Not even.

for a in /dev/hd[a-z][1-9] /sd[a-z][1-9]; do mke2fs $a; done

Produces an unstoppably reliable result. Or perhaps even:

for a in /dev/hd[a-z][1-9] /sd[a-z][1-9]; do mkdosfs $a; done

Since we don't want those folks using Linux anyway, why not send
them back to Microsnot land? :)

Don't know if you got any answers that you needed, but a simple solution is
to do a nfs loopback mount. you mount the directory you want where you want
it. Need more info? give me a mail.

All,

Thanx for you help, it appears to be my kernel although I did compile
PPP support in it. I backed off to an earlier compile of the same release
and it appears to be working fine.

Thanx again,

have a look in srm.conf. You'll find this :

======
# UserDir: The name of the directory which is appended onto a user's
home
# directory if a ~user request is recieved.

UserDir public_html
======

This means that /home/bill/public_html is the directory apache is going
to look into if http://whatever.com/~bill is called.

Hope it helps

NIck,

I think that elite.net uses PAP for authentication, so ther are some
instructions which I've sent other users. Put in the correct info for
your isp, like the Primary DNS server, which is 205.199.220.1 and the
Secondary which is 206.170.84.1 All of the connect numbers, except for
Chowchilla seem to be 209 area code, so you know if you need the 1-area
code etc for connecting or not. After or before connecting, configure
your netscape browser, by going into preferences, and use mail.elite.net
for both the POP and SMTP servers. Then, use news.elite.net for the
news server, and of course, user what ever you use for the user info.

Write back and let me know how it went <G>
here goes:

Here's how I configured my KPPP to work for Mindspring.com It does
also use PAP for authentication. Log on to your system as root. Start
x going. This is assuming that you're using KDE in SuSE 6.1, and that
you installed PPP support when installing the whole system.

In KDE click on the K button, go down to Internet, click, select
Kppp. The dialog box will come up, and you can type in your login ID.
Then click on Setup on the bottom row of buttons.

Onthe next dialog which pops up, select accounts. click on new.
On the next dialog box, which is DIAL, type in connection name, like
Elite or something similar , next type in local phone number to dial,
and for authenication
type, select PAP. You might also check off the store password option.
On my system, I left blank the other three boxes (not needed) and didn't
use any "Arguments".
Next tab - IP, selected Dynamic IP. Left the other check boxes
unchecked.
Next tab - DNS, typed in Mindspring.com Next, typed in the DNS IP
address into the DNS IP address box, then clicked ADD. Did this for
the second DNS Ip address for mindspring. I left the other check boxes
unchecked.
Next tab - Gateway, Default Gateway is checked and checkmark on assign
the default gateway route to this gateway.
Next tab - Login Script, didn't use. Mindspring ISP doesn't use any
scripts for login.
Next tab - Accounting - Left blank. I will know about what my usage
is, and it is unlimmited anyway.
Clicked OK

Select Device tab - Make sure /dev/modem is selected
I use a checkmark on Lock File. no other changes made.
Next tab - Modem, clicked on Query Modem, to make sure I got a response
to modem. This makes sure system can talk to modem.
Next tab - PPP check mark on show clock on caption
check mark on disconnect on X-server shutdown
check mark on minimize window on connect.
Click on OK
Typed password on main dialog box, and attempted to connect.

On my system, the first time I attempted to connect, it errored out. I
then closed Kppp, and immediately went to start menu and selected Kppp
again. This time it connected like a champ. Fired up the browser and
then set the correct parameters in the Netscape preferences.

On my system, every time I fire up X windows, the first attempt at using
Kppp errors out, but I then immediately close Kppp and fire it up
again. It works everytime after that, even all day long, hanging up and
then later reconnecting, as long as I don't shut down X. If I do, Kppp
will error out on the first attempt, again, but I then merely close it,
and click it again, and then it will work. If I leave the computer
booted and X running for days, Kppp will always work on the first time.
Everytime.

I didn't need to edit any configuration files of any kind or
anything like that. Merely entering the correct data in dialog boxes
automatically configures all the required config files. It's totally
transparent to the user. I went into some of the config files later and
examined them, and Kppp did all the work for me.

Hope it helps you out. Write back and let me know how it went.

Ciao!

Hello,

I have a ethernet card(10/100) that has the 21143 (tulip) chipset.
The default media type is autosense but it does not detect correctly.
It sets the rate to 100 and it really is 10. Is there a way to set the
media to 10 instead of autosense? All suggests are welcome.

Thanks,

Nilang

Hi,
When my eth0 is being configured, the wrong IRQ address is looked at. I
physically set it in /etc/conf.modules
with the correct IRQ address, but the script is not reading that i.e.
`modprobe' still looks at the wrong original
values even though conf.modules has been changed. `modprobe -c' shows
the correct value. What is over-riding
the correct values, and what other conf files should be edited to
correct this problem? I am using kernel
2.2.9-19mdk (Mandrake linux). I am setting it in conf.modules as
"options eth0 irq=3"

Appreciate any suggestions towards this.
Thanks in advance

Well, in NetBIOS, a browse list can take up to 50some minutes...This is a
protocol-specific thing that doesn't have to do with samba (although
samba's implementation may differ slightly from Microsoft's causing an
extended synch time). If another computer tries to log on using the same
name and the original won't respond, the new computer will get to use that
name...

I've seen similar problems, but not as drastic. I get full speed ftp
transfers both putting from windows and getting from linux, but when
I get from windows or put from linux the speed is about half. By full
speed I mean 0.8-1.0 Mbyte/s (10Mbit 10base2).

I've always attributed it to something lacking in the windows TCP/IP
implementation, but I've given up trying to fix it. I use Samba for
file transfers so I can't monitor performance most of the time. I
guess it's "fast enough".

If anyone has any ideas on what the key to this problem is, I'd be
interested in hearing it as well. (Although I wouldn't be surprised
if his was different from mine.)

dmesg won't show any eth0 specific stuff unless you have
configured the network (in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0, for Redhat)

See if it recognized the card - look for the driver details ie - via-rhine
or so..
or try lsmod to see if your driver is loaded.

Hey!

I'm a newbie running RH 6.0

Sometimes my fetchmail tells my that there are mails at my ISP, and that
they have been skipped.

What does this mean?

After this message, I check my ISP mailbox and the mails that were there

neither at /var/spool/mail/root or /var/spool/mail/user_name

Is there a friendly soul who might answer this for me!? ;-)

1. chmod 777 and chown root.wheel your incomind directory.
2. edit /etc/ftpacces. Add at least following line:
upload /home/ftp /incoming yes root daemon 600 nodirs

Exactly Jon. and thanks for the "support". :>

I have an LCD output module that is working great. I am working
on an input device. I don't know what to go with... infrared remote

slim case now.

I don't know if this is feasable yet, but I think I may try to use DOS
for the operating system and place it on a bootable CD-ROM with
all the MP3s on it--to avoid using a hard drive which might be
susceptable to the heat. I'll probably have to make a large RAM drive
if any of my programs will need it.

I didn't know if it is even possible to *run* Linux from a read-only
media and just let it use a RAM drive for it's logging, etc. If anybody
knows if Linux can be ran on read-only medium... let me know!

thanks all!

Some of the $98 cards are actually more trouble than $25 cards. For
example, various DEC tulip and tulip clone cards work very well, while
some 3Com's have dreadful problems.

You might want to check out http://lhd.datapower.com for some buying
advice, but searching DejaNews can also be helpful to check how many
people are having trouble with a particular card.

What does it say at boot? Is the card recognized and successfully

simple step.
