Subject: Which Network Cards
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 14:42:19 -0700
*I have been thinking of installing network cards in my two computers.
One being a linux box and the other with Windose95. I have no experience
or knowledge of network cards. What type of cards should I be looking
for? Would prefer the cheapest cards that would do the job. Manufacturer
and model numbers would be helpful. Also how the cards are hooked up -
cable, wire, etc. Any other info appreciated.

We are proudly represent our shareware programm Remote Administrator.
www.mtu-net.ru/radmin
Don't think that we have no visitors on our site and chasing for them. There
more than hundred of them every day, we have sold already a lot of copies,
some corporative users have purchased RAdmin. We have no bugs, no bad
reports, nothing distressing at all. So, we are prosperous but we need more.
Just take a look at RAdmin, being displeased you can send us as bad reply as
you like.
RAdmin.is shareware program. There are some rather well-known analogs of
RAdmin like VNC, PCanywhere, but RAdmin allows to get much faster
connection. Moreover, it costs only $25.
Summing up, I'd like to mention that Radmin is a remote access system, which
enables to work on the remote computer, from your own computer like
PCanywhere does,but with REALTIME speed.
Full information can be found on our site www.mtu-net.ru/radmin .
I hope very much that you will not consider this letter as spum or something
unserious. We are eager to collaborate with you and your reply will be very
welcome.

Hello all,
Do you know if it's possible to assign a single IP address on a multi-homed
system (like a Cisco router)? I need to setup a firewall and further
subnetting isn't my first choice.

I've been dialing in to my ISP as well as my univ server thru Linux & found
in /var/log/messages some lines that go :
can't locate module ppp-compress-#
where # is some number.
I was not able to log on to my ISP (which uses PAP), but could with my univ
(uses txt script).
does anybody know what module is it reporting about? I'm using RH6.0 with
pppd 2.3. I've neva come across such errors when using RH5.2

Subject: Linux PPP dialup problem to Ascend Modems
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 23:02:00 +0100
Hi there ppl,
Dunno if I'm posting this query to the correct newsgroup, but here goes
anyway. I work for an ISP and we have a 2 ascend MAX (version 7.1) modems
for our customers to dial up to (authenticating with radiusd). Users who
are running macs and windows have no problem at all at dialling up - that is
to say, they can dial, connect to our modems and they are successfully
assigned a dynamic IP from a specified pool (that we choose).
However, linux seems to be a problem. I have a redhat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36)
machine, which is masquerading my LAN here at home onto the net. When I
dial up to these Ascend modems, linux/the ascend modems appear to do
something rather odd (nothing I've ever seen before). Linux basically says
to the ascend modems "I don't care what IP address you are gonna give me...
I want this one" - my linux box seems to tell the ascend modems what IP it
wants, and I end up connecting to the ascend modems with my LAN IP address
(192.168.168.10).
Linux is not faking this - if I type ifconfig in linux after typing "ifup
ppp0", I get my lo interface (which is fine), my eth0 interface (which is IP
address 192.168.168.10) and my ppp0 interface which has IP address
192.168.168.10 also - which is NOT correct!!! I should have been assigned
an IP address from the ascend IP pool!! Also, if I then proceed to login to
the ascend boxes, and do a "show users", the ascend modems list me with IP
address 192.168.168.10 !!!! And to top it all off, if I change the ppp0
logon script so that I set a specific IP address when dialling to the
modems, I can connect with ANY ip address I like!
The only way that I can get my linux box to dial with a correct IP is when I
shutdown ALL other interfaces on the machine (lo and eth0) and remove all
references of the IP 192.168.168.10 from the /etc/hosts file on my linux
box.
So, the question is, does anyone know what this is? And how to fix it? It
can't be a problem with the linux box because I have accounts with other
ISPs and my linux box dials up fine - it just seems to a specific problem
with the ascend modems at the ISP I work at.
This is a potentially serious problem since anyone of our customers with
linux could potentially dial up with ANY IP address they like to our
modems - eg, dialup with the SAME ip as our smtp server and disrupt mail
transfers etc etc etc.. They also have the potential to dial up with, for
example, the same IP address as another website on the net (eg.
www.linux.org), and then all our users, and everyone on the local network
who try to visit that site reach the user who is dialled up with that IP,
not the "real" machine which is on the net (beyond our local network).
I would appreciate if any one has any ideas regarding this matter and look
forward to hearing from you.
Cheers;
Mark.

Subject: tn3270 questions; need help
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (J. Otto Tennant)
Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 00:11:52 GMT
This is a question about tn3270 in general, not about the particular
operating system it is running on.
There is a central computer and several remote terminals. (They
happen to be IBM 3101s, but they could be anything, even an ADM-3a.)
The remote terminals are connected to a "terminal server" which
has an IP address (192.168.10.2, just to be definite.) The several
remote terminals respond to ports 2000, 2001, 2002, and so on as
telnet sessions.
When I boot up the central computer, I want to treat these remote
terminals as 3270s and splash a legacy logon screen to them.
I also need to hook them up to a daemon which receives requests,
processes them, and responds to them.
I have exhausted my knowledge of networking, although I'm fairly
certain the solution must be straightforward.
In principle, if I could write:
tn3270 host port <192.168.10.2:2000 >192.168.10.2:2000
it would work like magic (I think).
What I need to do is associate a pty with the remote IP/port.
(The terminal server also provides ports 3000, 3001, etc. which
are more "raw" than a telnet port, but I've forgotten the name
of the service.)
I'm not certain I have explained the problem well enough for
anyone to comment.

You don't. OSS/Lite is included in the Linux kernel, or you can get the
ALSA drivers as a patch (which will go in the kernel proper at some
point).
Download a kernel and recompile it to include support for your card. Read
the HOWTOs on metalab to find out how to do this. Alternatively, if you
are running RedHat it's even easier - just type sndconfig, it will figure
out what module to load. You should not need the commercial version of OSS
to use your sound card.

You don't seem to get this whole Linux/Free Software/Open Source thing, do
you... we don't need cracks, we don't need warez... we don't need to steal
from software companies, because here, if it doesn't exist, we make it
ourselves.
Oh yes, and cross posting questions about "cracking" to every Linux
newsgroup on the planet is *not* the best way to win friends and influence
people.

Firewall implies a network. If you don't want to do this via Ethernet, you
could probably do it w/a null modem cable and a PPP connection between the
two comupters, but who would choose this over getting a couple of $10
ethernet cards and a crossover cable?
You will need TCP/IP, so get another CD if you're using Windows.

Hi;
I've got Linux running with MediaOne's cablemodem. It was a bit of a
battle getting it working correctly, but I finally did. There were a
couple of things that were key for my setup:
1. Eliminating PnP mode on the modem
2. Configuring the NIC properly under Linux.
3. Getting a functional dhcp client that works with MediaOne.
Once you get closer, send another post or email and I can go into greater
details. My H/W is a AST Pentium 200 w/64 megs RAM and a 3c509B card.
Cable modem is whatever Mediaone supplied - looks like it says
"Cybersurfer Wave" on it.

Since Tornado season isn't over yet this year we're having power
failures
often and I get that a bit regularly but Linux always give a check on
the disk on boot when that happens. I don't understand why yours
doesn't.
Perhaps you messed up the startup stuff.
Winblows 95 will get upset as well.
As for who is the most robust, I had to reinstall Winblows 98 after the
last storm with Win 98 running before the power failure, not Linux.

I sent the message below to someone on another news group today but it works
here, too.
MS Proxy Server 2.0 has Socks Proxy for non-Windows hosts. MS uses
SOCKS ver. 4.3a.
The MS SOCKS proxy will support Telnet, FTP, HTTP, and Gopher. It will not
support apps that use UDP - Real Audio, VDOLive, MS Netshow, Quake, .....
other fun stuff. The Winsock Proxy does do UDP.
More info on SOCKS - www.socks.nec.com
www.socks.nec.com/socks4.protocol
There are also permissions and other configuration required on the Proxy
Server 2.0.
HTH, but probably not quite what you wanted to hear.

Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 00:38:48 GMT
I'm setting up a firewall with slack4. I seem to remember (and my notes
indicate) that on an earlier version of slackware, the make config process gave
me the opportunity to answer Y/n to:
IP: Drop source routed frames (CONFIG_IP_NOSR)?
The i386/defconfig file that comes with the new distro does not seem to have
this question in it.
Since dropping source-routed frames is a basic step for building a packet
filter, can anyone shed some light on this?
Since I can't be sure that source routed frames are dropped is there a way that
I can determine what's actually happening?
TIA, and feel free to reply via e-mail.
Cheers!

I Am having problems getting my modem to establish a ppp connection to my
ISP. I am using a Modemblaster D5602. I initially had problems getting
the modem and the sound card (an AWE64 ) to coexist on the same machine. I
would be able to dial, right after installing RH 6.0, but as soon as I ran
Soundconfig (which also would list my modem as the sound card) I would
have no sound and no modem.. It was only recently that I looked at
isapnp.conf and found that they were vying for the same resources. I have
been able to get the sound working, but the MIDI isn't currently. However,
My main problem is with getting my net connection working. Minicom reports
that I am offline, untill I try to dial, in which it complains taht I am
online and must disconnect first. In addidtion, I am running gnome, but I
tried using the kppp utility in order to try getting the connection up.
However, it complains that the modem is busy. I tried the ppp-linux.html,
and the pppd failed because of an Input/Output error... Does anyone have
any clue as to what is going on here?
thanks,
tony
