kernel - I have tried to do the same thing on a RH5.2 kernel v2.0.36 with
no modifications, and get the same problems. I *think* the problem is just
something I am not configuring right in the kernel, but I am pretty lost
for what it is!

...a little hard to answer, since Compaq does not list a "Deskpro 5133" on their
website, so it is impossible to determine, from that source, what the NIC really
is. Is this a new or used PC? If new, the sales person should be able to get
you tech specs on the NIC (who's chip it's built around). In the worst case,
you need to know if you can disable it and use a (PCI?, EISA?, VLB?, ISA?) card
in the PC. If you can use a PCI, I've had great success with linksys cards (and
d-link) which are bargain-priced and have tested out well in "real-world"
applications on servers and workstations.
Good luck!

It seems to me that you are trying to start your NFS services before you
start you network services. Check your order of startup and see if that

Subject: DSL IP-address question
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 07:25:34 GMT
I have been trying to configure my DSL connection to work under
LINUX. I am using Caldera 2.2. I have configured my Cisco 675
modem so that it is using DHCP and NAT and is also configured not
to use the DOH (dial on hookup) stuff that is used under windows.
My connection works fine under windows95 and i am quite pleased with
it. However, i cannot get it to work under LINUX.
I am using the windows command "winipcfg" to give me all of my network
information. From this command i get my; IP-address, subnet mask,
default gateway, and DHCP server information.
Are these numbers correct to use in linux?
I recently installed Caldera 2.2 and i had no problem installing my
network card. It seems like my problem is that i am using the wrong
IP-address.
Is there a convenient way to find your IP settings under windows so
that you can use this information in LINUX?

Hi Everyone!
I am desperately looking for help in the following situation:
SITUATION: There are 2 linux servers (Server_1 i Server_2), they both
have RedHat 6.0, kernel 2.2.10 and Sendmail 8.9.3 r.10, they work in the
same domain: my.domain.foo.com. Server_1 receives e-mail, if user does

user does not exist on this server (Server_2), e-mail is rejected to

A BIG PROBLEM: It IS possible to send e-mail to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] from Server_1. But when I want to
send e-mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] from Server_2,
Server_2 can not find such a user on his disk, so it rejects it. The
only possible solution (now) is to send e-mail from Server_2 to user on
Server 1 addressing like this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] but it's NOT a solution,
don't you agree? Sending e-mails locally works great.

Hmmm. That's kind of odd. First off the CALL_REQUEST and CALL_REPLY are
both going in the same direction. (I'll have to check and see if I botched
the log messages :)
What does "cat /proc/net/ip_masquerade" show? Is there a GRE masq entry?
You might want to make sure you're on the current version of the patch (I
made a minor change this weekend and released the "final" version of
2.2.10).

Monte,
Thanks for the info. You are cool man.
Now I can use masquerading and browse the
web, send and retrieve mail and news
and ftp. It's indeed done wonders.
Anyway I'm tweaking it more to optimize.

Hello,
i have a Linux box with RH 6.0 configured with a Win95 client on a local
network.
192.168.0.1 is the Linux box and 192.168.0.2 is the Winn95 client.
I have set up the PPP connection and it works, i get connected to my ISP
with dynamic IP-addresses from outside. The defaultroute is also working.
The gateway is ok if i look with route -h at ppp0.
Now the problems, i dont get any replays when i ping from my w95 client. Not
even if i use real IP addresses, i can see on the modem that someting is
going out but not coming in. I am not sure about the DNS names. My ISP give
me 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 could that be ok? If i look on the settings for the
network in Linuxconfig for IP forwarding i can se it is enabled, is that
enough to forward packets? I think i should use ipchains but not how. I
also think there is a problem with my ipchains command because when i trying
to use it i get 'no command' from bash.
One other thing about the PPP connection, when i look into my log file i can
see three errors like,
'cant load module modprobe compress 2X' or something similar, what does that
mean?
Stilla a newbie :-)
