I've experienced the same problem with that 3COM card.
Sorry, but ftp-install sometimes just won't work with it, because
the driver-module of the installation kernel is too old for it.

Solution:
Borrow a "standard" card (I know this sounds funny).
Do the install.
Then change the card back.
Update the driver for the 3COM card and compile a new kernel with
the updated driver.
(drivers available @ http://cesdis1.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/)

Good luck!

Subject: Help with networking RH6 with WinNT and Win98

You all have probably heard this before and hopefully this is a really
simple fix, but I can't seem to figure it out.

The final goal of this project is to be able to share one internet
connection with 2 other computers, primarily just for the connection (I
really hate tieing up both phone lines) but finally for games like
Ultima
Online and Everquest.

Here's the situation... 3 computers, first computer running RH6, second
running WinNT 4.0 SP4, and the third running Win98. All are using 3Com
3c905 cards. The Windows network works fine, no problems there.

I have read the Net-3HOWTO and EthernetHOWTO files and done everything
but recompile the kernel.

I currently have the systems configured as:
linux 192.168.1.1
NT 192.168.1.2
W98 192.168.1.5
subnet 255.255.255.0 on all of them

Neither Windows machine can ping linux, the hub is showing that
something
is happening, but no response. Linux can ping itself as well as the
loopback(?) 127.0.0.1 so I guessing that the network card is working.

Got a little response from Linux, pinged the 98 box, but time was
horrible with something like 50% packet loss.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to get this
working off and on for the past month and am about to give up on it.

Ron

I already did. I just omitted the first part (the auth. protocol

RTFM.

Set "FollowSymLinks" in the Apache config file.

I'm a complete newbie with Linux but have got some way in 6 days.

I'm trying to set up a Win95 DUN compatible dial-up scheme for my home
network using the Linux's password file for dial-up authentication.

I have 2 problems which don't want to go away.

1. I can't get PAP to work. If I comment out the "auth" in the
/etc/ppp/options.ttyS1 file, I can connect and ping the server. If I
include "auth" the connection fails. The pwd is correct.

I don't really know which logs to be looking at for help with this.

2. The connection I can make does not reach other IP's in the network.
I've included "proxyarp" in the "options" file. This is to do with IP
forwarding I know. If it's the kernel, how do I tell?

I'm using RedHat 5.1, pppd-2.3.3, mgetty-1.1.14

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

Below is my options.ttyS1 (with the commented-out "auth"

I don't know what "eznet" is, but I'd guess that your ppp connection was
not added as the default route. What is the output of "netstat -r"?

You can use Samba (www.samba.org) to serve files using Microsoft SMB
protocol, and to perform a number of other "NT Server" roles.

For Intranet, Apache (www.apache.org) is the world's leading http server

Both of these are bundled with the better Linux distributions.

Depends what functionality you need, but I expect any IMAP server should
do the trick.

I got a spam today (fake return address [EMAIL PROTECTED]) from

Is this the same idiot?

I complained to [EMAIL PROTECTED] which (inappropriately IMHO) goes to

I don't know much about details of networking in linux, but I think, the only
way wouldbe preventing the kernel to add new routes within its own domain or
preventing it to add
a new route (to another MAC) if one exists for this IP.

Of course, this would need some kernel hacking.

Subject: Weird FTP problem
Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 09:40:49 +0100

I have been having several problems with my RedHat 6.0 (kernel 2.2.5)
based i686 Linux system related to dialling up to the Internet.

I have persuaded my machine to dial into my ISP (www.demon.co.uk) and
most of the time it communicates well (via my internal modem). I can
surf the web without problems (although sometimes the transfer stops,
even though I can still ping the machine I am transferring from). There
are two more serious problems though - they may be related to each
other, or they may not:

Firstly, trying to do an 'ftp put' doesn't work - it gets stuck waiting
for the connection from the other machine (I gather that with an FTP
'put' the server actually connects back to the client machine).

Secondly, sending email via SMTP doesn't work - netscape tells me
"message sent - waiting for reply" and just waits there until the TCP
connection times out. The message is never sent. The strange thing is
that about 5% of the time it does actually succeed in sending messages
(particularly if they are short).

The only potential peculiarity of note is that Demon.co.uk allocates
each user a fixed IP address, although this seems to be configured
during PPP initialisation, and I don't think it is something I need to
worry about.

I would really appreciate any help,

Ian Clarke.

I've experienced some problems with the 3Com Cards as well
(only under linux).
The problem was a too old driver in the kernel.
Try to update the driver and compile a new kernel.
Hopefully, it will work fine then.

Everything sounds right except for the presence of windows 98 machines
:)

Seriously, you've got it right. It doesn't acually matter which device
(eth0 or eth1) you use for your cable modem and which you use for your
internal network, but what you're suggesting will be fine.

It's not. It shows that there are no problems. What exactly is your
problem? I'm guessing that you haven't added a default route and set up
your /etc/hosts, but I can't tell because you havent provided enough
information.

You probably just need to do a few more things to get your network

In access.conf where default options are set for the server, add
FollowSymLinks to the Options section for the default directory.

Mine looks like this:

# First, we configure the "default" to be a very restrictive set of

<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks

The ADSL modem doesn't use DHCP, the computer does. If you look in the
Windoze control panel, you will see the box "Obtain an Address from a
DHCP server" checked.

Try turning on DHCP in Linux, using control-panel or whichever mechanism
you prefer.

To try it as a one-off, log in as root and give the commands:

pump
ifconfig -a

If it's just normal DHCP, that's all she wrote. If it's like RoadRunner
cable service and requires some kind of "login" then you need
appropriate Linux client software for that.

Subject: fpt & http but no telnet?

I have a problem regarding telnet. When i try to telnet from the outside world
into my server I get a time out and that's it no login or access denied! Tough
if I telnet from the inside it works fine!
Here is my setup:

486 firewall with 2 nic's (eth0 and eth1)
DHCPd with a cable modem on eth0 (out.side.ip.number)
eth2 (192.168.0.1) is connected to a hub providing internet to my internal
network

Now when I telnet to the firewall's "out.side.ip.adress" from e.g. 192.168.0.4
no problem! Telnetting on the firewall machine to itself works fine to. Now when
I try to telnet form "some.where.out.there" to my linuxbox I get a time out and
nothing more, though ftp and http work fine from anywhere!! my /etc/host.allow
and /etc/host.deny are empty!

Can somebody explain to me how I can configure my box so that I can telnet into
it from anywhere on the planet?

I tried fixing it for 2 days an gave up on it (shouldn't but no more time)
I hope it is a simple fix :)

Thanks!
