Hello,
i wonder if somebody out there can explain how to get diald to open my
connection to my ISP only when i want to browse the Internet or get my mail.
As it is now, it tries to connect every 10 sec, and when connected it stays
on for ever!

Take a look here:

There's a tool, on the above web page, that will help build a script
to run ipchains.

Michael,

Your problem looks fairly straightforward. Hopefully, you're using
LILO to boot your linux machine. If so, add the following line to
the config section you're currently using:
append = "ether=0,0,eth1"

Type it _exactly_ as shown. Once you've done that, the next time
you re-boot, your NE2000 card with io=0x220 will most likely be
eth0, and the other one will be eth1. Make sure the IP addresses
are assigned appropriately during startup. I would take the
'options ne io=0x300,0x220' line out of your modules.conf file.
Also, make sure the default gateway route is being assigned to
the correct eth0/eth1, otherwise you will still not be able to
get to your gateway.

Subject: ping only works sometimes
Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 23:29:16 GMT

I am having an odd problem with a home network I am setting up
between my Linux desktop and Windows 95 notebook. They are both
hooked up to a hub and when I try to ping one machine from another,
I can see the hub flashing, but most packets are lost. Every once in
a while, some packets will get through, but very slowly.

I've tried switching hubs and cables. Now I think it is down to
software. I am just setting the basic network stuff up. On the Linux
machine, I set up the adapter via ifconfig, and create a route for
the network address to go to the device. I do the same on the Windows
side (each machine with a different IP address, of course).

The Windows netstat -s command produces some items under the
title "Router discards" and it is a high number. Anybody know what this
means or what my problem might be?

Thanks,

Here's what you need to do to get it working:

Login as root
Create a link to ttyS0 using: ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem
Make sure kppp is setuid: chmod 4755 /usr/bin/kppp
Make sure pppd is setuid: chmod 4755 /usr/sbin/pppd

That should get it working for you.

Depending on the revision of the card, you may need the the dec tulip
driver or the via-rhine driver.

Most routers have a good ACL capability. I presume you have a cisco
for your egress router (no particular reason). You can apply a really
thorough ACL on a cisco (or ascend, or bay, etc.) that would be as good
if not better than any firewall.

That way there is no need for any additional hardware than what you
are already using. If you have other needs like NAT, routers will
do this as well, but I'd start thinking about a firewall at that point.

Robert,
The Netgear FA310TX uses the DEC 21143 chip...which uses the 'Tulip' series
of ethernet drivers. Just about every Linux distribution has the 'Tulip'
driver...but it is constantly being updated...so you may want to find the
latest.

Netgear includes an enhanced Tulip linux driver on the floppy disk that
comes with the card. ( it's a source file that must be compiled..) If you
don't have the Netgear diskette, then take a look at Don Becker's site:
  http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html
..he originally wrote and maintains the tulip drivers...just get the latest
version...0.90Q or higher.

Cheers...Al

Samba works really well with Windows clients. I have one sitting in another
office that I haven't even looked at for about 3 months.

Just be careful with Windows 98 or NT clients. You either need to set
encryption stuff when you set up Samba OR enable plain text passwords on
the clients.

Also if you have more than one Samba box make sure they are both running
the same version of Samba.

In terms of the lmhosts and hosts. It probably depends on your network. I
don't use the hosts file. I do use lmhosts but the main reason I use it is
so my clients can see other NT domains on different subnets. I found that
in a complex NT network (ie. spanning subnets) running WIndows PDCs you
needed to use lmhosts anyway so if you haven't dealt with this issue before
you probably won't need to worry now.

I use dhcp for the clients to get their IP's. .... ? I'm not sure why you
think this is a problem. The thing about Samba is that the clients don't
know it's not NT and dhcp is just dhcp. ie. You could be running it with an
NT setup so why is it any different with Samba ?

The biggest problem I had was sorting out group privileges which are a
bitch if you are used to an NT domain. ie. NT is a lot more flexible in
privileges it allows. Unix style systems are much more limiting basically
because you only have owner or a single group privilege (apart from world)
so if you want group x to be able to rw on a directory but group y to only
be able to read and world to have no privileges whatsoever then you run
into problems. Samba has mechanisms to overcome this BUT it often means
that if the user logs into your linux box using telnet they may be able to
write to stuff you didn't want them to.

Paul,

    I don't like the output of your "tracert". Are you able to ping
your router from your NT workstations? I believe the tracert should at
least have this:

traceroute to 192.168.0.1, 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
 1  <hostname of router> (192.168.1.1)  1.411 ms  0.602 ms  0.584 ms

before it gets stuck.

i'm new to linux networking, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
my problem is this: i'm trying to set up my linux box so that it can
access the Net. Here's some info.
i'm currently using redhat 6.0, with the 2.2.5 kernel
i'm plugged in to an 8-port hub, which is in turn plugged into a Cisco
675 external adsl modem. the modem is using DHCP to dynamically get our
address from our ISP at USwest, so everything works fine for me in
Win98.

anyway, in Windows, i started up winipcfg and got these info

from the Howto's, i gathered that my ethernet card is an NE2000

i've also read the DHCP howto, which unfortunately only covered RH5.x,
so didn't do much help.
also, i did a 'ifconfig' and 'ifconfig eth0' and got

Subject: Cann't get samba to print from win95 to linux printer!!!!!!

Ok, I have smbd in inetd.conf and the works..
Here is my smb.conf file
; /etc/smb.conf
;
; Make sure and restart the server after making changes to this file,
ex:
; /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb stop
; /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start

[global]
; Uncomment this if you want a guest account
; guest account = nobody
    log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
    lock directory = /var/lock/samba
    share modes = yes
    printing = bsd
    printcap name = /etc/printcap
    load printers = yes
    log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
    lock directory = /var/lock/samba

[homes]
    comment = Home Directories
    browseable = no
    read only = no
    create mode = 0750

[printers]
    comment = All Printers
    security = server
    path = /var/spool/lpd/lp
    browseable = no
    printable = yes
    public = yes
    writable = no
    create mode = 0700

[tmp]
    comment = Temporary file space
    path = /tmp
    read only = no
    public = yes

Right straight from the how-to.
I go to the win95 machine, which I had just rebuilt, and install a
network printer using browse entire network. Bingo, my Linux box with
all of my /etc/printcap entries show up. I select lp, just a straight
through, no filters.
Now, I go to Word and try to print a one page doc..
I get the following error.

There was error writing to \\Penny\lp for printer (HP DeskJet 660C):
(Penny is my linux machine)
There was a problem printing to the printer due to an unknown system
error.
Restart windows, and then try printing again.
This printer will be set to work offline.
To save your print job on the local printer queue, click OK

So, I beboot and try again. Same damn thing.

What is going on????

Thanks a lot to all. It worked immediately. I am running 2.2.11. The readme
file on the
floppy had the dec 21143 listed but I did not know it was the tulip series.
I can
add another card to my pile of 3c595TX's that work.

Thanks to all.

Bob
